Wood Block Clock
Wood Block Clock
08/12/2004 09:20 AM
Despite what you might think, this clock is a solid piece of wood
with a faux cord running out of the back, designed to purposely
confound you into ignoring the fact that the only method in which a
block of wood could display the time is if it were impelled by dark,
heathen sorcery. If this were not the case, why would the burning red
numbers show an hour to have 66 minutes twice a day?
It's either that or there is a thin veneer front that shows light
through it from behind. I say we burn it anyway. (Thanks,
Martin!)

Building with wood is eco-friendly?
Building with wood is eco-friendly?

David Pescovitz:
A new research report shows that wood is one of the greener materials
that can be used to build homes. According to the report, prepared by
the
Consortium for Research on
Renewable Industrial Materials, the environmental impact of
fabricating building materials and actually constructing a home is
more intense than most people realize. And while the industry has
slowly moved away from wood, the use of dead trees may actually be
better (well, less bad) than other products and techniques. From a
press release about the report:
The research showed that wood framing used 17 percent less
energy than steel construction for a typical house built in Minnesota,
and 16 percent less energy than a house using concrete construction in
Atlanta. And in these two examples, the use of wood had 26-31 percent
less global warming potential...The growth of wood in renewable
forests works to "sequester" and remove carbon from the atmosphere,
and fewer carbon emissions are created in the processing needed to
produce wood products than their steel and concrete counterparts.

My friend Roger Wood is a genius clockmaker who builds clocks into
assemblage sculptures made from found objects, antiques, rust, and
vacuum tubes. He publishes an irregular newsletter showcasing his
latest creations, such as this one, which is similar to one that I
bought from him before I moved to London, which was the first piece of
decor I put up in my new flat after moving in. Every place I've lived
since I left Toronto has had a Roger clock in it, and it wouldn't feel
like home without one.

JVC knows how to make fancy looking speakers. The
new "SX-WD10" and "SX-DW505" do that, too. There must be something
about wood and speakers that people like. But what's this? "Copper
Clad Aluminum?" It seems to me speaker manufacturers just sit around
and come up with the most exotic materials they possibly can, and
claim it produces higher quality sound.

Cory Doctorow:
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Zed show has done a segment on
my pal
Roger Wood, the mad
assemblage clockmaker.
Roger Wood creates with time in mind. Yet even though the clock can be
a consistent element of his work, it's often secondary to its
creation. Whether it's a curious timepiece or a unique assemblage,
Wood thrives on working with an immeasurable array of findings from
the tarnished and forgotten to the odd or intriquing. He is a devoted
collector of usual and unusual objects with one thing in common, a
history.
The source of his inspiration lies in the hundreds of curiously
labelled drawers and boxes brimming with artifacts of all description
that line the shelves of his Toronto studio. Wood orchestrates an
arrangement from his myriad of treasures until the precise moment that
it feels right. Then he quickly glues them all down so they can't
escape.
Playful, wondrous timepieces emerge that take flight on cherubic
wings, float and sway on fine wires, or appear frozen mid-explosion
with flying springs and cogs that bounce at the touch.

My nemesis: a 1'-high wood-and-steel
platform
04/02/2005 01:49 PMMy third flight in "Sky 12" became unexpectedly challenging when
the GPS receiver for the microwave uplink failed. Normally the
transmitter automatically aligns itself to point at the TV station and
send them a feed from the helicopter's camera. It can't do this
alignment if it doesn't know where the helicopter is and without its
GPS the only solution is for us to aim the transmitter manually.
My supervising pilot was Rob Roberts, who has been doing this for 9
years and is an expert in every facet of the operation (see earlier
story). Nonetheless if the helicopter changes its position or
orientation the transmitter will need to be reaimed. So we are
forced to do all of our filming from an out-of-ground-effect (mid-air)
hover, which I establish about one minute before our signal is due to
be broadcast. Rob doubles as "talent" and is one of the two
pilots qualified to be an on-air reporter, for which we have a small
camera pointed inside the helicopter. About 45 seconds before we
go live, the guys back at the station say "we're receiving your feed;
don't move!" This turns out to be one of the cruelest
things possible to say to a helicopter pilot. Inset into the
camera monitor on my side of the machine is a little window showing
the actual broadcast coming out of the TV station and into
homes. The little picture and the producer's words serve as a
constant reminder that "any kind of screw up and the screens
inside 100,000 Richmond homes will go blank. This kind of
reflection turns out not to be conducive to good flying.
For the rest of the week I was able to handle most aspects of the
job without too much fear or incompetence. However at the end of
every flight the fearsome dolly would be waiting. If we
just landed on the ramp it would be too hard for the maintenance guys
to pull the Jet Ranger into the hangar. So we land on a
surprisingly small dolly, about 1' high, which they then tow with a
golfcart-style tug. The dolly is a few feet wider than the Jet
Ranger's skids and a bit longer fore-and-aft so it shouldn't be all
that tough. However, the one thing that you are taught as a
helicopter pilot is never to look down at the ground when you're
trying to hover. You always look off into the middle
distance. Looking down leads to overcontrol and wild
oscillations. Another problem is that the skids of the Jet
Ranger are not easily visible to the pilot, unlike with a Robinson
R22. Finally there is the issue that if you get the helicopter
into a position where it might fall off the dolly, or at least half
off, there is a serious risk of dynamic rollover and having to go out
and buy another $1 million helicopter. This is the bit of
knowledge that makes the whole thing hard. If there were just
some painted marks on the asphalt and the consequence of missing them
were being embarrassed and picking the machine back up or buying lunch
for the line guys it would be easy. But the consequence is
spectacular destruction and this ruins almost everyone's
concentration. Apparently there is an expert instructor at the
Bell factory school who refuses to land on a dolly. He doesn't
have to do it regularly so he sees no need to add this kind of stress
to his life on occasion. Sadly at HeloAir one does have to do
this after every flight and it turns my knuckles white. At the
end of the week I'm able to do it with only a bit of help from Rob but
I would not want to try it by myself.
