holiday weekend, a move that analysts say may mean a mean summer for
computer users. Two new versions rolled out over the weekend —
Bagle.ad and Bagle.ae — that are similar in form and function to
earlier variants. What’s new is that some copies of the worm
arrive with extra baggage: its source code, unencrypted. While the
worm packs its own assembly language source code, it’s
encrypted. But the worm may also carry an additional payload, an
in-the-clear copy of the source code in a compressed file named
‘source.zip.’ Not every copy of Bagle comes with source
code,’ said Joe Telafici, the director of operations for
McAfee’s anti-virus research team. ‘A certain percentage
does, however, so the author’s either setting up a smoke screen
or dropping the source to give plenty of ‘script kiddies’
the chance to make changes.’

12/28/2004 07:14 PMAs we reported last week, Google had been used by
the "Santy.A" worm to infect websites using vulnerable
versions of phpBB. Google has since disallowed such search attempts by
the worm, by simply not listing vulnerable sites in their search
results.
Variants are now attempting to exploit search engines offered by Yahoo
and AOL, targeting sites running versions of phpBB prior to version
2.0.11. Some variants of the worm damage sites using poorly coded php
instances of include() and require(). AOL claims that they are now
unaffected, but Yahoo has yet to comment on their security status.
Santy deletes content from effected php-based sites, and replaces it
with information found within the worm itself. Luckily this worm is
not communicable to computers who visit effected sites. Sites using
older versions of phpBB should update immediately, and some sites
utilizing php may have to be rewritten all together.

Trend Micro Inc has released an overview of a worm that is currently
doing the rounds infecting users PC's and transferring itself through
the MSN Messenger service.
MSN Messenger is under attack of a worm that comes with a seductive
name and download link. The user clicks on the link and gets the copy
of attached worm for his PC. The worm can spread on the network and
shared computers. The worm can disable the Anti-Virus software and
then infect the Files in PC, It can also spread easily after it
disables anti virus program.
Trend Micro Inc. has also raised the threat level on the W32/Bropia
worm. The company said that worm could cause more harm in case it
spread more through MSN Messenger buddies and Shared Networks. The
virus has antidebugging feature also.
The virus logs keystrokes. It can also retrieve credit card numbers
and other sensitive information. The W32/Bropia worm contains a
variant of the Rbot backdoor Trojan. The virus could be a higher
threat to sensitive information as it can store information. It is
also capable of using the infected machine to hijack sensitive
data.

it. Anyhow, when it comes to Office software, I’m less
interested in its code (source or object) which should be disposable
and replaceable, than I am in its output. Some call them “office
documents”; I prefer “intellectual heritage”, “racial

the importance of source code access in open source. Most point to
source code availability as the premier benefit open source delivers,
without offering any substantive reasons to support the claim. As I
noted, while open access to source code may matter for some, its
benefits pale in comparison to the benefits associated with open
source distribution. In summary, open source business models yield
dramatically lower sales, marketing, and product distribution costs,
enabling upstart competitors to undercut established vendors on price
while providing their customers Porsche technology at Pinto pricing.
