People Relate Personally To Their
Computers
04/26/2004 02:13 AM
It appears that people tend to believe the computers they use have human characteristics, which often makes them much more loyal to a particular computer. The study focused on students using machines in a computer lab, and saw that certain students always wanted to use the same machines - even if others were free. The researchers are suggesting that computer makers start to take this into account in their advertising, and focus more on the human-like characteristics to entice buyers to buy their particular machine.

http ://www.philly.com/mld/philly/living/health/7908331.htm

Lofty goal - Computers people can talk with. Day is nearer when devices understand. By Robert S. Boyd. Philadelphia Inquirer. "Reading aloud is the simplest challenge in the 40-year struggle to teach human language to computers. Other computer-language skills are more complicated. They include taking dictation, responding to questions or commands, identifying a speaker, translating languages, and carrying on a modestly intelligent conversation on a limited subject, such as what's at the movies. The greatest challenge is to get a computer to 'understand' natural language and respond appropriately. The National Science Foundation is soliciting proposals for new research to enable people to 'address a computer at any time and any place at least as effectively as if they were addressing another person.' The goal is to make computers 'behave more like humans, so that humans don't have to adapt to a machine using a mouse and a keyboard, but instead the machine adapts to the human,' said James Glass at the Laboratory for Spoken Language Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ... Getting a computer to understand is harder than getting one to talk. Nevertheless, voice-recognition programs are in common use today by telephone companies, airlines, and business customer-service desks."

Falling Spiders

Falling Spiders 05/04/2004 02:30 AM
So I'm laying in bed while talking on the phone and I notice a spider walking on the ceiling several feet above my face. That of course got me wondering (or maybe worrying?) if the spider would fall on my face during the night. Not being a fan of spiders, that's a mildly disturbing thought. But then I realized that spiders are really good at not falling. In fact, I've only seen spiders fall in very specific circumstances. When one...

The truth about camel spiders

The truth about camel spiders 04/09/2004 04:04 PM
camel_spiderHere's the myth about camel spiders, the monsters of the Iraqi desert.
"Supposedly they leap onto the backs of camels and suck out the blood. I've been told that a couple of these things can kill a full grown camel."
Link

"Here's the lowdown on camel spiders, which aren't spiders at all:

In reality, camel spiders aren't some mysterious Arabian creature -- we have them in the United States and in Mexico, where they are called matevenados. They are slightly smaller than the human hand, and while they do run quickly, their top speed is 10 miles per hour, not 25. But they also make no noise, they excrete no venom, and although they can be voracious nocturnal predators, they don't eat camels. They eat delicious crickets and pillbugs, and sometimes scorpions."

Active Directory

Back in the day (back before there was broadband, son), telecommuting meant connecting from home to the office by dialing in over a modem to one of possibly, a bank of modems in the telecomm room at your workplace. Typically, this was accomplished at bit rates of 1200 or 2400 baud. As more and more people attempted to dial-in to the network and as directory-based authentication began to be seen in small and midsize businesses, a new protocol and standard was developed: the Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service.

Geek Conferences: Nothing to Fear but
Fear Itself

Geek Conferences: Nothing to Fear but
Fear Itself
02/16/2004 05:37 AM
Is the O'Reilly Emerging Technologies Conference elitist? This question seems to be stirring up the blogosphere, and causing lots of good people who I read and like to throw verbal bricks at each other. I thought that as someone who is clearly not a member of the blogging elite, I might have a useful perspective to offer. Is the conference elitist? Of course it is - and no, it isn't. Both are true. It is elitist in the sense that it requires interest, knowing that the conference is going to happen, and being able to come up with the large amounts of time and money to attend. This rules out a very large proportion of the world. However, if someone is motivated and willing to rough it, it is possible to attend the conference for a lot less money than the standard cost of the conference and swanky hotel. In my case I found cheap late night flights on Southwest, stayed in a very cheap hostel (though not as cheap as the hacker loft crash pad), and got a free pass to the conference by writing and asking Tim O'Reilly nicely for one -- I saw other free passes being given away via the Wiki. So the money doesn't have to be the huge barrier it seems like at first, but attending does require a bit of luck and or chutzpah, geographical proximity, and being willing to stay in considerably less than stellar accommodations. The conference can also feel elitist because so many of the people who attend know each other. Many of them have long-standing professional, technical and personal ties (and ongoing feuds). If, like me, you are somewhat reticent by nature, you don't have ties to lots of people at the conference, and you don't have any particular product or idea to promote, it can be easy to feel intimidated or like an outsider surrounded by insiders. For instance, one day of the conference I ran into Dan Gillmor, Doc Searls, Micah Sifry and Scott Rosenberg at a cafe next door to the conference. I read 3 out of 4 of them regularly, I respect their work a lot, and I would have enjoyed sitting at their lunch table and listening to them talk. Did they invite me to join them for lunch? Of course not, no more than I would invite a random stranger I saw...

Fear of RSS

"However, whether or not to use RSS on your site should no longer be an option. I believe it has become a necessity if you wish to compete with others in your industry....

For many users today, bookmarks have become useless since we have too many of them. Bookmarks allow for information overload just as easily as RSS does, but the difference is that RSS allows updates through all that information overload. A bookmark gets hidden, but if you update your site then the RSS feed will reflect that and tell the reader its time to view the content....

With the plethora of sites around fighting for the mindshare of your readers becomes essential. Why lessen your chances by not including a RSS feed? That opens the gates for everyone else to increase their readership. RSS feeds create more opportunities and the advantages outweigh the disadvantages." [BusinessLogs, via del.icio.us/tag/rss]
