Will this new sync engine solve every data-synchronization problem Mac users face? Probably not. But because Apple is opening synchronization up to third-party developers with Tiger, many more of those problems will get solved than have ever been solved with iSync. Any Mac geeks out there know if it's possible to install the newer Safari (the one with the fancy RSS stuff built in) without doing a full Tiger install? I'm very hesitant to install Tiger on my only Powerbook, but I'd really like to test out the RSS integration in Tiger....

A Brief Primer On Ice Hockey

A Brief Primer On Ice Hockey 05/24/2004 06:50 PM
The sport of hockey has been the long neglected stepchild of North American team competition. While many have watched the Red Wings on TV, or possibly been to one or two games, hockey is still relatively unknown to most people south of the Canadian border. This is unfortunate , as hockey could be considered the most fast paced and intelligent sports played today.

Geolocation Primer

Geolocation Primer 07/12/2004 02:11 PM

Geolocation tech slices, dices Web: A good, summary article on the next killer app of the Web: geolocation.

Type "dentist" into Google from New York, and you'll get ads for dentists in the city. Try watching a Cubs baseball game from a computer in Chicago, and you'll be stymied. Pre-existing local TV rights block the webcast.

The same technology is also being used by a British casino to keep out the Dutch and by online movie distributors to limit viewing to where it's permitted by license, namely the United States. [...]

As so-called geolocation technology improves, Web sites are increasingly blocking groups of visitors and carving the Web into smaller chunks — in some cases, down to a ZIP code or employer.

Thank God they're keeping out the Dutch...

Community and Networks - a primer

Community and Networks - a primer 05/19/2004 01:21 AM

Jonas posts some interesting stuff.  You may THINK Jonas is a coder - but he's really a social scientist. He just plays a coder in a soap opera called life.

Slideshow Bob!.

sciofhdr

I’ve uploaded the slides for this week’s “Social Capital and Community Awareness” talk. The talk itself was a primer on Social Networks and Social Capital to decision makers in the industry and kindly hosted at the Monterey CIO Summit and Forum. I really appreciated the chance to chime in on the whole “Social” debate, and tried to bring a few points home before the participants broke up into smaller groups.

All in all, I was very pleased, and rather surprised, by the turnout. A few very good questions were asked (and hopefully answered sufficiently) during the Q&A part, with almost thirty attendees and a handful of reporters around, I feel I’ve addressed a somewhat neglected field – the simple question what “we talk about, when we talk about this”.

If you are interested, download the PDF version of the slides above (click on the thumbnail). I know, that slides alone don’t do such an event justice, but it’s a start.

Open Source Primer - NonProfit Open Source Initiative (NOSI)
http://www.nosi.net/taxonomy/term/3?PHPSESSID=fd1e7498 8f8ad719c702419dbddc9fce

NOSI’s acclaimed primer describes what open source software is and what impact this type of software may have on the nonprofit sector. The primer includes: 1) case-studies of nonprofits of various sizes that are using open source software, 2) a process for evaluating whether or not open source is right for an organization, and 3) useful resources and information. Written primarily in non-technical language, the Primer is accessible to a wide audience, including nonprofit managers with little hands-on technical expertise. Bio Diesel conversion primer

Bio Diesel conversion primer 06/15/2004 10:12 AM
On Kevin Kelly's "Cool Tools" ezine, a primer on Bio Diesel -- fuels made from veggie oil. Roll your own renewable fueling station!
I have been running Bio Diesel in my truck for over a year now. Bio Diesel is basically slightly refined vegetable oil that can run in ANY diesel vehicle with little to no modifications. The vegetable oil used can be virgin, but it is generally recycled from fryers at restaurants. Yes, the exhaust smells like whatever was fried in it. The best part of running Bio Diesel is that no wars need to be fought over it: it's entirely domestic, supports US farming, it's totally renewable, and it cuts almost all aspects of a diesel vehicle's emissions by more than 50-75%. (The exception is NOx which is about the same). You get slightly less mileage and power (5% decrease) from petro-diesel, but your exhaust smells a lot better and its actually easier on your engine.

Tweaking MySQL (4.x) Primer

Tweaking MySQL (4.x) Primer 01/19/2004 01:42 AM
Your database driven website was doing well when only Uncle Ted and the guy down the street were viewing it, but now thanks to a brilliant piece of viral marketing your website is being pounded. Before shelling out money for a more powerful server, it would benefit you to see if you could optimize to increase performance. In this article I'll share a few tips I've picked up over the last week or so dealing with optimizing your MySQL 4.x database server. Some are nifty little apps that help you understand what's going on, while others are ways to improve your SQL for better performance. I'm running FreeBSD 4.x personally, so YMMV for some of this if you're using a different OS.

A Brief Primer on Black Pepper

A Brief Primer on Black Pepper 06/15/2004 10:07 AM
Black pepper is a spice that nearly everybody in the world takes for granted. It has been a culinary staple in the eastern tropics for eons, and indeed for the last several centuries the entire civilised world. The most wealthy of Romans were known to have seasoned their exotic cuisine with liberal amounts of pepper. Black pepper can be found in almost any savory dish as has become custom of fine cookery during the Renaissance, particularly in the arts of French and Italian cooking. But what do you really know about our dear friend, the spice affectionately known as black pepper?
