Keyboard Patents (Reuters)
07/06/2004 01:51 PMReuters - A federal appellate court on
Tuesday said a lower court erred in invalidating two patents
for ergonomic computer keyboards, dealing a blow to Microsoft
Corp. (MSFT.O), which fought to have them invalidated after
being sued by the holder of those patents.

Microsoft and China
06/17/2005 04:38 PMBoy, is the blogosphere ever a buzzin’ over MSN Spaces’ policy of
not allowing yourself to label yourself with inconvenient words like
“Freedom” or “Democracy”. Although I profoundly disagree with
Scoble on this one, you gotta respect him for sticking his head out of
the trench under heavy fire (here and here). Look, there’s nothing in the basic workings of the free market,
nor in U.S. legislation, that says MSN can’t be Beijing’s bitch to
buy some bloggers. But remember, it is a free market, on this
side of the Pacific. So first, I suspect there’s a lot of
people—the kind of creative, independent-minded people that
Microsoft needs—who’d generally rather not work at a company that
does that. And second, there are a lot of other people who’d prefer
to avoid buying products from one. [Update: I’m getting pushback because
it’s been claimed
that Sun sells some of the gear in the Great Firewall. If true (and
it’s believable), that’s sad. It feels quite different to me from
pro-actively suppressing the use of the words “Freedom” and
“Democracy”; but make your own judgment. Anyhow, read the
disclaimer at your right; it’s me, not Sun, that’s talking.]

06/22/2005 01:50 AMBoston Globe columnist Hiawatha Bray writes about Microsoft's enabling
of Chinese censorship, wisely using Rebecca as his primary source.
Good column, although I think he's overly-optimistic at the end about
the ability of the Chinese government to cut off access to sites it
doesn't like. The Berkman report on Chinese filtering paints a more
depressing picture... [Technorati tags: RebeccaMacKinnon HiawathaBray

China, Germany
02/16/2004 10:43 AMAccording to DigiTimes, Acer and Microsoft will focus their tablet PC
co-marketing efforts this year on China and Germany, a move that both
significantly narrows Acer's earlier projected reach and expands it
into relatively new territory. DigiTimes cites the Chinese-language
Economic Daily News as its source on the development and says the
strategy was finalized during a meeting of top executives from the two
companies held in Taipei last week.
