Change Text on XP Start Button

Change Text on XP Start Button 05/31/2004 08:29 PM
Via WinXPcentral : “I’ve read a number of articles on the internet about changing the text on the Start button in XP. On more than one occasion I’ve seen references to a five (5) letter limitation when the button is renamed. I always wondered if this was true or just an assumption someone made because the default ‘start’ just happened to fit the button size. So, I decided to run a test and see if there really was a five character limit.”

LazyWeb Request: Change Tracking a la
Word for Any Text
12/11/2003 04:57 PM
Probably the single best feature (yes, there is a good feature) in Word is change-tracking, the ability to see what's been added, deleted, and altered since I last saw the document or since the document began. I can choose to hide the changes or have them exposed in all their g[l]ory detail.

I'd love an app (preferably for my Mac) that'll do the same for any arbitrary text file. And, before you say it, don't say "diff." This is at best a blunt instrument, doesn't know who made what change where, and is on a line-by-line basis which isn't quite enough granularity for any real prose editing. Yes, I can use RCS or CVS, but again we're talking line-level granularity, no? If I'm simply overlooking something, please do correct me.

If not, then I appeal too the LazyWeb to point me in the right direction.

Temp Signage

Temp Signage 12/29/2004 03:24 AM

The Seattle Public Library's Central location is amazing, and although you could probably get twice the usable space if the building was conventional, I found it to be a really cool place. There are public spaces and private study spaces, the whole thing can be walked from top to bottom even though it doesn't appear to be a "spiral" that would allow that.

Soon after we arrived, Megan mentioned that there were dozens of hastily printed and taped signs added since it opened, due to people asking library workers the same questions repeatedly and many people accidentally tripping emergency exit alarms. So I took a bunch of photos of them. This photo illustrates the problem: even though this looks like a normal elevator, it is only for staff and you need to go elsewhere for the public one, and eventually they added signs to make that clear. It's not quite a This is Broken problem, but it's close.

I'm always fascinated by the balance that must be struck in a public space between function and form. The library is beautiful to look inside and out, but sometimes difficult to figure out where exactly you would do certain tasks. You can tell the designers went for subtle when obvious was needed, especially in an institutional setting. On the first floor, just inside the entrance, many people want to know where the bathroom is. Half the people I went with wanted to know as soon as we stepped in. And after walking and riding a few escalators, I was surprised to find out we were in fact at the top of the library. Scott was telling me on his first trip there he accidentally ended up in a conference room on the second "red floor." Even with the signs, I couldn't really tell what the red floor's purpose was.

So overall, the library was a great space filled with interesting things to look at and useful spaces, but far too subtle for an obvious funtional space like a public library.

A string is a bunch of characters of the ASCII table (including extended ASCII, that is, all the 256 characters). text is the same. styled text is a string containing information about the standard styles: on styles (that is plain, bold, italic, underline, outline, shadow, condensed, expanded), font id, size, color, etc. Unicode text is supossed to contain any character in the known languages (latin, japanese, etc.). The information is kept in two bytes. If you are thinking in a multi-language solution in your script, you may use this kind of text as your standard.

SMS Speed Record Sets Guinness World Record

"A 23-year-old Singaporean woman appears to have set a world record for sending text messages over a cellphone, underlining Asia's growing obsession with cellplhone technology.

Kimberly Yeo thumbed 26 words in 43.24 seconds into her phone, beating a world record of 67 seconds for the same words set by a Briton in September 2003, said Singapore's dominant telephone carrier, Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), on Monday.

Cellphones are an ubiquitous accessory in technology-savvy Singapore where more than four out of five people own a handset, giving the wealthy city-state one of the world's highest cellphone penetration rates.

At a contest in front of a department store on Sunday, Yeo was among 125 people timed by SingTel and a panel of independent officials to see how fast they could type the following 160-character message: 'The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.'...

Yeo, who won a S$17 500 (about R64 000) in cash for her nimble thumbs, said she sends out about an average of 1 500 text messages a month to friends and family." [iol, via textuall y.org]

More on Google Size Limit 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Previously we reported on speculation that Google may be hitting a size limit: standard C coding uses 32-bits of storage for numbers, which means that Google might be running out of numbers to identify new documents with. Adding further credence to this theory is the fact that Google has finally added more pages to their results, but only by using a separate supplemental index. I can't think of any good reasons to do this except to get around the size restriction....
