The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam

The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
08/06/2004 04:41 PM
Aaron writes in to point us to a story at Broadband Reports about a scam claiming to offer "free" broadband, when the truth is anything but that. The company in question is really just offering one of those silly web "accelerator" tools that speed up some dialup web surfing by caching images and using some compression. It's not really broadband at all, though if you're stuck on dialup, apparently it helps. It's also not free at all, since it's a typical pyramid scam, where you need to get others to sign up first. Since they know otherwise intelligent people will know it's a scam, the site doesn't make outrageous claims on their home page, but leaves those only for those who come via a referral code (which is all part of the scam) at which point they start making outlandish claims anyone with a bit of broadband knowledge would know were false.

Are America Online (TWX ) and Microsoft's (MSFT ) MSN relevant in the broadband era? The two online services' latest packages, AOL 9.0 for Broadband and MSN 9, try to make a case but manage no more than partial success. AOL's broadband offering is the richer and better integrated of the two, but I'm left wondering if either is worth the expense.

  • AT&T has the largest Internet protocol network in the world, carrying 1.2 petabytes (that's a million gigabytes) of traffic per day.

Half of U.S. Web Users Now on Broadband — Report: Wow. This came much earlier than I thought it would.

More than half of all U.S. residential Internet users reached the Web via fast broadband connections in July, outpacing use of slower, dial-up connections for the first time, market researcher Nielsen//NetRatings said on Wednesday.

Broadband Changes Slower Than You Might

Broadband Changes Slower Than You Might
Think
12/29/2004 01:55 PM
Back in the late 90s boom years, a lot of companies bet quite a bit of money on the fact that broadband usage would spread very quickly -- and that would open up all kinds of new services and applications that couldn't really be done over a slow dialup connection. A lot of those offerings are no longer around. Now, however, the broadband usage really is catching on around the world, a new look at broadband users suggests they really haven't jumped on "broadband" applications and services just yet. They are using the internet more often and for longer periods of time. It does seem like a more essential part of their lives -- but that's more for the always-on nature of it, rather than the speed. People are doing things like file sharing and downloading content. A few more people are doing VoIP or video -- but, despite the article's headline suggesting that broadband is somehow "changing our culture," it appears that the really innovative uses of broadband haven't completely caught on yet. This is probably a good thing. It seems like the things that are changing are mostly happening gradually, somewhat under the radar, which lets them avoid the hype. There will still be plenty of innovative offerings making use of broadband connections, but they may take some time.

The End of Broadband Service

The End of Broadband Service 03/22/2005 03:33 PM

The FCC reached a decision this week that could effectively end broadband service as we know it. The order hasn't officially come out yet, but the result was leaked.

The FCC granted a petition by BellSouth to pre-empt state regulators from requiring "naked DSL." The procedural aspects are convoluted, so the effect of that action may not be clear. Here's what the FCC is saying. The local phone companies (and, although the ruling doesn't specifically cover them, cable companies) are free to force customers to buy pay for phone service in order to get broadband. Whether or not you use the phone company's voice service is immaterial -- you have to pay for it. Although there are a few telcos willing to sell DSL as a stand-alone service (notably Qwest), one wonders if they will continue to do so.

The FCC ruling makes broadband an extension of phone service, rather than the reverse. It ties the data applications of the future to the anchor of the public switched telephone network. That's perverse. Voice is the application, not connectivity. We'll never have real competition if the incumbents get paid even when customers want to switch to a competitor.

I want to pay someone for high-speed data connectivity, with the opportunity to use (and pay for) innovative applicaitons on top of that pipe. To me, that's broadband service. After the FCC decision, that may no longer be available. That's what I mean by the end of broadband as we know it. For the privilege of buying broadband, I'll have to buy phone service or something else I don't need, raising the effective price. This is the way to promote broadband adoption in the US?

Save TV From/With Broadband 06/08/2004 03:49 PM
A recent survey in Europe has suggested that the rise of broadband use is causing people to watch less TV. And if the trend continues, TV networks will probably have to adapt by using broadband connections to make TV more engaging to audiences. The ground has already been broken with people voting for contestants in reality shows like American Idol. So it's just a matter of making TV even more interactive, and incorporating the creative use of digital communication (email, IM, video capture, etc) is just around the corner.

Sanswire Stratellite

Sanswire Stratellite 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

wifi_balloon.jpg imageAn Atlanta spin-off from GlobeTel called Sanswire Networks will be launching a giant, solar-powered airship next month that will be able to provide wireless data and voice access to areas of earth as large as Texas. While access to the 'stratellite' (for 'airship satellite') will necessitate a special antenna to transmit to the ship 13 miles above the earth, the speeds are being reported as 'DSL alternative' at least. Even if the lag is bad, it sounds as if the bandwidth might be faster than the generally anemic satellite connections (then again, it could be bouncing to another satellite, although that seems unlikely).

Guess we'll find out next month. Too cool.

Buffalo's Wireless LAN Blimp

Buffalo's Wireless LAN Blimp 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

buffalo_blimp.jpg imageThe increasingly bizarre 2005 World Exposition is to take place in Japan this year, and the most recent "what the hell" announcement comes from PC accessory maker Buffalo. In cooperation with Chubu University's "SoLan" solar-powered blimp, Buffalo will provide internet access to expo visitors by equipping the blimp itself with wireless LAN equipment. Four 802.11g access points will be installed inside the blimp, set to take flight about 30 to 50 meters in the sky above the EXPO Dome and other locations. And since you can't really have something like this without a live webcam broadcast, Buffalo went ahead and slapped the necessary equipment for that on it too. I will also mention the setup is not entirely wireless; there is still a cable connecting the blimp to the ground and getting the signal to the wireless access points in the first place.

Navy's SA-60 High-Altitude Blimp

Navy's SA-60 High-Altitude Blimp 07/06/2004 11:39 AM

CyberAerospacePhotos781.jpg imageNow I'm not saying the Navy's new spherical test blimps look like giant, fake space breasts -- just because there's a circle within a circle and a little nipple-looking bit doesn't mean I'd be that crass -- but it does look an awful lot like a peering eye, which I guess would be more in theme, considering the Navy intends to use the new SA-60 blimps as mobile observation posts. And there's even a good reason for the ball-like shape -- the SA-60 can approach altitudes of up to 22,000 feet, almost four times as high as traditional cigar-shaped airships can fly. While the current version is piloted, future iterations will be unmanned to allow for flights of up to two days straight.

When I was in college in the early 90s (B.W. -- before web), I used to subscribe to the daily newspaper just to get my comics fix every morning (back when Bill Waterson, Gary Larson, and Berkeley Breathed were king). Then the web came along and I had to suffer through the only (unfunny) cartoonist to embrace the web. But not anymore. With stuff like Comics-via-RSS and Comictastic I can fire up an app and start laughing every morning. I doubt I ever buy a newspaper again for the funny pages, and on top of that, these even let me avoid the lame ones I don't care about.

Story of the TiVo remote

Story of the TiVo remote 02/19/2004 10:12 AM
The NYTimes covers the birth of the TiVo remote, one of the finest pieces of user-centered design I've ever encountered (if only there were some way to tell, without looking, whether you were holding it upside-down).
The peanut-shaped TiVo remote is at once playful and functional. A smiling TV set with feet and rabbit ears, the company's logo, graces the top. Distinctive buttons like a green thumbs-up and a red thumbs-down button have helped the remote win design awards from the Consumer Electronics Association.

"They did a really good job," said Jakob Nielsen of the Nielsen Norman Group, a technology consulting firm in Fremont, Calif. Mr. Nielsen called the oversize yellow pause button in the middle of the remote "the most beautiful pause button I've ever seen."
