IE Flaws Boost Browser Switching 07/07/2004 04:14 PM

Alternative browsers such as Mozilla and Opera are seeing a huge swell in downloads, but they say security holes in Internet Explorer are nothing new and haven't stopped it from taking 95 percent of the market share.

Microsoft faces up to browser flaws

Microsoft faces up to browser flaws 07/22/2004 09:40 AM
Mass migration to Windows XP could raise serious security questions for users week, another security patch! Microsoft has been pressed into action to release yet another patch to plug a hole in its Internet Explorer 6 web browser, which has accumulated an impressive record of holes: over 150 since 18 April 2001. What is more, it is not even a final solution to the latest in a catalogue of security compromises and back doors created by what should be a harmless, albeit essential, piece of PC software. At Microsoft's TechEd developer conference in Amsterdam earlier this month, I took time out to have a frank discussion with Detlef Eckert, senior director of trustworthy computing at Microsoft about the continuing security problems that are blighting the world's biggest software developer. Right now the company is almost fanatically committed to completing service pack 2 for Windows XP, the most security-focused update the company has ever released for one of its products. The new service pack will introduce a new, more powerful firewall, with basic predictive scanning capabilities, it will enable almost every security feature by default, including the firewall and will also address many existing security glitches in the operating system through a combined patch install, which providing users actually install the service pack, will address any lax patching over the last year.

When Apple unveiled the iPod three years ago, no one (besides possibly Steve Jobs) could have foreseen the tremendous impact it would have on music, technology and, well, life itself. It has already secured its place in history, will likely find its way into the Oxford English Dictionary and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has seen more celebrity pockets than Justin Timberlake’s cell phone number. What used to elicit stares of wonder is now as commonplace as a Dell Dimension. So commonplace, in fact, that the Celebrity cruise I recently took offered its guests an opportunity to rent an iPod. Considering the average age of a cruise-goer, it's certainly an interesting sell. But what's even more interesting is the implications — the concept of music for rent has been slow to take off, but what about iPods for rent? Picture it: Christmas music playing, Santa posing for pictures, cash registers ringing up eager sales … and you’re above it all, listening to Steriogram with your rented iPod. Or maybe your father is. Or your mother. Or your girlfriend or boyfriend, all looking for that perfect gift in the weeks leading up to Christmas. If they tried an iPod — one that wasn’t attached to the Apple Store's dock — perhaps they’d consider buying one. The formula is relatively simply: For $25, a renter could get an iPod for four hours, get a $5 iTunes Music Store credit, and receive a 10-percent off coupon (valid for 30 days, of course). The woman on the ship that I spoke to about the iPod rentals was fairly new to the gig, so she didn't have much information. She did, however, say that the six iPods available were "proprietary," in that they only worked with the ship's computers. Whether this is true or not, I'm quite sure Apple could find a way. And to dissuade stealing, a credit card imprint would be required. Of course, if Apple is content to let other companies sell its products for them, so be it.

Apple *is* switching to Intel chips

Apple *is* switching to Intel chips 06/17/2005 03:29 PM

The WWDC keynote just ended (notes here and here) and the news is pretty big in Apple land: Apple is switching to Intel chips (press release). A few notes:

 • As speculated here and on Slashdot, Intel will not be making PowerPC chips for Apple.
 • Intel will be making x486 chips for Apple.
 • For the last 5 years, every copy of OS X has been compiled on both PowerPC and Intel platforms. This apparently is the long-rumored Marklar project.
 • Jobs says developing apps to run on Intel Macs is easy...there's a checkbox in the developer tools that "makes a cross-platform single binary". Demo of Mathematica running on an Intel Mac from a guy from Wolfram...it only took them two days [some sources are now saying two hours, not days] to port it to Intel.
 • Running PowerPC-compiled programs on an Intel Mac will be handled through emulation. Gold star to John Gruber for guessing this one.

I'm sure there's more, but those are the important bits. And I know this is Steve Jobs talking to us here, but from where I'm sitting (across the country, reading paraphrase transcripts), the transition has been well prepared for by Apple for a number of years and looks like it will happen a lot more smoothly than all the over-the-weekend hand-wringing indicated that it would.

Update: Dave Winer is reporting that:

1. Apple is not going into the software business, their operating system will not run on other vendor's hardware. So you won't be running the Mac OS on Dell, HP or IBM, for example. and 2. While Windows is not explicitly supported, they won't do anything to prevent Windows from running on their hardware.

Update #2: From news.com:

After Jobs' presentation, Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller addressed the issue of running Windows on Macs, saying there are no plans to sell or support Windows on an Intel-based Mac. "That doesn't preclude someone from running it on a Mac. They probably will," he said. "We won't do anything to preclude that." However, Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac," he said.
