Joe's article yesterday (See The Ether) reminded me of something I bumped into a while back about an artist's display in England called field.

Richard Box, the "Artist in Resident of the Department of Physics at the University of Bristol" assembled a display of 1301 flourescent tubes that are illuminated only by the ambient energy from high-voltage transmission lines.

The Search Field

The Search Field 07/01/2004 05:22 AM

One of the new features added to WebCore is an HTML wrapper for the Cocoa NSSearchField, which means you will be able to use this control in your Web pages and Dashboard widgets.

The syntax is:

<input type="search">

The incremental attribute can be used to control whether or not the search is performed as you type.

The placeholder attribute can be used to set the greyed placeholder text in the control.

The autosave attribute allows you to specify an autosave name for your search results in the dropdown. What's cool about the autosave is that it's global, which means that two Web sites could put up a search field with an autosave name of google and then they would share the search results. (Since the actual result values are not accessible to the page there is no privacy violation.)

The results attribute allows you to specify how many results should be displayed in the dropdown.

The search DOM event fires at the precise time the search should be performed and obeys the heuristic for the control, so you don't have to trap key and click events at all. You can use the onsearch attribute on the control to respond when the search happens.

When submitted, the search control will save the submitted result, so that the user can select it from the dropdown when returning to the page.

In addition the search control is a subclass of NSTextField and also supports all of the functionality of the text input element, so you can make it readonly, set a maxlength, etc.

The search control will also even degrade gracefully in other browsers, since they won't recognize the unknown type and so will just use a text field instead.

If you have the 1.3 preview for Panther or are playing with Tiger, you can try this feature out. It works in both.

119 students who failed courses get group email: 119 kids are failing out of the University of Kansas, and now they all know each other.

The students were notified earlier this week that they were in jeopardy of having their financial aid revoked. The e-mail sent Monday by the Office of Student Financial Aid asked for additional information to determine if they were still eligible for aid.

The e-mail address list included the names of all 119 students, with the result that everyone on it could see the names of all the others.

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use 01/07/2004 01:56 PM
The US Army TACOM group is spending $2.25 million on research projects aimed at building robot dogs that can carry a soldier's field equipment and keep up with the soldier over any terrain. Right now, each man has to carry up to 100 pounds of ammunition, food, and equipment. The long term challenge is making a four legged robot that can move as fast and quietly as a man over any terrain. The immediate challenge is making a four legged robot big enough for the job that doesn't fall over and doesn't need an internal combustion engine for power. For more, see Noah Shachtman's interesting article on the program in Wired.

As I announced, we focused on people who are maintaining nodes in the distributed podcasting community directory in our current round of testing. Nick Starr who maintains the AudioBlogs category has already managed a successful conversion. For the most, people were editing their OPML by hand, now that they have an editor whose native format is OPML, the job gets easier and the quality of the output goes up.

I tend to cackle while I work at my computer. Nothing earth-shaking here. This is about as important as the observat ion that I'm more popular than Jesus. Sorry James, no smiley.

Leveling the Playing Field

Leveling the Playing Field 12/10/2003 05:23 PM

Brilliant Collaborative Effort

"These last few days I've been very excited about the PER:NA project, sponsored by the National Library of New Zealand. PER:NA stands for Purchasing Electronic Resources: a National Approach. What the National Library has done is negotiate a consortium deal that covers every library in New Zealand. All sizes. All sectors. School, public, academic, special. Everybody is included.

The idea is that as many libraries as possible sign up for the consortium, which gives us access to some quality general information sources, supplied by Ebsco and Gale. We get access to full-text and bibliographic databases containing business, health, news, and general reference sources, both serials and monographs.

A quick flick-through shows me I could save quite a significant sum by signing up, and gain access to titles I wouldn't have a chance of purchasing any other way. And my customers (colleagues, staff, whatever) like the idea too (which is really what's important). Looks like we are good to go.

I'm really pleased by this. Let's hope it's the beginning of something even bigger, and well done the National Library." [VALISblog]

I missed this when Simon first posted it last month, but this is a fantastic model. I think Canada is doing this, too, at least for academic libraries. Think of the collective bargaining power libraries could leverage if we started working together on this kind of thing. On some level, Illinois is doing this statewide with some FirstSearch databases, but we should be able to do more. Especially in light of recent develo pments.

Track and Field Tech

Track and Field Tech 06/17/2005 03:44 PM

Can We Trust Track & Field Records? - How accurate are they?: Interesting anaylsis of the technology used to time track and field events. This is in the news lately because a Jamaican just broke the 100 meter record by .01 seconds. Not a big margin.

The best systems use a digital camera positioned on the stripe that marks the finish line. This camera has a very narrow field of view and records only the thin slice of space directly above the line. As runners cross the line and into its field of view, the camera takes a rapid series of time-stamped pictures. These create a composite image that shows when each athlete passed through the slice and over the line.

Go Edwards!

Go Edwards! 07/06/2004 12:11 PM
The right-wing National Review is already telling itself that Edwards is bad news for the Kerry ticket. Since I've never been right with a single political prediction (All hail presidents Dukakis and Dean!), it doesn't matter that I think Byron York's article is wrong, but I do. York's reasoning is that Edwards made his national bones with his "Two Americas" stump speech that said nothing about terrorism. Edwards polls just ahead of Kucinich on the issue, according to York. And this is election is going to be about terrorism. Hence, Edwards hurts the ticket. IMO, the Democratic ticket can't afford...
