Misconceptions About Online Ad
Misconceptions
09/08/2004 12:32 PM
Adam Penenberg has been doing a great job with his column for Wired, discussing ways that online media is changing. However, his latest piece is a bit weak. He takes a look at some "misconceptions" about online advertising and tries to set the record straight. The main gist of the story is that annoying advertising works. Of course, in order to support that statement, you have to explain what you mean by "works," and the article doesn't do a very good job, other than to bring up something of a self-fulfilling definition: if it didn't work, advertisers wouldn't use them. However, taking a longer term view of annoying advertising suggests its only meant to be successful in the short term before people learn how to avoid it. Also, most of the "misconceptions" aren't misconceptions at all. Plenty of studies have shown that there is a small percentage of people out there who buy from spam, so that's not much of a misconception. As for popups, which get the "they must work because they're there" treatment in the article, studies have shown that most clicks are accidental as the pop up gets in the way of a mouse click or it happened as someone was closing the browser. Studies have also shown that, long term, popups are bad for business because they give people a negative impression of the companies who use them. The last two "misconceptions" Penenberg lists aren't really misconceptions at all. The first deals with Claria, concerning whether or not it's okay to show competing ads next to a website if the user chooses to see them. Beyond noting that his support on this point is just from Claria itself, this is, as we've pointed out before a simple trademark issue. The final misconception is that internet advertising doesn't work. Anyone looking at any report on the online advertising market in the last twelve months clearly knows that hasn't been true in quite some time. Besides, part of what made internet advertising valuable again was exactly the opposite of Penenberg's premise. It wasn't the annoying or intrusive ads, but that toned down, contextual or highly targeted ads became more popular.

Atom misconceptions

Atom misconceptions 03/22/2005 05:09 PM

Dare Obasanjo posted some criticism of the Atom Format and Protocol today, based on Ben Hammersley's ta lk at E-Tech. I'm not at the conference; I picked up on them from James Robertson, who also shares a rather cynical view of Atom. Dare's a smart guy and I really wish he was participating in the Atom Format and Protocol discussions, but he dropped out and seems to have lost touch with Atom. Even a dumb guy like me can see that. So, I'll try to correct some of his (and James') misconceptions about Atom.

Dare Obasanjo: During the break, Marc Canter and I talked about the fact that both the Atom syndication format and Atom publishing protocol are simply not rich enough to support existing blogging tools let alone future advances in blogging technologies. For example, in MSN Spaces we already have data types such as music lists and photo albums which don't fit in the traditional blog entry syndication paradigm that Atom is based upon. More importantly it is unclear how one would even extend to do this in an acceptable way.

I'm not sure I understand what the specific problem is here, but if there is a problem then that problem is shared by all of the nine ten incompatible forms of RSS as well. They all use essentially the same model and offer the same mechanisms for extensibility (allowing the addition of new elements at feed or entry level). Atom is not supposed to be a new invention, it is a rigorously specified standardization of existing technologies -- carefully designed to ensure inter-op.

Dare Obasanjo: Similar issues exist with the API. The API already has less functionality existing APIs such as the MetaWeblog API. It is unclear how one would perform the basic act of querying one's blog for a list of categories to populate the drop down list used by a rich client which is a commonly used feature by such tools.

Atom's support for categories is unclear, of course, because that section of the specification has not been written yet. When Atom Protocol is complete, it will offer more, not less, functionality than the MetaWeblog API. Contrast that with the MetaWeblog API, where the spec is "complete" yet categories are stil l unclear.

James Robertson: Sounds like events moved past the Atom API while it was being put together. Podcasting walked right past it. Their idea seems to be that you should just slap Base64 encoded content into the feed - uh huh - I sure want to download a 10MB screencast (more like 15 after being encoded, but never mind) each time I look at the feed. Looks like the Atom API is worth ignoring as something to actually use...

No, that is not the Atom Protocol solution for Podcasting. To reference a Podcast from an Atom entry, you'd use the Atom Link element.

Come on back guys. Read the latest drafts and get back into the process. We need you and we all need Atom.

Three New Plasma TVs from JVC

Three New Plasma TVs from JVC 08/19/2004 03:13 PM

jvc_new_plasmas.jpg image

NEC JVC has three new high-definition plasma televisions coming out - two 42-inch models and a 50-inch. One of the 42-inchers, the GD-V422PCE, produces over a billion colors, which should make for a very nice, rich looking picture. They all are nice, of course, as far as plasma goes, plus each is capable of displaying a regular XGA source (1,024 by 760 pixels) if you wanted to use them as a giant monitor. Prices aren't announced yet, but I'd expect something in the $6,000 - 7,000 range for the 42-inch models, and way more than that for the 50.

You don't like what we're doing in Iraq? Fine, it's your right as an American citizen to share your feelings with the public. But how is keeping me from my morning coffee going to change anything?! Plasma Burn-in Oops 01/06/2005 05:16 PM

WHO image rattles plasma TV owner: Not what you want out of an expensive TV.

[Bryant] Ayala of Bondurant [Iowa] said he noticed Monday night that the blue frame used by WHO-TV to warn viewers about winter weather closings appeared to have been burned into his recently purchased plasma screen.

A Web site called PlasmaTVBuyingGuide.com said that images can be burned into plasma TV screens, particularly when the image is displayed for more than a few minutes at a time. The problem is more common during the first 200 hours of use, according to the site.

Remember that this is why screensavers moved around originally — because of the mythical "burn in." Supposedly this problem was resolved for CRTs a long time ago, but I guess plasmas are still in their infancy.

Panasonic's New Plasma, LCD VIERA Lineup 04/06/2005 03:21 PM

panasonic_viera.gif imagePanasonic has introduced three new plasma and six new LCD TVs in Japan, all of which are in the VIERA line. Scheduled to be released on May 1st, the plasmas will be available in 50, 42 and 37 inch sizes, and the LCDs in 32, 26, 23 and 19 inch sizes. The most expensive set is 650,000 yen, and the cheapest 160,000 yen — I'll let you guess which models those correspond to. A point of interest for the plasma panels is the new "PEAKS" driver, resulting in a pretty nice 3,000:1 contrast ratio. There wasn't any mention of PEAKS being used on the LCDs. Also, the commercial image character for the new VIERAs will be Koyuki (of "Last Samurai" fame).

panasonic_ty_tp65p6_s_01_1_.jpgInfoSync World cleans up their CeBIT coverage with a piece on Panasonic's 65" Plasma HDTV with an infrared frame that turns it into an enormous touch screen. Referencing Minority Report far too many times, the reviewer tells us that Panasonic had developed some very specific weather tracking and aerial navigation software to take advantage of the touch capabilities. The great part is that the infrared unit is an independent frame around the television and Panasonic also makes a 42" and 50" model, so retrofitting your existing Plasma shouldn't be too difficult. It's USB-powered and accurate up to 2x2 millimeters. No word on price or availability, but a quick Google search pulled up a German Lycos catalog page with a price of about $5,150 for the 50" model.
