Nepal Wireless project update

Nepal Wireless project update

Nepal Wireless project update 07/07/2004 02:35 PM

BoingBoing reader Marc says:

After reading this previous BoingBoing post in May about the Nepal Wireless project, I decided to interview Mahabir Pun about his work. Some of the responses surprised me, and many of the decisions are in direct contrast to a project in Laos I covered two years ago: they're using Windows and Microsoft NetMeeting instead of open source; they're not localizing; and social mobility isn't necessarily one of the project goals. I think in many ways the Nepalese project is more successful because it's less ambitious. Mahabir also talks about working while living through the Maoist insurgency.

More Wireless in Nepal

More Wireless in Nepal 02/18/2004 02:50 PM
A group of locals and volunteers are using wireless to link together a handful of villages in Nepal and link them to the Internet: It seems that many initiatives to bring the Internet to rural Nepal are focused on trying to use the Internet to improve the lives of people and also to preserve culture. That was the goal in a project I've written about where some Sherpas used wireless to bring the Internet to base camp. Their plan was really to be able to re-use the gear in the village below to bring better educational opportunities and jobs to the people. This group, Nepal Wireless, has already connected five villages where people use the connections for email and to access educational information that has been posted on their intranet....

Tsunami Reconnect Project: Update

Tsunami Reconnect Project: Update 12/31/2004 04:37 PM
Xeni Jardin: BoingBoing pal Mike Outmesguine gives us an update on the blog-driven project to provide free wireless communication services to areas cut off by the disaster:
Here's a rough update. Smartbridges located in Singapore has pledged 5 access points to begin with and more as specific needs arise. They can be used to connect remote locales over a distance or to create coverage in a local area.

Individuals have pledged spare antennas and radio bridges. Several people have volunteered their time and expertise, including volunteers from the US and Europe prepared to travel to the area to help set up the equipment.

I have been asked specifically to help rebuild communications from people in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and an island near the epicenter without any telecom connection to nearby Sumatra.

We are now working in coordination with the efforts of the Wireless Comm Association International, and I will be attending the Jan. 13th disaster relief meeting in san jose. Other wireless activists and group leaders have contacted me about working together, which I am thrilled to do. I am in touch with companies that want to help, but are working with us to determine what specific models we could put in use.

Bloggers without Borders has pledged 10% of current donations will go to socalwug for this effort.

Donations can be made to socalwug via paypal (through my account at mo@transstellar.com) or credit card. Equipment can be sent to me to redistribute or may ship directly from the manufacturer to the site if practical (as in SmartBridges case from Singapore.)

The European Library (TEL) Project Update

http://www.europeanlibrary.org/

The European Library (TEL) project is a new pan-European service which ultimately will provide Internet access to the combined resources of the national libraries of Europe. Begun in January after 36 months of study, the project hopes to launch TEL by the end of this year. It will offer free searching for both digital and non-digital resources, and will deliver digital objects -- some free, some for a fee. There will be limited multilingual features at launch; although the partners are committed to multilingual interfaces with links to translation services, there will be no integrated multilingual search capability. TEL will integrate with Gabriel, the Web service for 43 European national libraries. Aimed at informed citizens worldwide who want a powerful, simple way of finding European cultural resources, TEL's vast virtual collection of material is also expected to attract researchers from around the world. The European Library will be a "collection of collections" and allow for cross-collection searching which would otherwise be impossible. TEL will contribute to new research by making resources from many disciplines widely available, and by enabling new connections through exploitation of a huge virtual library collection. The TEL team will be established this month and start to transfer the project results into an operational service.

Project Gotham Racing 2 fans will soon have some new cars to park in their garage. A forum post on the Web site of Bizarre Creations, the game's developer, revealed today that a second "booster pack" for the game will be available for download soon on Xbox Live. According to the post, the pack will feature eight tracks inside the new city of Long Beach, California. "Middle-of-the-road dividers, abrupt elevation changes, long sweeping straights and kudos-generating hairpins turn this into one of the most varied, rewarding and challenging cities in the PGR series," read the post which mentioned Long Beach landmarks such as the Convention Center, the Westin, and the famously sun-bathed Ocean Drive.
