Wizzard Software (OTCBB:WIZD) announced today they have expanded their portfolio of offerings powered by IBM WebSphere Voice Application Access 5.0. The WizzScribe Software Developers Kit (SDK) and server-based runtimes support the offline conversion of voice audio into text, bringing large vocabulary voice recognition technology to a new generation of business applications. Wizzard chose IBM's WVAA 5.0 solution because of its rapid application environment and built in authentication technologies - freeing the developer to focus on core business application logic. It is IBM's premiere solution for the delivery of voice portals and managed voice applications. [PRWEB Sep 3, 2004]

No sex please -- we're Japanese

No sex please -- we're Japanese 06/04/2004 10:46 AM
USA Today story on statistics published in a popular Japanese news magazine that point to an acute shagging deficiency throughout the country.
Only in Japan would a popular weekly newsmagazine deem it necessary to exhort the nation's youth to abstain from sexual abstinence: "Young people, don't hate sex," AERA magazine pleaded last month in a report detailing a precarious drop in sales of condoms and in business at Japan's rent-by-the-hour "love hotels."

More and more Japanese men and women are finding relationships too messy, tiring and potentially humiliating to bother with anymore. "They don't want a complicated life," says Sakai, who has written a controversial bestseller, Cry of the Losing Dogs, on the plight of unmarried Japanese thirtysomething women like herself.(...)

AERA reports that condom shipments are down 40% since 1993 (probably in part because Japan finally legalized birth-control pills in 1999) and love-hotel check-ins are off at least 20% over the past five years. What's more, an increasing number of those visiting love hotels aren't there for romance, AERA says; they've found that love hotels offer the cheapest access to karaoke machines and video games.

Link. Hope this has nothing to do with the butter dog trend recently reported by Fleshbot. Or, god forbid, her .(Thanks, Invisible Cowgirl).

Japanese Ice Cream 07/07/2004 05:48 PM
OK, here's one of the reasons I love Japan: The way they have no inhibitions about what might go together with something else. How about Spinach Ice Cream? Or Seaweed Ice Cream? Or how about the Raw Horse Meat Ice Cream ("with chunks!")?

Peculiar Japanese

Peculiar Japanese 12/19/2004 03:06 PM

I just got back to Japan after a few weeks abroad. It's the longest trip away from Japan that I've taken in awhile. When I was in the waiting area before boarding the plane, which was mostly Japanese, I noticed that the Japanese people seemed peculiar. I remember feeling this in the past after long trips. It's like suddenly I'm aware of weird Japanese body language, fashion, behaviors and facial expressions. It made me self-conscious too. I'm sure this is a pretty common phenomenon, but it was odd because it was disproportionately stronger compared to a one week trip away. Maybe it's because I was in Paris, South Africa, San Francisco and Boston before returning and the variety of cultures scrambled my cultural blinders. It was also strange reading the International Herald Tribune on China's anger over recent statements by Japanese about ramping up their military while watching the Japanese news in the plane talk about the same thing from their perspective. It was like having two cultural identities coexisting in my head. Somewhere over the arctic, both cultures seemed mighty peculiar.

Read Les Earnest's hillarious story about how his secret decoder ring got FBI on his tail when he was 12 years old.  That was in 1943 but it shows what can happen when paranoia grips a nation.  It could be now if you are related in anyway to the Middle East. [via Gaget opia via Espen Adersen].

Shibori Japanese Tye-Dye

Shibori Japanese Tye-Dye 01/16/2004 12:59 PM
Shibori< /a> is an amazing Japanese textile dying technique--a very sophisticated form of tie-dye, where nubby, lumpy, bizarre things like this are transformed after dying into this fish or these flo wers (scroll for detail) or these starbursts. Specifically this odd thing became this (detail). You can find excellent photos and descriptions of the process here, here(scroll down and hold mouse over photo), and here. There is also information at the World Shibori Network . This photo shows partially dyed fabric and here is a video of the preparation for dying. Shibori is very labor intensive (carpal tunnel syndrome-city) and was a one time subject to a sumptuary tax and one form was outlawed by an emperor for being too extravagant. There are many different knots and ties for different patterns--browse here, here(gallery1-7), and here. Shibori can be used to make some striking and detailed images. Diverse examples of shibori --iris, layer ed squares, waves, kimonos, large bridge banner, subtle black and white winter scene, , a nifty “aerial view†of earth as a tidal pool with hot air balloons (detail of anemones). Don't miss the stunning work of Hiroko Harada (English/Japanese) . I especially like Rain In the Forest, There Are Ripples On the Cloth, Seasonal Changes, and this large installation. You can browse more here, but the Japanese page has more.
