Internet Explorer Still Vulnerable

Internet Explorer Still Vulnerable 07/07/2004 04:37 PM
A self-appointed security sleuth has uncovered a new vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser that bears a close resemblance to the Download.Ject exploit. Although Microsoft patched Download.Ject last week, Dutch security expert Jelmer Kuperus found that Microsoft's efforts to fix the problem did not go far enough.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-025:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet
Explorer (867801)
08/02/2004 01:10 AM
This update resolves several newly discovered public vulnerabilities. Each vulnerability is documented in this bulletin in its own Vulnerability Details section. If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited the most severe of these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users who operate with administrative privileges. Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately.

Firefox has more security holes than
Internet Explorer?

Firefox has more security holes than
Internet Explorer?
08/07/2004 01:28 PM
As crazy as the title of this news post may sound, it's true to some extent. Mozilla Firefox has managed to rack up 10 security holes in 4 months compared to 7 security holes in Internet Explorer within 4 months. The statistics show that having a product that isn't used by 1000s makes it "more secure" as less hackers/spammers need to attack it.

As the release of XPSP2 has just finished up we should see less IE holes over the coming months but if this trend contines then where will Firefox be in 6 months time?
