Background I was a reasonably happy Sprint PCS customer for the last 2.5 years or so. But ever since I moved into my new place, I've become more of a disgruntled customer. The wireless signal in my house sucks. I get one "bar" of signal strength and calls typically drop, if they work at all. And the coverage at work seems to have gone downhill too. Even on the 4th floor where my current office is, I get lots of...

Cellular Security Cameras: Mobile Phone
Tech As A Platform

Cellular Security Cameras: Mobile Phone
Tech As A Platform
09/23/2004 11:18 AM
While it may seem a bit strange to some to find out that Nokia is launching a security camera product, it does signal the realization that the technology used on cellular networks isn't just about mobile phones -- but can be seen as a platform for other devices and applications. While we have no idea if the cellular camera idea makes sense or will be even remotely successful for Nokia (seems unlikely), it's basically using the same technology found in many camera phones. It has a camera, a GSM radio and MMS capabilities. It detects motion and sends an MMS video to either a mobile phone or email. This is just finding a new, non-phone application for technologies that already exist. It's about viewing the technologies as a platform, and then looking for applications to build on top of it.

David Pescovitz: According to a new global survey, fourteen percent of cell phone users stop screwing to answer their cell phones. Just like Paris Hilton. From Consumer Affairs.com report on a subscription-only Ad Age article:
The highest incidence of cellular interruptus was found in Germany and Spain, where 22 percent of users interrupted sex to answer their cell phones; the lowest was in Italy, where only 7 percent reported doing so. In the U.S., the figure was 15 percent, the magazine said, citing a study conducted by BBDO Worldwide and Proximity Worldwide.
