Strangers in a strangeland

Strangers in a strangeland 12/14/2003 06:26 PM

I just ran across the Bullmoose Republican site, complete with multiple blogs. The strange thing about them is reading their four pillars, they don't sound like republicans at all. They don't sound like democrats either, though their stance makes them sound centrist to me. I suspect a party like this could gain a lot of support, but I doubt next November's choices have much in common with these folks.

Tracking

Intel Research looks at tracking people you see all the time, but don't know, via Bluetooth: Mark Frauenfelder writes about Intel's Jabberwocky, which explores your relationship with other people, including what are called familiar strangers: people who you don't know, but recognize because you see them regularly. The first instantiation is a Bluetooth application that tracks the Bluetooth IDs it sees. The more frequently you see certain IDs, the more familiar the program marks them. When you're surrounded by actual strangers (or their strange Bluetooth devices), you'll see a different display than when you're near people you see often but don't know. Once and if everyone is carrying Bluetooth devices, perhaps you could use this tool as a way to avoid detection. Private detectives will have to learn to turn off Bluetooth features to avoid showing up as known parties. Trying to avoid colleagues at work? As the colored squares grow in intensity, you zip out a fire door....

Don't talk to strangers, remember what
happened to Sarah Cherry....
08/06/2004 01:33 PM
On July 6th, 1988 Dennis Dechaine of Bowdinham, Maine came home from work (transporting frozen chickens from a slaughterhouse) and planned to work on constructing a greenhouse. However, that project hit a glitch and sometime that afternoon he decided instead to take some amphetamines and go exploring in the woods near his home. When he emerged from the woods, lost and looking for his truck, about 8:30 pm that night he was questioned by the police who were looking for a missing 12 year old girl named Sarah Cherry. Two days later, Sarah's body was found and Dennis Dechainewas charged with the girl's murder. He was convicted in March of 1989 to life in prison without parole and an entire generation of Maine girls were told to 'remember Sarah Cherry' as a caution to not talk to strangers.
The question before us now, is, of course, did he do it?

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PM
Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin, both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own, but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"), and considering just how lucrative that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you have virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has announced plans to sell pre-paid mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though, all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up again - back at the store, of course.

Travel Sentry: Save Money on Locks By
Letting Strangers Open Them

Travel Sentry: Save Money on Locks By
Letting Strangers Open Them
06/24/2004 11:13 AM

ts_generic_lock.jpg imageA new organization of luggage manufacturers called "Travel Sentry" has developed a set of combination locks that can be opened by not only their owner, but by agents of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Currently, TSA agents use bolt-cutters to remove any lock when searching through bags without the owner around, but by using a special code on the back of the lock or on a plate on the bag, agents can open the lock without having to destroy it. While the system may not be totally secure -- I'm sure at some point someone will figure out how to crack the key system -- locks on airline luggage are just simple deterrents anyway. If using a Travel Sentry lock will stop the TSA agents from snapping your padlock off every time they do a random check, so much the better. Travel Sentry will even replace a compliant lock if broken by the TSA.

AP - Barry Bonds didn't have to worry about another "not-in-my-ballpark" manager ordering his team to pitch around the San Francisco slugger. Ned Yost of the Milwaukee Brewers swore he wouldn't hold another walk-fest for Bonds, who entered a three-game series at Miller Park on Tuesday night one home run shy of joining Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron in the 700-homer club.
