House Passes Bill Saying No To Stock
Option Expensing
07/20/2004 06:09 PM
As expected, the House today passed the bill saying FASB can't force companies to expense options, instead saying they should follow the plan suggest ed two years ago by Craig Barrett, that only top execs have their options expensed. The bill still has to make it through the Senate (and the President, of course), which may be difficult. This still seems like a lot of talk over nothing. It doesn't involve any cash movement, just the shifting around of numbers on a piece of paper -- and the most important part of those numbers is already known. Anyone who really needs to know this information already knows it. The only thing this might change is the perception of some people who haven't been paying attention concerning the profitability of a company.

$2 Bills

bestbuy.jpgA Baltimore man tried to pay for a Best Buy car stereo installation with $2 bills—and was arrested. Apparently the man was already upset with the Best Buy's service, so thought he'd stage a minor protest by using the uncommon currency:

"I'm just here to pay the bill," Bolesta says he told a cashier. "She looked at the $2 bills and told me, 'I don't have to take these if I don't want to.' I said, 'If you don't, I'm leaving. I've tried to pay my bill twice. You don't want these bills, you can sue me.' So she took the money. Like she's doing me a favor."

He remembers the cashier marking each bill with a pen. Then other store personnel began to gather, a few of them asking, "Are these real?"

(Thanks, C0bra!)

Dollar bills used as advertising

Dollar bills used as advertising 01/24/2004 11:31 AM
More proof that the dollar is being devalued: it's lost its sanctity to marketing execs. A new TV show about dope-dealers is being promoted through stickers on dollar bills that will be given away in bars:
The network is distributing 50,000 one-dollar bills in trendy bars in Los Angeles and New York. Affixed on each of those bills: a removable sticker bearing the USA Network logo, along with the title and airtime of the three-part miniseries.

Based on the movie of the same title, the show is about drug dealers, users, and the position of cash at the center of drug culture lifestyles.

Senate Looking At Intellectual Property
Bills
04/30/2004 01:32 PM
The Senate Judiciary committee has given the okay on four proposed intellectual property bills, meaning they can now go to the Senate floor to be voted on. Among those are a version of the bill that would let the FBI file civil suits against file sharers. That's right, basically the FBI would be signed up to handle the private complaints of the entertainment industry. One of the other bills looks to be a copy of a Californ ia bill that bans video cameras inside movie theaters - meaning you could potentially get arrested and thrown in jail for using the video camera on your mobile phone just while standing in a movie theater.
