David Akin has started something that ought to become standard issue for all blogs: An upfront disclosure statement of who pays for the blog and where the conflicts of interest might be. (This should make Zephyr Teachout of the Dean campaign happy; I spent some time with her at the Demo Convention and she wanted to see something just like this happen.) So, now we can argue for the next 9 months about exactly what ought to go into one of these statements, and who's more dislosive than whom, but let's at least get started. Here's a first draft of...

Best Buy's highly skilled staff of cashier-working counterfeit detectors, "a little nervous in the post-9/11 world", has the Baltimore police department put customer Mike Bolesta in handcuffs and leg irons after he uses uncommon but legal US currency to pay his bill.

"Meanwhile, everybody's looking at me. I've lived here 18 years. I'm hoping my kids don't walk in and see this. And I'm saying, 'I can't believe you're doing this. I'm paying with legal American money.'" Bolesta was then taken to the county police lockup in Cockeysville, where he sat handcuffed to a pole and in leg irons while the Secret Service was called in.

Wilco pays for spycasts

Wilco pays for spycasts 06/23/2004 05:38 PM

Wired has a bizarre story of music and sampling royalties involving found sound recordings by one person sold as CDs which the band Wilco sampled from. What is unusual about the case is the company claiming copyright on the sounds, Irdial Discs, didn't perform or write the shortwave broadcasts of what is reportedly hours of spy messages. Irdial simply recorded (and obtained recordings from others) four discs full of it and released it as a compilation. While they embrace free downloading and sharing of the tracks, they do prohibit commercial use, which Wilco looped on a successful 2002 album. As the article states, many legal experts are unsure if Irdial had the rights to demand royalties and point out that future musicians may be wary of using found sounds such as these.
