Portless claims best reflashed Linksys WRT54G firmware for open network management to date: As part of ongoing work by several community groups, the Linksys WRT54G has because the base platform to try to tap into because Linksys relied so heavily on open-source software in its creation. It took a little cajoling to remind Linksys of these terms, but then they set up this GPL source download center on their site, which is prominently linked from their Support section. Now, providing the code and giving people direct access to modify firmware are two entirely different objectives, and while Linksys was obliged to do the former, the latter has been the work of many months by several teams who have reverse engineered a number of key elements. The Portless release, say its engineers, relies on and improves the work of other groups and provides a full NoCatAuth portal. (Their software is under the GPL license.) NoCatAuth is an open network authentication project that allows free networks to offer some controls over who uses it and how, such as bandwidth shaping and a click-through terms of service page that must be agreed to. Presently, you must have a separate computer running NoCatAuth, which adds to the complexity. The Linksys WRT54G, one of the best-selling Wi-Fi gateways of all time, is about $80 street price, making a community node a cheaper proposition. Hot on the heels of Apple's Airport Express comes Linksys's Wireless-G Range Expander, which at $99 is cheaper than the Apple option, but doesn't offer nearly the value, either. The WRE54G is only a range extender -- not an access point, like the Airport Express -- and of course doesn't do all the fancy iTunes streaming, which may or may not matter to you. It's designed to work with Linksys's Wireless-G routers and extends both Wireless-G and Wireless-B (the two 'almost standards' that generally work with 802.11b and 802.11g) by plugging into any available wall socket and pressing the 'auto configure' button. It's kind of fruity looking, too, but in a mildly appealing Rebel Hoth base equipment sort of way.

There's not much detail, but there really doesn't need to be -- Linksys has announced a CompactFlash card that supports their 'Wireless-G' standard, which if I'm not mistaken is what they call their not-quite-standard implementation of 802.11g. No word on price yet, but I wouldn't expect it to be much more expensive than the Wireless-B versions. Looks like the product number will be 'WCF54G.'

Heads up, ye owners of the popular Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router. Even if you disable remote administration, the router will still allow users sharing your WiFi network to access administration web pages. That's not the end of the world unless you haven't changed your admin password, which if you're like most of us, coddled by fire-and-forget technology, you probably haven't. If you aren't taking any more steps to secure your router, at least do yourself a favor and change the default password to something else, preferably not the name of a pet, child, or the lady down the hall you've been sleeping with that you think, hey, nobody knows about but really, seriously, we all totally know.

Update: Looks like it's not quite as bad as it could be, as the exploit only works if the built-in firewall has been disabled (it defaults to on). Still, wouldn't this be a great time to verify your settings?

If you buy both, you can use the $10 rebate on both to save $20, then go on to qualify for a $20 gift certificate on future Amazon shopping.

So basically you're getting a really nice, tinker-ready Wi-Fi router for $68 with free shipping. Not a bad deal at all, but if you still aren't seeing why this is a good deal, you probably wouldn't want one in the first place.

My latest TheFeature article is about ways to make tiny batteries last for years.

At Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., researchers are trying to make a nuclear-powered battery with a very long life span. They've built prototype batteries that use a speck of nickel-63 (a radioactive isotope) to vibrate a tiny cantilever. The cantilever could be made from a piece of piezoelectric material, which could supply power to the sensor. Nickel-63 has a half-life of around 100 years, so it could provide power for several decades. Nukes make people nervous, but there's not enough radioactive material in the prototype to cause a mini-meltdown -- it's comparable to the amount found in a smoke detector. Still, researchers acknowledge that they have a perception problem to overcome.
