Learning by Doing

Learning by Doing 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
Real-time programmer Jack W. Crenshaw has written a fascinating, if not directly robotics-related, article on the differing opportunities for learning by doing that exist for kids today compared to a generation ago. Jack learned by taking apart model trains, clocks, and the Sturmey-Archer 3-speed hub from his bicycle. But how could someone growing up in today's world learn about computers in the same way? He goes on to describe toy-like machines that implement digital principals such as flip-flops, counters, and logic-gates in a mechanical way that allows you to see, touch, and disassemble them. He doesn't mention it in his article, but I think robotics kits offer kids some of the same opportunities to take apart and understand modern machines.

Learning to let go

Learning to let go 05/19/2004 02:41 AM
Accessibility and Usability are discussed a lot more lately than the last few years. Many rumours and half truths about accessibility and the law make non technical colleagues come up to us with questions about accessiibility. Most developers make the mistake of considering accessibility a technological problem, which is only partly the case. We do not need new technology, as old browsers are here to stay, we need to rethink the design of the products we make, we need to learn to let go.

Oh, Sure, Now The MPAA Settles With 321

Oh, Sure, Now The MPAA Settles With 321 08/10/2004 01:58 PM
Sometimes you wonder why they even bothered. After completely stompin g 321 Software out of business by saddling them with lawsuits claiming their useful software was a tool of pirates, rather than for backing up what people legally owned, now the MPAA announces that they've "settled" with the company. Seems like a Michael Corleone-style settlement. Meanwhile, Jack Valenti gets in a bogus quote about how this shows that there's no leniency for breaking copyright laws. Of course, there's never been any proof that anyone using 321's software broke copyright laws - which is something 321 showed by offerin g a $10,000 reward for anyone who could find a "pirated" DVD made using 321's software.

FTC Settles With Spammers

FTC Settles With Spammers 05/07/2004 02:58 PM
Last year (before CAN-SPAM was even in place), the FTC sued a couple of spammers for using deceptive subject lines and spoofed email addresses to send people to a porn site. The spammers have now settled with the FTC and agreed to give back $112,500 that they received from the spam. Of course, I wonder if that's all they really received from the spam. Besides, if they just are giving back what they made from the spam, then there seems to be no actual punishment on top of that for spamming. Also, if the FTC could go after people for misleading subject lines and spoofed return addresses, why did we need CAN-SPAM in the first place?

Google Junk Mail 12/03/2003 08:38 AM
My nephew registered a domain name for his Sensei about a year ago. My nephew's name does not appear anywhere on his Sensei's very minimal, single-digit-trafficked site. My nephew got junk mail (of the paper sort) from Google addressed to him at his Sensei's address. My nephew is quite confident that there's only one place on the planet where his name appears linked to his Sensei's address: in the domain registration. So, is Google snail-spamming everyone in the US address who owns a domain name? I know I got mine....

Antispam bill won't end junk e-mail 12/26/2003 11:23 AM
An antispam bill that was poised to become law at press time may do little to stem the barrage of junk e-mail, according to CIOs. The legislation, called the Can-Spam (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing) Act, would require senders of unsolicited commercial e-mail to let recipients opt out of future mailings, set penalties for sending deceptive messages and create a national Do Not Spam list.
