says in great detail, and the guys at TextDrive also point out, the
combination of comment spammers, and the database calls made by

Python's Design Goals: Interview with

Python's Design Goals: Interview with
Guido
01/22/2003 11:44 PMSorry, forgot to link to interview.
Fixed.
What were your original design goals for Python? I had always
imagined you wanted to create an easy-to-learn language. You wanted to
maximize developer productivity by creating an easy-to-read,
easy-to-write language. But from your description of Python's history
(see Part I), it sounds like you were trying to fix things that
frustrated you in ABC, a language that was designed to make it easy
for intelligent non-programmers to learn.
Guido van Rossum: Actually, my initial goal for Python was to serve
as a second language for people who were C or C++ programmers, but who
had work where writing a C program was just not effective.
I have noticed that some super-intelligent people have strange blind
spots. They prefer vi and command-line interfaces to GUI's because
their brains are so fast that visual aids like xterm are mere
distractions. Similarly, Guido wants to develop a 2nd language for
C/C++ programmers, but Python looks totally different from any C/C++
program i've ever seen. He probably assumed people are as smart as he
is, and they would grok something
radically different as easily as drinking water. Well I tried Python
for about a month and gave up - the indentation was giving me
indigestion and i missed my darling curly braces.
Here's another blind spot: why did it never occur to Guido that people
would ever want to port their code from C to Python (if C/C++ guys
were his target audience) - porting to Python from any other language
is a big code rewrite (or messy coding in C as a Python extension). In
contrast, I have ported some of my C code libraries multiple times to
other languages - from C => C++ => JScript => PHP.
To me, Guido just wanted to do something cool when he wrote Python. As
a 2nd language for C/C++ programmers - haha. Stop tickling me :-)
Python is a great language, but PHP, Perl and Javascript are the true
scripting descendants of C/C++.

Spamalot Fans Opened Up To Lots Of Spam
Spamalot Fans Opened Up To Lots Of Spam
03/14/2005 05:27 PMFans of the Broadway musical Spamalot (based on an old Monty Python
movie) might have been surprised to find out that by signing up on the
musical's website to be on the show's email list, they also
open
ed themselves up to receiving some spam. Of course, that's just
the catchy hook to make the story interesting. The real story is that
Spamalot and some other Broadway shows set up their mailing list
software in a way that revealed the names, postal addresses and email
addresses of everyone on the list. However, there's no evidence that
any spammers actually got a hold of the list, or that anyone was
spamming with it -- meaning that the only reason this is worthy of
getting attention is because of the amusing connection with the name
of the musical. Unfortunately, the reality is that this is just yet
another story of an organization having weak security in place to
protect the info of customers.

04/09/2005 06:16 PMMy son and I spent a little time this afternoon on the Monty Hall
paradox, a topic we'd discussed a couple of years ago. Unfortunately,
it takes me 20 minutes to understand the explanation, and I only
understand it for 4 continuous seconds. Here's the situation. You are
asked to pick one of three doors. Donkeys are behind two of them, and
a new car is behind another. After you choose your door, but before
it's revealed to you, Monty Hall (the emcee) opens one of the doors
you didn't choose and reveals a donkey. He then asks if you'd...

06/24/2004 04:47 PMA new Probe Droid has just been launched; this week we're looking for
fans to weigh in on the possibility of a smaller, more affordable line
from Code 3 Collectibles. As other top rated collectible manufactures
look to miniature versions of their line (Master Replica's .45 series
and Gentle Giant's Bust Ups), should Code 3 explore the option? Going
back to the vintage days, the Star Wars line has had a long history
with Die-cast Metal, with nothing offered in that format since
galoob's Episode I line, should Code 3 fill that void? Look for the
new Probe Droid ballot now and cast your vote today!
