Press Club Keeps Gannon--But Adds Others
to Panel (Editor and Publisher)
03/29/2005 07:58 PMEditor and Publisher - NEW YORK Despite criticism in some media
circles, the National Press Club is standing by its decision to
feature James Guckert -- a.k.a. Jeff Gannon, the former
correspondent/escort -- on an April 8 panel discussion about
journalism and blogging called "Who is a Journalist?" But it has added
others to the panel.

06/20/2004 08:55 PMAP - The chairman of the Sept. 11 commission said Sunday that al-Qaida
had much more interaction with Iran and Pakistan than it did with

insistence there was collaboration between the terrorist organization
and Saddam Hussein.

Guess-who addresses the National Press

Guess-who addresses the National Press
Club?
01/22/2004 04:31 AMOn Sunday, I came in at the middle of a talk being aired by the local
NPR station. Someone was outlining what sounded like a progressive
approach to Voice Over IP and to telecommunications in general. Oh,
there were so worrisome phrases — for example, freeing up more
unlicensed spectrum but not addressing the broader licensing concerns
— but my grasp of the issues is weak enough that I figured I was
just getting them wrong. Turns out it was Michael Powell, chair of the
FCC, addressing the National Press Club. Well, I'll be. (I'd trust
people like David Isenberg,...

Club panel April 19
04/14/2005 03:48 PMDavid Pescovitz:
I'm honored to have been invited to participate in a panel organized
by the Silicon Valley Commonwealth Club called "Joining the
Blogosphere" next Tuesday, April 19. The other panelists include
Dan Gillmor and
Jude Barry.
David Satterfield, managing editor of
the San Jose Mercury News, will moderate, and
Chuck Olsen,
producer of the film
Blogumentary, is the special
guest. The free program begins at 7pm. If you're in San Jose, please
stop by and say hello! From the flyer:
The current question in the Blogosphere is whether or not
bloggers are journalists and if so, do they deserve the same rights as
professional journalists? The civil rights group Electronic Frontier
Foundation feels that being able to ensure sources’
confidentiality is critical to any journalist’s ability to
acquire information and that includes bloggers. Are blogs a valid
grassroots form of journalism? Or is there too much chance for
inaccuracy and not enough fact-checking. Join us as we venture into
this new land. At the start of our program we will view excerpts from
recently released films – including Blogumentary and television
programs related to how we get our news.

Powell forces press aide to let him
answer Meet the Press question
05/17/2004 06:11 AMColin Powell appeared on Meet the Press this weekend, and his
appearance was marred by his press secretary moving the camera and
attempting to end the interview early when Russert, the interviewer,
started to ask a hardball question about the fictional Nigerian
yellow-cake uranium that Powell used as an excuse to go to war in
Iraq.
Most noteworthy about this event was that Powell, rebuked the
press-secretary on air, demanded that the camera be trained on him
again, and then answered the question, describing the intelligence
he'd received as "deliberately misleading."
Lisa Rein's got the video up -- highly recommended.
EMILY MILLER, STATE DEPARTMENT PRESS AIDE: You're off.
SECRETARY POWELL: I am not off.
EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: No. They can't use it, they're editing it.
SECRETARY POWELL: He's still asking the questions.
EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: He was not ...
SECRETARY POWELL: Tim, I am sorry I lost you.
MR. RUSSERT: I am right here Mr. Secretary. I would hope they would
put you back on camera. I don't know who did that.
EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: He was going to go for another five
minutes.
SECRETARY POWELL: We've really scre...
MR. RUSSERT: I think that was one of your staff Mr. Secretary. I
don't think that's appropriate.
SECRETARY POWELL: Emily, get out of the way. Bring the camera back
please. (Camera returns to the interview subject) I think we're back
on Tim, go ahead with your last question.

03/17/2005 03:55 AMXeni Jardin:

Following up on last week's post about the Sri Lankan sensation who
plays bongo with her lingo, Boing
Boing reader Pablos says: "
M.I.A.
was scheduled to perform at Chop Suey in Seattle tonight. Apparently
she is having some kind of Visa trouble and her show has been
cancelled. "
Some speculate the incident may relate to her father's affiliation
with a Sri Lankan rebel group designated as a terrorist organization
by the US. No news on her site or newsfeeds yet, but she's also
scheduled to play at SXSW this
week.
See also this extensive Pitchfork interview with Ms. Maya

The Kos Controversy
The Kos Controversy
04/09/2004 03:55 PMMarkos Moulitsas Zúniga, the webmaster of the Scoop-powered lefty blog
Daily Kos, recently made controversial comments regarding the four
Americans killed in Falluja. More precisely, he said "screw them."
He later posted a clarification of his comments, but stopped short of
an apology. So, Instapundit, Tacitus, and many other sites have
condemned the comment. Some advertisers have taken their ads off the
site, the Kerry campaign took down their link to Daily Kos, and people
have generally said "rabble rabble rabble." Tacitus and others have
even suggested that Daily Kos should no longer raise money for the
Democrats.

Check Your Visa Transactions On The Card
Itself
04/29/2004 05:04 AM
Smart credit cards with built in chips never really took off in the US
as was expected, but Visa is apparently experimenting with an even
smarter credit card. They're testing cards that actually contain a tiny display screen on
the card itself. The idea is that you could check your balance or
your recent transactions directly on the card itself. The screen runs
off of the smart card chip that no one was using before. Right now,
they say the display-in-cards are a bit too fragile, but they expect
to figure out how to make them more durable by next year. Of course,
the other problem is that such tiny, flexible, durable displays built
onto a credit card are going to be quite expensive. There are also
some concerns about what data to show, and how to keep any sensitive
data private. Perhaps this could work with the voice
activated credit card everyone was talking about last week -
though, you have to imagine that's only going to make the price go
higher. Of course, as various wireless companies are working on ways
to build payment
technologies directly into the mobile phone, some may wonder why
they need an actual credit card (smart or not) at all.
