Cheap, Illegal Software
Cheap, Illegal Software
06/10/2004 05:43 PMOEM
software scams on the rise: In a moment of serious self-delusion I
almost fell for one of these outfits. Yes, I'll admit, I wanted Dreamweaver
MX for $60.
[sigh] Too good be to true, and all that.
It is not difficult to recognise the pirates from reputable
resellers: their prices are typically much lower than those offered by
official resellers. They often use anonymous domain hosting services
and their sites lack sufficient contact information.
More importantly, the software they offer is unlikely to be OEM.
Adobe never offered Acrobat or Photoshop (with the exception of
Photoshop Elements) as OEM software, but it is widely available from
OEM vendors.
I asked Chris for his opinion, and he noted that the ordering page
of the site I was looking wasn't even secured with SSL.
Yikes.

Cheap Computing and Open Source Movement
Reduce Software Costs By 90% For Small
Business.
01/05/2005 03:13 AMSmall Businesses who want enterprise software such as CRM (Customer
Relationship Management), Project Management, and eLearning have
typically been ignored by the software industry. Change is coming,
however, and it may be the software makers themselves who end up
feeling left out. With abundant and cheap computing power and new
feature-rich Open Source Business applications, small businesses can
now bypass commercial software altogether. With Managed Application
Service providers filling the technological gap, small businesses can
digitize key parts of their operations without making large
investments in consultants, hardware, or software licensing. [PRWEB

Microsoft’s cut-price XP flops in Asia
03/19/2005 03:25 AMTHEY SAY NO GOOD DEED goes unpunished. Microsoft's mission to bring
cheap Windows to the Asian masses has got off to a very slow start.
Windows XP Starter Edition, a cut down version of the full OS, debuted
in Thailand last October, and Malaysia and Indonesia in February. But
Microsoft’s grand plan to deliver low-cost computing to the developing
world has had a lukewarm response from the all important local system
builder community. The product is not sold at retail, so depends
totally on buy-in from partner companies who are supposed to be
bundling and promoting the software as part of their low end offer.

Sydney Might Have 100 Mbps Wireless
Broadband Coverage
04/29/2004 07:38 AMSydney, Australia, WISP Unwired plans 50 by 60 kilometer coverage at
100 Mbps for 95 percent of Sydney: The company is signing up resellers
and will install 63 towers at a cost of Aus$33 million by July. This
all sounds somewhat unrealistic except that the firm has apparently
already raised a fair amount of money and has its plans quite
advanced. (Perhaps it's a fluke of the Australian market, but I don't
understand how a firm raised money without a plan just by using a
shell listed company to avoid the IPO process.) The article muddles
terminology enormously, which isn't unusual when new technologies
appear. The journalist writes, Unwired's 802.16 standard-compliant
Ultra Wideband (WiMax) network... Ultrawideband (UWB) is a
short-range, high-speed technology. 802.16a is the standard underlying
WiMax which has no final spec yet nor a certification program in
place. The last graf is somewhat mystifying: It has been reported that
Intel is involved in the WiMax Forum certification group, an
international 802.16 fixed broadband wireless access standard lobby
group. Intel has not been hiding its interest, and WiMax may lobby but
it's mostly about certification and education, from what we can tell
so far....
