Trackback Attack Spammer Victim Has Had
Enough
07/08/2004 02:10 AM

A one man crusade against the infamous Trackback Spammer! In all seriousness, I understand how frustrating this can be. It is not only a waste of the spammer’s time, but it is also not really enticing people to “rush over” to the site that is so rudely promoted. I wish the the writer at Geek News Central luck on his hunt and hope it turns up something helpful.

Attention Mr Trackback Spammer

Attention Mr Trackback Spammer 07/06/2004 03:01 AM

I have been collecting a lot of information from your probes and attacks against my domain but you may have cooked your own goose. You messed with a guy that has some extra time on his hands and I will be tracking your every move. Don't worry you may be trying to hide but I am not alone in watching you. When I do find out who you are I am going to take your ass to court and make you pay. You have pissed of the entire blogging community and your antics this weekend have not gone unnoticed but let it be known this is the digital frontier and we have toolz to.

I know your reading this Blog as I found your latest non porn submission very entertaining it was like you where pushing me to dig deeper and like you wanted to be found out. But your number 1 mistake was trying to promote some porn sites. Are you the owner or on contract by the owner of those sites to up your page ranking, time will tell but it has been a fun weekend. To bad you wasted so much bandwidth but it was entertaining watching your posting attempts. All of your entries are deleted and nothing has been gained but a lot is about to be lost.

Spammer, Anti-Spammer Involved In
Lawsuit Will Hold Public Debate

Spammer, Anti-Spammer Involved In
Lawsuit Will Hold Public Debate
05/20/2004 11:41 PM
Julian Haight, the founder of anti-spam service SpamCop, and Scott Richter, the founder of spamming service OptInRealBig, are currently in the middle of a fairly nasty legal battle over whether or not SpamCop can block OptIn's spam. Still, the two have agreed to appear together in public and debate the topic. Both of their lawyers say that the debate will avoid the issue of the lawsuit, but as the article points out, that seems unlikely. The thing is, in listening to what both sides have said over the years, you already know what they're going to say in this debate - and they're talking at cross purposes. The spammers focus on their right to make money, while everyone else talks about their right to be left alone. The problem with the spammers' position is that they don't have the right to make money. They have the right to try to make money, but if it involves pissing everyone off, and everyone decides to create and use filters to make email bearable again - then that's their right too.

We got hit by Trackback Spam

We got hit by Trackback Spam 07/02/2004 07:42 PM

Well as soon as you lock one door they came in the back. This morning I woke up to over 100 spam trackbacks that where very nasty. Some of you may have seen them in our trackback tracker on the main page. I really love to give credit to those sites that quote us but I cannot risk having them on the main page. They are getting smarter as they are spoofing IP's so it's not like I can put in a IP block. So those of you using Movable Type Version 3 the backdoor is wide open.

Trackback authentication

Trackback authentication 03/06/2004 02:09 AM

Jacques Distler: The anonymous nature of the internet makes the problem of “identity” a hard one. In physics, when we encounter an intractably-hard problem, our most frequent dodge is to redefine the problem to one which admits a solution, and hope that the result is a “good-enough” stand-in for the original problem. In that spirit, I (re)defined the problem as reliably associating comments posted with the websites of the commenters.

Just a suggestion: a lesser, but very much related and much more tractable, problem is trackbacks.  The reason why it is more tractable is that the trackbacks are issued by software which could reasonably be expected to have direct access to your weblog's private keys.  This could make signing totally automatic - simply check a box once, and your template could be updated and all future trackbacks would be automatically signed.

The signatures could be passed as a new CGI parameter or as a HTTP header.  Neither would likely affect any existing software that wasn't expecting this information.

Once trackback signing is widely enough adopted, people may feel comfortable turning off the ability to accept unsigned trackbacks.  And then much of the infrastructure will be in place to tackle the harder, and more important problem, of comment signing.

The key nut to crack there is to make it easy and painless to sign a comment.

Trackback in, valid out (mostly)

Trackback in, valid out (mostly) 06/28/2004 09:41 PM
Jacques Distler: You gonna turn off Trackbacks (which don't declare a charset, and could be sent in any charset imaginable, but very frequently are Windows-1252)? Unless you have a way to guess the charset and re-encode the result to UTF-8, they will invalidate your pages as quick as you can sneeze. It turns out that by design it is rather hard for a string of bytes to accidentally be valid utf-8, unless that string is pure US-ASCII, in which case it doesn't much matter which encoding you presume. ...

Office Pranks - Bronze Medal Finalists

Office Pranks - Bronze Medal Finalists 06/17/2005 06:13 PM

dcp00861-med.jpgWell, I received quite a few pranks these past few days. Some good ones, some bad ones—mice in the blender? Come on Emeril!—and here's the best of the worst. The Bronze Medalists dealt almost exclusively with computerized mayhem, which is kind of a cop-out. But you're all special in your own ways.

  • The most basic prank came to us from just about everyone. It's good and important, don't get me wrong, but it's been played. Essentially, you take a screenshot of someone's desktop and make that the wallpaper. Hee hee.
  • Brendan Colby writes:
We took a co-worker's monitor power cable and ran it through the wall into a separate power strip/surge protector so we could turn his monitor on/off at our leisure.

  • Rubin sent us an entire list of possible pranks including, but not limited to:
  • Taping up the microphone of someone's phone, causing them to speak louder.
  • Put a piece of clear tape on the glass of the photocopier. This is fun, but it has a second part to it. If the sheer frustration of someone having to make 100 copies all over again isn't enough, you could try making 100 copies of the piece of tape, and then load the paper into the paper feed. Funny to see people go crazy trying to figure out why the copy is coming up with this square on every page.
  • Post a For Sale on the lunchroom posterboard with your co-workers extension, offering to sell "One size adult XL outfit of baby clothing, including pacifier, bottle, bib and diaper."

  • James suggested using BoinkMail which allows you to send embarrassing things to your coworkers. Or just send embarrassing things to your co-workers.

And the winner of the Bronze Medal is the big, pink office created by Dan. The performance and planning were quite ambitious, though the ultimate delivery could have been improved by a hit of Hello Kitty.

Stay tuned for the Silver and Gold medalists later today.

Office Pranks - The Silver Medal
    Finalists

Office Pranks - The Silver Medal
    Finalists
    06/17/2005 06:11 PM

unknown.jpgSome of the mid-level attacks include:

  • GADC's demonic Mac Scripting: "Make a Shutdown script and save it as an applet with a name that in no way implies its true nature. Then set it up to run on startup or on login. Now whenever the victim starts up or logs into the computer, it'll shut down. This one is killer for obvious reasons."
  • Tim's Birthday Chair:
Disassemble a musical birthday card and carefully tape it underneath a coworkers chair so that when the chair is leaned back, the card activates. It took more than four hours for one coworker to discover the source of the intermittent noise!

  • And Brendan's Word hack:
Subtle in execution, but so hot when it yields results. Change the AutoCorrect on a coworker's Word settings such that when he types in, say "facilitate," it gets auto-corrected to "faliatiate". Don't have the patience to wait for him to type facilitate? Change "the" to "teet", and so on.

And the Silver Medal goes to Anthony and his ’84 Westfalia van cubicle mod. The van cost $400, but the joy it gives is priceless.
