G oogle becomes domain name seller | The Register

Last week, Internet overseeing organisation ICANN and technical arm IANA, quietly approved Google's application and gave it ID number 895. It is now entitled to sell any .biz, .com, .info, .name, .net, .org and .pro domains (but not .aero, .coop, or .museum). Although it denies that it will become a seller of domain names, you have to wonder why?

The Register has an interesting idea..
Then of course there is the possibility that it will find a way of tying in all of its other new services and connecting them to a domain name sale. So, for example, you buy "All-in-one.com" through Google and it gives you Gmail, Blogger and whatever else in a bundle. It does a Microsoft of the internet by getting you to use all its software and services and so give itself an enormous amount of power and control. “

Each day 20,000 plus domain names expire and become available for anyone to register. This is valuable if you are seeking a domain to help you boost your traffic, or are looking to resell the names for a profit. Expiring domain names have been owned by at least one person in the past. This owner may have built a website, advertised, submitted to the search engines, or traded links with another website owner.

Domain Names Selling For Ridiculous
Prices Again
12/26/2003 02:55 PM
More evidence that we're approaching a rehash of 1999. We've seen dot com stock prices going up, IPOs from tech companies that actually do well, traffic increase in Silicon Valley and VC money that is being invested in dot coms with no revenue and no business model. Now, the latest sign of a returning dot com era is that domain names are beginning to fetch high prices again. Someone just sold men.com for $1.3 million, and others believe that the latest land rush for domain names is about to start again. While many of the original domain name speculators went out of business over the past few years, now they're coming back, and buying up as many domain names as possible.
