Blogging the convention

Blogging the convention 07/07/2004 04:38 PM

Jay Rosen: My advice to the hypothetical blogger with credentials for Boston is fairly simple. (What's yours? Hit the comment button and speak.) Know what happened to the first regime in convention coverage, why it yielded to television and how it became a media event. Don't join up with the second regime, whose story went dead a long time ago. If in doubt on what to write about, ask yourself who sent you and your laptop to Beantown, and post an account for them. Report backwards to whatever place you came from-- including the opinions you came from. Feed the...

Blogging Against Convention 07/21/2004 06:13 AM
Traditional media love to look down their nose at bloggers. But at this year's Democratic convention, the 35 bloggers covering the festivities could liven things up. Hell, a couple of them could even become traditional media stars. By Adam L. Penenberg.

While much of the blogging world has been ga-ga over getting into the Democratic National Convention, it's tough to find anything interesting going on among the convention bloggers (to their credit, go turn on CSPAN today and see for yourself how boring it is). While our own Jessamyn is there (here are profiles of everyone going), I've found the strange CNN/Technorati partnership to be the most useful thing. Technorati founder David Sifry is basically doing a metafilter of all convention blogs over on CNN as the daily blog roundup, highlighting the posts worth reading among the participants.

Brian Reich at Campaign Web Review is researching what will be a series of posts about convention blogging. To that end, he's posted some questions for convention bloggers. As a credentialed blogger at the Democratic National Convention, here's my take on some of them: What did you think of the Convention? What does David Letterman's couch think of David Letterman? We were all just props for the TV. I ended up staying home the night of Kerry's speech so I could watch it on TV to see how it really was. That aside, the convention was both exhausting and exhilirating....

Bill Gates' employees were way ahead of the boss when it came to blogging, but it's good to see Gates' endorsement (BBC) nonetheless. If he gets it -- and he obviously does -- then a lot of other folks are sure to follow. I wonder how soon blogging will become a natural, integral part of the operating system. RSS would be a good start.

The last convention?

The last convention? 07/26/2004 12:44 AM
Will we ever do this again? Is 2004 the last year we're going to have national conventions like these? I just came back from picking up my credentials, which meant taking the T down to the Fleet Center, waiting on the wrong line, being directed by a series of five polite cops to the press office, and then being told that bloggers pick up their credentials at the Westin Hotel five subway stops away. My fault for not finding out ahead of time where to go. But the trip to and then around the Fleet Center was instructive, for...

At the next convention

At the next convention 08/05/2004 10:40 AM

Chris Casey of the Democratic News Service asked, on the Convention Bloggers mail list, what we would do differently for 2008. Here's what I say.

In retrospect, it would have been incredible to have a BloggerCon at the DemCon. Off the floor. A room packed with big Democratic icons, the candidates, the operators, the money, the press.

A discussion leader. Let's get to the heart of things. Let's explain to the folks at home how this really works.

We've shown you what the convention looks like to a hayseed in the big city. Now what does it look like from the insider perspective.

And by the way, it's cool that you're all so excited about blogs. Really cool. But what about your friends at the RIAA. They're not our friends. Not because we're pirates, but because we love the First Amendment, like Democrats do. The two positions are not compatible. You can't love blogs and love Hollywood at the same time.

But this iteration was great. Next time let's give the people what only they have. Power. Government of the people, by the people and for the people. Shall not perish from the earth.

Dan has a lovely piece about blogging and observing the Convention. I find I have no coherent expectations about it or what I'll write about. I bounce from thinking that I'll react to the Big Speeches to reporting small anecdotes to reading the clips of Mailer's 1960s political coverage and thinking "Take away the talent and incredible insight, and what's he got that I don't got?" I can't even anticipate how cynical or filled with spirit I'll be; I am, after all, perfectly capable of crying at a good political speech. (It's hope that turns on the ol' waterworks. Gotta...

Joe Gandelman responds to the LA Times commentary that takes us Convention bloggers down a couple of pegs. Joe points to the resentment journalists feel towards bloggers because we haven't "paid our dues." True enough. Bloggers who think that just because they got a free account at www.BlogYourAss.com, they can now displace professional journalists are seriously underestimating the skills, dedication and value of real journalists. (Yes, real journalists.) Of course there are bloggers who are as skilled and dedicated as any professional journalist. In fact, some are professional journalists. But most bloggers aren't. That's by no means a criticism. Most...

More Convention weirdness 07/29/2004 11:28 AM
Last night, in a self-reflective capstone to the list of weird media moments at the Convention, Melissa Fitzgerald — CJ's assistant, Carol, on The West Wing — came by to talk with the bloggers. She was there to promote Environment 2004's ecological agenda. Why come to the bloggers? Because we're the future of the media, etc. etc. Being a celebrity, um, camp follower — and having utterly failed to satisfy my children's requirement that I come back with photos of The Daily Show correspondents — I interviewed her. What's her political background? Her parents know Gov. Ed Rendell and she's...

Convention Bloggers and the Future 07/30/2004 03:55 PM
For all the occasional self-absorption and recursive coverage of coverage of blogging at the Democratic National Convention, it's clear that the experiment must be chalked up as a success. The bloggers' work ranged from abysmal to terrific, sort of like traditional journalism. What's important to keep in mind is that this was one of those moments when things pivot slightly. The accreditation of bloggers to the convention was an affirmation by a highly centralized hierarchy -- the Democratic Party -- of an evolving kind of information flow. That the even more centralized Republican Party has felt obliged to include bloggers is evidence of the shift.

Eratech EMP-Z II Review 06/24/2004 07:58 AM

eratech_emp-zii.jpg imageI want to hate the Eratech EMP-ZII. I mean, it's an MP3 player shaped as a shiny metal egg, right? Sure it's cute, but it must suck. Lo and behold, though, as I read through this review at I4U, I kept finding more and more to recommend it -- earphone cords that double as the necklace? Custom uploadable wallpaper? Nice. With only 128MB of memory (at least as reviewed), the EMP-ZII is really more jewelry than MP3 player, but for whatever reason -- probably because they seem to have done such a good job with it -- I'm fine with that.

No US prices or distributors yet, but the word is that's soon to change.
