The other analyst
The other analyst
01/06/2005 09:16 AM
Turns out, one of the "other analysts" that Michael Signer spoke of
was a blogger named
James Govenor. In the comments to my previous post, James writes:
"actually it was me. i got a quick email from Michael and
gave him a
rapid response. its pretty harsh to accuse him of making the idea up
if
he attributed it to an analyst. Basically i felt that you are doing
good work with Roller, and engaging with Sun customers, but that Sun
itself has said basically not much about the future of the product at
all. Michael had heard a sniff of an open source splash and is looking
for ideas. i have not got the inside skinny, but i could easily
imagine
Sun "packaging" the Roller and open source news, or changing the
license. or something. Either that or open sourcing some other JES
componentry. Feel free to set the record straight. What are Sun's
plans
for Roller?"
James,
I assumed that he was making things up because he was so far off base.
How could he not know that Roller is already open source? Development
is done on a public CVS server, issue tracking is public, and
discussions happen on public mailing lists, blogs, and the Roller
wiki.
James asks that I "set the record straight" and "what are
Sun's plans for Roller?" I'm not going to
discuss Sun's future product plans or announcements, but my personal
plan is to make Roller -- and I'm talking about the
open source version of Roller -- the best possible platform for
blogging, collaboration, and community building. If you want to know
how that plan is going, watch me work.
Sun's no-op announcement
Sun's no-op announcement
02/01/2005 08:49 PMLast year IBM took a significant step forward in cooperation with the
free software community, by offering blanket licenses for 500 of its
patents to all free software developers. This does not cover all of
IBM's software patents, which must number in the thousands. And there
are other areas where IBM does not yet cooperate with the free
software community--they have not provided the necessary information
to port a free BIOS to ThinkPads, for instance, and they are still
pursuing Treacherous Computing. Nonetheless, this is a real step.
Recently Sun made an announcement that superficially seems similar. It
said that Sun had given us "free access to Sun OpenSolaris related
patents under the Common Development and Distribution License." But
those words do not really make sense. The CDDL is a license for the
copyright on software, not a policy for licensing patents. It applies
to specific code and nothing else. (Copyright and patents have
essentially nothing in common in the requirements they impose on the
public.)

ALL stuff, not just that that's friendly.
Heck, Sun's doing some cool work here and it should be paid
attention to -- particularly by Longhorn evangelists.

Sun's identity pitch
Sun's identity pitch
12/16/2003 12:30 PM

At SunNetwork 2003 back in September, Jonathan Schwartz made the case
that the Java card is the most strategic piece of Sun's whole
technology stack. Actually, I'd say per-employee pricing is the real
strategic innovation. But I've always hoped to see movement on the
identity card front, so
this
clip, in which Schwartz stresses something I've been harping on
for years, got my attention:
Java card support will be built into the desktop that we offer. It is
the fundamental way we will help people to understand that if there
were a menu item in your mail app that said, 'Show only mail from
people that have been strongly authenticated,' then spam would
disappear. 'Show me only content that has been strongly
authenticated,' viruses would disappear.

Sun's Looking Glass Provides 3D View
Sun's Looking Glass Provides 3D View
08/14/2004 10:24 PMRecently Sun Microsystems released to its developers more code
containing its 'Project Look Glass" technology. Project Looking
Glass will offer users a 3D Desktop. Sun is hoping that this
technology will give users a more exciting computing experience, and a
good boost to its public image.
In order for this technology to succeed Sun needs to know what
developers think of it. Without the support from other developers
Project Looking Glass isn't going anywhere. So Sun has shipped early
code of its latest project to developers. This is according to Craig
Nicholas a technical support engineer at Sun. Apparently Project
Looking Glass isn't an operating systems at all (despite earlier
rumors); instead it’s a 'skin' that nearly sits on top of an operating
system states Craig Nicholas. Though only 3D applications will be
able to take advantage of Project Looking Glass, Sun is working hard
on an application that will automatically rewrite the window
management code in order for it to run in a 3D environment.
Early screenshots and videos of Project Looking Glass look very
promising, but it’s unclear what Sun hopes to accomplish with it. A
while ago Sun promised that it would open up its code to the
open-source community, but in doing so what would Sun gain. The last
time I checked Sun needed money.

Quitting Smoking
Quitting Smoking
07/21/2004 04:53 PMDave Winer writes
about his experience quitting smoking, and it reminds me of my
experience quitting. Many years ago I was a smoker, and it took a
couple of tries before I quit successfully.
My first attempt at quitting was doomed to failure. See, I noticed
that my cravings were stronger when my friends and I went bar-hopping,
so I told myself I'd only smoke when I was drinking. The result? I
drank more. Duh.
So I quit cold turkey, and that was well over a decade ago. I've
smoked one time since then, about three years ago - not a perfect
record, but not bad. The thing that made it easier to quit was that I
stopped smoking right after the end of a relationship gone sour. I
figured as long as I was giving up one bad habit, I might as well give
up smoking at the same time.
Quitting Is Not A Problem
Quitting Is Not A Problem
12/02/2003 01:26 PMA new study has found that, despite the slower job market, employees
are
just as willing to quit their job now than they were at the height of
the boom years, when jumping ship seemed like a monthly option for
some workers. Many people will jump for just a little bit more money,
but good working conditions and the belief that the company is going
somewhere helps. Of course, many companies have been treating their
employees terribly lately, believing that they have no other options -
but that may be changing.
