users unlimited storage. By removing limits on space, users now have a
simple, low-cost service which will keep their emails safe, secure and
backed up forever. AlienCamel has implemented the most sophisticated

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PMThe big discussion that I've been having with a few different people
over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the
email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious
extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone
agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that
Google is developing an
email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an
entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version
of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating
contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've
spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought
Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic -
which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out -
and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google
contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability
to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the
ability to better search through their own email. I could see a
certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their
email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the
email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well,
it could be a real hit.

If you're looking for a speaker
02/10/2004 02:47 AMAges ago, I created a page listing all the speaking engagements
I've done, putting descriptions of each event and links to any
presentations I'd prepared. And then I thought I linked to it
somewhere on the site. But I guess I didn't, except for a very minor
link at the bottom of my resume. Now I've added a "speaking" section
to the top of my navigation which sends you to my speaking resume. I'm not sure
'resume' is the right word for this, but I don't know what else to
call it. Anyway, if you're looking for a speaker, take a look at it to
see if I'm your gal!

06/22/2005 01:51 AMFor years, SMTP server software was used to send and receive e-mail

Information standards? Access issues (both accessibility and

number of interesting products, and the first two we'll be covering

a spiffy looking USB speaker/tower thingy with — get ready

The "USB Speaker Cube W" is a cube-shaped USB speaker (not
subwoofer) with an integrated 4-port USB hub. On the front of the unit
are various dials and buttons for controlling volume, bass and
treble.
Tec's USB Speaker Tower W will run 4,500 yen, and Speaker Cube

House speaker: Soros is a druglord
House speaker: Soros is a druglord
08/31/2004 10:09 AM
Cory Doctorow:
The Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert has gone on record as
suspecting that billionaire currency speculator George Soros (who made
his money on currency speculation) is a drug kingpin. Soros funds a
lot of progressive causes (including a lot of drug-law and
copyright-reform stuff) and has pledged his financial support to
overturn the Bush presidency, so this smear is clearly political in
nature:
"You know, I don't know where George Soros gets his money. I don't
know where -- if it comes overseas or from drug groups or where it
comes from," Hastert mused. An astonished Chris Wallace asked: "Excuse
me?" The Speaker went on: "Well, that's what he's been for a number
years -- George Soros has been for legalizing drugs in this country.
So, I mean, he's got a lot of ancillary interests out there." Wallace:
"You think he may be getting money from the drug cartel?" Hastert:
"I'm saying I don't know where groups - could be people who support
this type of thing. I'm saying we don't know."

01/22/2004 03:03 AMI'm in a meeting with the WEF Media Leaders. Its a few dozen people
consisting of the editors-in-chief and CEOs of a variety of major
media organizations from around the world.
I'm going to talk about the role of blogs and how we might work
together. I'm going to talk about how blogs can address the issue of
getting people to care about about things by providing a voice to
people who don't have a voice and can provide additional resources,
which seems to be one of the issues that many of these media companies
have.
I will also try to talk to the big media companies about designing
their online presence to be more blogger friendly.
I'll try to post notes here. The rules for this meeting are "off

permission to quote is granted by each speaker concerned."
I've also gotten the opportunity to hear some of the concerns that
are facing these media leaders today and will summarize my notes
later.

08/13/2004 05:05 AMH-Net's Discussion Networkhttp://www.h-net.org/lists/H-Net's Discussion Network over 100 email lists spanning
various fields of study. H-Net's e-mail lists function as electronic
networks, linking professors, teachers and students in an egalitarian
exchange of ideas and materials. Every aspect of academic
life--research, teaching, controversies new and old--is open for
discussion; decorum is maintained by H-Net's dedicated editors.
Subscribers and editors communicate through electronic mail messages
sent to the group. These messages can be saved, discarded, downloaded
to a local computer, copied, printed out, or relayed to someone else.
Otherwise, the lists are all public, and can be quoted and cited with
proper attribution. The lists are connected to their own sites on the
World Wide Web, that store discussion threads, important documents,
and links to related sites on the web.
H-Net lists reach
over 100,000 subscribers in more than 90 countries. Subscriptions are
screened by the list's editors to promote a diverse readership
dedicated to friendly, productive, scholarly communications. Each list
publishes between 15 and 60 messages a week. Subscription applications
are solicited from scholars, teachers, professors, researchers,
graduate students, journalists, librarians and archivists. Each
network has its own "personality," is edited by a team of scholars,
and has a board of editors; most are cosponsored by a professional
society. The editors control the flow of messages, commission reviews,
and reject flames and items unsuitable for a scholarly discussion
group. The goals of H-Net lists are to enable scholars to easily
communicate current research and teaching interests; to discuss new
approaches, methods and tools of analysis; to share information on
electronic databases; and to test new ideas and share comments on the
literature in their fields. This will be added to

Slashdot Discussion on Yahoo
standardizing on PHP
10/30/2002 02:52 AMA typical Slashdot debate. Better for laughs than for facts :-)
But there are valid criticisms, many aimed at the class library, PEAR.
The sad fact is that i used to use chunks of PEAR in my code, but
eventually replaced these bits with my own code as I found PEAR too
limiting. Too much of PEAR is written by journeyman programmers. Like
many other people more famous than me (like Manuel Lemos :-), I am
unable to contribute to PEAR because I would have to follow the PEAR
coding standards.
Others have criticized PHP for not having the power of Java/C/C++/C#.
I agree that that PHP is not suitable for every job - my company is
planning to migrate to .NET for our future Windows software. But PHP
is very suitable for web pages, or calling business logic components
written in another language. Also from personal experience I find PHP
very useful in many other domains, particularly as a replacement for
shell-scripts.
From the Yahoo
benchmarks it appears that PHP is slower than mod_perl. However
despite Perl's superior speed and wide use internally with Yahoo, Perl
was rejected. When you have 612 software engineers and 3 million lines
of Perl code, Perl became a liability for Yahoo. My guess is that
Perl's There’s More Than One Way To Do It mentality has proved
to be an excuse for poor and divergent coding practices.
