07/07/2004 09:40 AMSOFTLY SPOKEN, shy and retiring Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer sent an
email to staff yesterday to complain that the company is not as
wealthy as everyone thinks. According to Mr Ballmer, stories have been
getting out that he is sitting on a fathomless cash ocean of billions
of dollars and does nothing more than swim in the mountains of loot.
He wanted to tell staff that it is not true because Microsoft needed a
lot of cash.

ActiveWin.com Book of the Day: Bad Boy
Ballmer: The Man Who Rules Microsoft
11/05/2003 11:37 PMIn this revealing biography -- based on in-depth study and interviews
with Microsoft insiders -- Fredric Alan Maxwell provides the complete,
controversial narrative of one of the technology industry's most
influential, talked-about figures: Steven Anthony Ballmer, the awkward
Detroit Country Day School valedictorian who rose to become
Microsoft's president, and in the past two years, its CEO. Together
with Bill Gates, Ballmer leads the company he and Gates took from less
than 30 employees to some 50,000, and annual revenues from $12 million
to more than $20 billion and rising. A balanced portrait, this book
reveals the good boy Ballmer -- the dedicated son who once took three
months off to care for his ailing parents, and the bad boy Ballmer --
the ruthless businessman who at the same time devised and led a
scorched earth policy against other software developers, a policy that
earned him the nickname "The Em-balmer."

on the mobile phone business. The prize: a chunk of the emerging

technology sector's next big things. But rather than embrace Windows,
as PC makers did, handset makers have tried to lock out Microsoft.

07/07/2004 01:17 AMMicrosoft Corp. needs to avoid the "'big company' ills" if it wants to
beat competitors and boost its long-stagnant stock price, Chief
Executive Steve Ballmer told employees in an annual memo Tuesday.
In the memo, which traditionally lays out the company's goals for its
fiscal year that began July 1, Ballmer wrote that avoiding the
pitfalls of corporate size involves more than just building new,
innovative products. The software titan also must make sure it isn't
losing touch with - or the faith of - its current customers.
