consume less power than the fastest and most powerful silicon chips,
the company said on Thursday.

Incandescent Light Bulbs -- Now With

Incandescent Light Bulbs -- Now With
Nanotubes
06/04/2004 02:03 PMThe incandescent light bulb hasn't really changed for over 100 years,
and it faces competition from
LEDs and
various other more efficient varieties of lighting (fluorescent, etc).
So what kind of "buzz" can incandescent lighting create? Incorporate
nanotubes, of course. Apparently, zapping nanotubes can
generate more
light than tungsten at a given voltage. Researcher have made a
prototype that is basically a modified 40W bulb, but the process for
making the nanotubes probably isn't cost effective just yet --
especially since the bulb only lasted about 360 hours. So aside from
the "neato" factor, I'm not sure what the advantage for using
nanotubes for this really is, unless nanotubes become really easy and
cheap to make someday.

” Researchers from Boston College and Florida International
University have found that nanotubes grown on rough surfaces like
carbon cloth can be coaxed to emit electrons using extremely low
electric fields. Nanotubes are rolled-up sheets of carbon atoms that
can be narrower than a nanometer. A nanometer is one millionth of a
millimeter, or 75,000 times narrower than a human hair. The
researchers’ nanotube-strewn carbon cloth emitted electrons at
the extremely low electric field of…

Pocket-Lint manages to score
the first proper Rio Carbon review I've seen, and certainly the first
to use Guns & Roses as their test music. One thing that is a nice
is the Carbon's drag-and-drop ability, because while music managing
software can be very nice, it's also nice to have the option to just
copy over some music (or whatever) via Windows' Explorer or the Mac's
Finder. From the sound of it, it seems Rio has a real winner in the
5GB hard disk music player. The question is, will the consumer market
think so?

There's a rule in the tech
industry—making something out of carbon fiber makes it cooler. I
don't care if it's a toilet plunger or a car hood, carbon fiber just
sounds more interesting than "shiny plastic." Therefore, we aren't
surprised to see that Asus is giving it a go in the carbon fiber
notebook niche.
A few other folks have gone this route, but Asus seems to have hit
a sweet spot. The V6V isn't too ostentatious. It's got a nice Pentium
M-based chipset, and it's acceptably light—a 15" screen at 5.5
pounds—to warrant the carbon fiber.

I'm glad Rio is actually going to push their new 5GB hard
disk-based Carbon player a bit instead of just letting it languish in
the market - it looks like a pretty solid product (I haven't used it
yet). To that end, they're running a special promotion for the first
500 people to order the new $250 player that includes a
custom-engraved, numbered back, a free shipping upgrade to 2 day air,
and a 3 month/20 track download option from Napster. Oh, and lest we
forget, a limited edition collectors box that looks suspiciously like
someone else's. It might not be enough to sway undecided purchasers,
but if you were already leaning that way, might as well give it a
whirl.

04/09/2004 04:03 PMFor Enlux Lighting, developing a floodlight bulb that uses
light-emitting diodes but offers the same brightness as a 65-watt

odd, because most solid-state L.E.D.'s are not noticeably hot. But Dan
Nelson, the Enlux marketing director, said that was mainly because of
how they are used.

when it is cold, but block the infrared light that heats things up
with only one, fairly showstopping flaw - the coating, as it stands,
is a yellowish green. But they're working on it.
