Orwell turns in his grave

Orwell turns in his grave 08/30/2004 03:46 PM
President Bush takes plenty of flak for his less-than-eloquent locution, but impromptu fumblings aside, his latest campaign statement on Iraq is a calculated exercise in cognitive dissonance -- an astonishing attempt to whitewash the post-invasion debacle by indirectly "blaming" the U.S. military's victorious surge to Baghdad last year. On the eve of the Republican convention, Bush said that the daunting problems now plaguing the reconstruction are a result of a "catastrophic success," of, "being so successful so fast that an enemy that should have surrendered or been done in escaped and lived to fight another day."

Don Box isn't finished trolling the grave yard of dead software projects.

More on Taligent

By Don Box

Since posting my "taligent effect" entry on Saturday, I ran across this excellent online version of Mike Potel's Taligent book.

Here's my favorite quote:

After furious internal debates in the late 1980s, a new project, code-named "Pink," emerged. It was called Pink because, at a meeting in 1988, key Apple engineers and managers settled on a direction for the company by jotting down ideas on index cards and pinning the cards to the wall in two groups: blue cards, representing technologies that could be supported as extensions to the current system software for Macintosh" computers, and pink cards, representing technologies for a future dream system. The technologies listed on the blue cards eventually formed the core of System 7, Apple's current system software. The pink cards listed precursors of Taligent's object-oriented system software.

As we start to enter the end game of Indigo, perhaps we should start referring to features as "pink" features and "blue" features. The CLR team has a euphemism for pink features - they're called "post-Orcas."

Also interesting was my chance conversation with Chris Lovett, dev lead and architect of the XML editor in Whidbey. He happened to mention that he was at Taligent, and had numerous insights into why the project ended the way it did.

[gotdotnet]

All I know is that Pink (and Jaguar) swallowed up some fine talent - including Eric Neumann - one of MacroMind's founders. Many of those folks went to work at Kalieda Labs.

I alre ady told you about what Dave Kaiser did there - but did I ever tell yah about how I was the celebrity poster child for Kalieda?

They paid us to port our "UnDo Me" interactive music video (by the MediaBand) to SctiptX from Director.

Felton was cleaning up around family graves Sunday at Kenai Cemetery when her dog Boo Boo's leash became entangled in a wooden cross beside a nearby headstone. When she stepped onto the grave to get a better angle to free the terrier's leash, the ground collapsed under her foot.

Dick's from-the-grave career in

Dick's from-the-grave career in

With Paycheck (a new John Woo movie based on a Philip K Dick story) opening on Christmas, the time is right for Wired to run a long feature on Dick's life and death, and his posthumous career as a film-writer. I have to confess that I prefer the movies built on Dick's work to the work itself, which I often find clumsily written, thinly characterized, and incoherently plotted -- but when streamlined by a screenwriter and acted out by a cast of talented actors and designed by a stylish director, Dick's work really shines.
Isa and her older half-sister, Laura Leslie, are upstanding Bay Area citizens, both intelligent and obviously competent. Together with their younger half-brother, Chris, who works as a martial arts instructor in Southern California, they control their father's legacy. Russell Galen advises them from New York. The four take their stewardship seriously: They're fine with repackaging a novel to tie in with a movie, for example, but novelizations of short stories are out. And thanks to Vintage Books, every word of his fiction will soon be in print - as you'd expect for an author who's now taught in colleges and cited by the French post-structuralist philosopher Jean Baudrillard.

As for film deals, the estate has become increasingly choosy. "We sort of feel like we have to protect Philip K. Dick's brand image," says Galen. "So we set very, very high prices, and we'll only do business with people who are established. It's ironic, because the films that created the phenomenon started with options that were granted to struggling filmmakers. Today, we shun people like that." Not every movie based on Dick's writings has been a hit: The 1996 film Screamers, starring Peter Weller, and last year's Imposter, with Gary Sinise in the lead, grossed only $12 million between them. "But in Hollywood, what matters is getting the movie made," explains Galen. "If somebody options a story and it's not made, that spoils the track record."

Being that they have I wish their was a way to take all of them that exsist on com, org, biz etc and shove them over there and forever ban them from the other extensions. But this will never happen. But at least from my perspective that segment will be easy to ban in all of my machines. [Yahoo]
