Internet Explorer getting slammed again
this week for Security Issues
07/07/2004 04:07 PM

Seems like a broken record of late. Microsoft needs to take some of those billions it has and get it's act together. All it's gonna take to get their attention is if about a million people have their hard-drives destroyed by a hole in Internet Explorer. [ZDNet]

This update resolves several newly discovered public vulnerabilities. Each vulnerability is documented in this bulletin in its own Vulnerability Details section. If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited the most severe of these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users who operate with administrative privileges. Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately.

Firefox has more security holes than
Internet Explorer?

As crazy as the title of this news post may sound, it's true to some extent. Mozilla Firefox has managed to rack up 10 security holes in 4 months compared to 7 security holes in Internet Explorer within 4 months. The statistics show that having a product that isn't used by 1000s makes it "more secure" as less hackers/spammers need to attack it.

As the release of XPSP2 has just finished up we should see less IE holes over the coming months but if this trend contines then where will Firefox be in 6 months time?

MS security flaws slammed

MS security flaws slammed 02/16/2004 10:43 AM
Apple and Linux stand to gain as Microsoft faces mighty challenges this week, with critics warning that its dominance of the operating systems market has created a software 'monoculture' that threatens global data security. Microsoft released a software update last week – almost eight months after critical flaws in its OS were identified; it then saw secret source code for Windows NT and 2000 posted on the Internet in a leak the FBI has been called in to investigate.

If the fact that I run a one-person company isn't proof enough of my masochistic tendencies, then here's the clincher: 10 weeks ago I signed up for a boot fitness program that involved intense strength training five days a week.

I'm happy (albeit exhausted) to report that today was my last day, and over the course of the program I've watched my body fat percentage drop from 19% to 11%.

And like any good programmer, right now I'm celebrating my graduation by gorging on a large Papa John's pizza :)

Back in the day, before interconnected networks, I always carried two or three NetWare client boot diskettes with me when visiting remote sites. Two or three were needed because invariably someone would fold, spindle or mutilate at least one leaving me hours from my own desk and no way to create another. This was also, I might add, before the days of laptops - or even "portables," that euphemistic word for the 40-pound computer you lugged around in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
