Freevibe is an anti-drug website produced by the White House Office of
National Drug Control Policy, producing teen-hip don't-smoke-pot
messages. They offer free hip-hop ringtones to make you think about
not doing drugs every time your phone rings.
You want the Funk? We've got the Funk! This ringtone will get you in
the groove and remind you where to go to get the facts on drugs. And
remember, you have the power to stop your friends from using drugs or
alcohol. That's right--your cell phone is a powerful way to help start
a conversation with a friend who might be using drugs.

Smart Drug Devices That Can Watch For
Cancer, Release Drugs As Needed
04/29/2004 04:25 PMSome very interesting (though, still quite early) research being done
by some Israeli scientists is focused on building nano-scale devices
made of synthetic DNA material that when inserted into the body would
continuou
sly watch for signs of certain types of cancer and, if noticed,
would immediately respond with the proper drugs to fight that cancer.
In test-tube trials, a mix of two different types of these "smart
drugs" correctly noticed the intended disease and released the
response. Obviously, it's still a long way from moving beyond the
test-tube, but this at least sounds promising.

When drug
companies hide data. "The attorney general's
civil suit accuses the drug giant GlaxoSmithKline of committing fraud
by concealing negative information about Paxil, a drug used to treat
depression. The suit says that the company conducted five clinical
trials of Paxil in adolescents and children, yet published only one
study whose mixed results it deemed positive. The company sat on two
major studies for up to four years, although the results of one were
divulged by a whistle-blower at a medical conference in 1999 and all
of the studies were submitted to the Food and Drug Administration in
2002 when the company sought approval for new uses of Paxil. At that
time it became apparent that Paxil was no more effective than a
placebo in treating adolescent depression and might even provoke
suicidal thoughts. My Dad was on Paxil until 26 days
ago..... that's when he shot himself.

What better way to convince kids to stay off drugs than with poorly
conceived and highly uncool ringtones and greeting cards peddled
through an obviously astroturfed website? Perhaps they should sell
t-shirts that say "I Hate Weed and Also Wet the Bed."

Blaming Anti-Virus Companies For Adding
To Spam Mess
Blaming Anti-Virus Companies For Adding
To Spam Mess
01/29/2004 02:49 AMI'm sure I'm not the only person who noticed that plenty of the
annoying myDoom related messages that found their way into my inbox in
the last few days came from anti-virus companies telling me
(incorrectly) that I had sent someone a virus. I didn't send anyone
the virus. As everyone knows, myDoom works by spoofing the "from"
address - just like almost every other virus/worm these days. So, why
exactly, do anti-virus companies continue to send out these messages?
Found over at
Politech is a nice little rant about
just
how stupid it is that these anti-virus companies are continuing this
practice. In fact, the author claims that they're just as bad as
spammers. First of all, they know that these viruses and worms are
spoofing return addresses - yet they continue to send out such "you've
sent a virus" emails, even when they can be pretty sure it's not true.
At the very least, they should be smart enough to not send out such a
message on viruses that are known to spoof emails. Second, many of
these messages include annoying advertising for the anti-virus product
itself. Thus, it's unsolicited commercial email advertising - and it
even violates the CAN SPAM law by not offering an opt-out. So, from
now on, when you get such bogus anti-virus reports, you should report
them as spam to the proper authorities.
Anti-Spam Companies Claim Success; Email
Recipients Disagree
Anti-Spam Companies Claim Success; Email
Recipients Disagree
08/23/2004 12:04 PMBecause companies fighting the spam battle need to market themselves,
many are
touting
how much success they've had in fighting spam. There's just one
problem: most users are seeing more spam. There are ways to reconcile
the differences, though. First, there still are a lot of people who
don't use any spam filter. So, whether or not the spam filters are
succeeding, these people are clearly seeing more spam. Second, even
if the spam filters are succeeding in blocking out 95% or 99% or
whatever percent they like to claim, there's still some getting
through. With spammers increasing the amount of spam they send, the
absolute number getting through increases as well. Still, it does
make you wonder how we should define "success" in fighting spam.
