Is it live or is it... Edison? 07/20/2004 01:20 AM
"Close your eyes. See if you can distinguish the voice of the New Edison from that of the artist. Did you ever believe it was possible to recreate the human voice?" As featured on the July 16 episode of NPR's Next Big Thing, Thomas Edison's promotional t one tests have been recreated by composer Nicholas Brooke for the stage, which New York MeFites can see at the Lincoln Center Festival later this week. (More wonderful phonographic ephemera here, by the way.)

Afghanistan's Guerrilla War

Afghanistan's Guerrilla War 09/11/2004 07:10 AM
AT.   Back to Afghanistan.  Islamic guerrillas are gearing up an insurgency to put the US into a two front war.  By the end of Bush's next administration, we should be up to ears in two hot guerrilla wars.  Remember, this is fourth generation warfare.  It turns strength into weakness.

Our amazing military, when bogged down in hot guerrilla wars transforms itself into an extremely expensive, legitimacy depleting liability.  For example, we have set up a situation where we can't lose either Afghanistan or Iraq.  Two hot guerrilla wars would put all of the military assets we have into those theaters.  The additional cost would run well in excess of $400 b a year.  Casualties and confusion would rise as attention is divided between the theaters.  This situation would then make it possible to strike at other areas (Saudi Arabia inparticular) with impunity.  Events would be staged to bait the US into expanding new areas of operations.  The key here is to inflate the bubble of US power to the point it become vulnerable to catastrophic failure.  Add global guerrilla systemic disruption to the mix and we are in for a disaster.

Note:  This effort is led by mens such as Mansoor:  Mansoor is the son of Nasrullah Mansoor, one of the most respected Afghan guerrilla leaders from the time of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s, who terrorized Soviet troops around Gardez. Saifullah Mansoor's reputation as a chip off the old block was cemented when in April 2002 he led a raid in which 18 US soldiers were killed in a guerrilla attack at Shahi Kot in the Zarmat area.

On Jan. 16, Jodie Lane was electrocuted by a street grate while walking her dogs in New York's East Village. Con Edison subsequently reassured the public that only 130 of its 260,000 covers were producing stray voltage that might kill again. (04-29)

Nearly three years after Operation Enduring Freedom was launched, not much of the operation endures and many basic freedoms -- from insecurity, from fear, from poverty -- remain elusive.

Thomas Keller and Per Se

Thomas Keller and Per Se 05/17/2004 02:42 PM

Big article in New York about my favorite chef Thomas Keller and his new restaurant in New York City, The Perfectionist Gets Burned: How Thomas Keller survived the fire that almost took down Per Se.

"Just the other day, Thomas was so proud to show me how they use painter's tape in the kitchen," [The French Laundry Cookbook co-author Michael] Ruhlman says, visiting the Per Se kitchen one afternoon. Instead of tearing the tape from the roll to, say, label the plastic deli cups that hold the ingredients at each mise en place, every strip of tape at Per Se is cut with scissors, every edge perfectly straight. Immaculate. "Because it's all one thing to Thomas. You can't be lax in one area and perfect in another.

"It's not about the sweeping vision," Ruhlman adds. "It's about the minute vision. There are no big decisions. A great restaurant is the result of a thousand little decisions. A place like this is just composed of details. It's a pointillist picture. So every night after service, you'll see Thomas down on his knees, scrubbing out the cupboards."

Ah, that sounds like the Thomas Keller who charmed me as I read Michael Rhulman's wonderful book, The Soul of a Chef: The Journey Toward Perfection. I love the minute vision, the focus on the thousand little decisions, making sure each one is as right as it can be. Of course, such perfectionism is exhausting, but I think that's just how I'm made. And reading this makes me want to take back what I said the other day about not wanting to eat at Per Se. Maybe I do after all...

Dan Bricklin points to Chris Daly's Are Bloggers Journalists? Let's Ask Thomas Jeffeson. Here's a snippet that Dan pulls out of the article: Common Sense and other pamphlets like it were precisely the kind of political journalism that Jefferson had in mind when he insisted on a constitutional amendment in 1790 to protect press freedom — anonymous, highly opinionated writing from diverse, independent sources. In historical terms, today's bloggers are much closer in spirit to the Revolutionary-era pamphleteers than today's giant, conglomerate mainstream media. Both Chris' piece and Dan's discussion of it are well worth reading... [Technorati tags: blogs bricklin...

Thomas Burick on the Future of PC Bots

Thomas Burick on the Future of PC Bots 01/09/2004 11:23 PM
RoboticsTrends.com has posted a recent interview with Thomas Burick of White Box Robotics. According to the interview, it turns out Thomas got his start with the venerable Heathkit Hero robots. The interview provides some background on Burick as well as details on White Box Robotics' 912 series of PC based robots. If you haven't seen the 912 robots yet, take a look - they're some of the nicest looking robots currently available. They're based on the VIA Mini-ITX motherboard. The consumer version of the robots will ship with Windows and proprietary control software from Evolution robotics but the article suggests that a lower-cost "bare-bones" version might be available without the expensive software licenses for robot experimenters and researchers who want to run Linux and one of the more developer-friendly Open Source control systems.

Interview with Dilip Thomas of WROX
about PHP
02/07/2003 09:40 AM
Interview with Dilip Thomas of WROX about PHP Ivan, of the new PHP Traveller blog, just published a good interview about WROX's direction with their PHP books: Q: You seem to have been very busy publishing PHP books. Are there any other books about PHP in the works? Dilip Thomas: There are *many* more PHP books in the pipeline. We have a solid commitment to publishing the best PHP books, and that too on diverse topics. In my opinion, Wrox == PHP in the same sense as ORA == PERL. The next best PHP book to look out for is the "PHP MySQL Website Programming - Problem Design Solutions", that is slated to release in March '03 - It dissects the creation of a complete application driven website (using PHP/MySQL/Apache) from design to deployment (using the very popular Problem - Design - Solution approach). Q: What will "PHP Web Graphics Handbook" and "PHP String Handbook" be about? Dilip Thomas: Wrox Handbook's are new way of providing in-depth information on a specific task of a technology, by documenting the options, problems, best practices (to circumvent the problems) in that particular domain. It endeavours to be a reference for life and transgresses the rather shallow task-specific coverage that specific tasks are accorded to, in our Professional books. The "PHP Web Graphics Handbook" (scheduled for March '03) is an extension of the "Professional PHP Multimedia Programming" book that was released in September '02. It will show readers how to write PHP code that will create professional-looking web graphics and images "on the fly" (using GD, IM, netpbm, JpGraph etc). The "PHP String Handbook" will take a close look at text manipulation, and use of regular expressions in PHP. It will also cover advanced Regexes and patterns. [_Go_] Nice job. Thanks man. If I get a copy of these books from WROX, I'll publish a review. And WROX also now has WROXBASE, an equivalent to O'Reilly's Safari as best I can tell.

Common(s) Sense of Thomas Paine

Common(s) Sense of Thomas Paine 01/11/2004 07:56 AM
David Richards writes, and evilsite.org says, that Thomas Paine assigned the copyright to "Common Sense" to the Continental Congress. Richards speculates he was the first to do so, and should thus be a model for Creative Commons. So at first I thought that was right (the model part; I don't know enough about the history part). But here's why I don't think so now: We should distinguish in this debate between altruistic copyright policy, and reasonable copyright policy. I'm all for altruism, and we certainly don't have enough out there. But Creative Commons is not about altruism; it is about reasonableness. CC says balance, not self-less. It is trying to find a way to restate what balance there should be "in the digital world" (how I hate that phrase). Voluntarily, no doubt, but not self-lessly. Self-lessness, and sainthood, like free and open source software, have enough models out there. CC is not yet another.
