AT&T Wireless Accused Of Hurricane Price
Gouging
09/13/2004 05:19 AMAs Florida braces for its third major hurricane in about a month,
mobile phone carriers are, once again, ready to do whatever it takes
to help residents... or, possibly, to rip them off. When the last
hurricane hit, both
Cingular
and
Sprint
were quick to offer free calling stations to local residents who
needed to call family and friends to let them know they were okay.
T-Mobile made news by
giving away free WiFi. All three
seemed like good moves for a state ripped to shreds by hurricanes.
However, on the other side, doing little to improve their somewhat
dreadful reputation these days, AT&T Wireless is being accused of
using the opportunity to do a little price
gouging, by jacking up their per-minute and connection fees. The
details suggest that it wasn't so much AT&T Wireless, but, rather the
failure of AT&T Wireless' network along with those of some roaming
partners, such that the calls went over the networks of some third
party providers at somewhat ridiculous price levels. AT&T Wireless
claims they'll refund the extra cash on the next bill, but it still
looks bad that this happened at all.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PMBack in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to
differe
ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were
focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted
to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this
was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed
of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed
- and many people want it more for the always on connection than the
speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study
shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US,
many
more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower
price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is
good enough for what most people want to do with their connections
now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get
that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can
currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people
would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is
cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many
subscribers as well.

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
06/03/2004 03:44 AMThe meat of the article is:
“…Wireless security recommendations: Change your system
defaults – everyone knows them.
Change the Admin and SNMP passwords. Change the IP network range. Also
change the Server Set ID (SSID). The SSID is a unique identifier for
your wireless hub/router. The default SSID is set in the factory is
definitely not unique.
Don’t broadcast the SSID. While you can change the default ID,
that does little if your hub or router broadcasts that SSID.
Enable Wireless Encryption. WEP or something similar can be
compromised, but it makes it significantly more difficult to
compromise your information. The larger the key length, the better.
Enable Shared Key Authentication. The default Open System setting lets
anyone connect to your network with very minimal effort.
Change your SNMP Community String. Create a Community String like it
is a strong password.
Enable MAC Address Codes. Again, this makes it more difficult for a
hacker to compromise your home network.
Set Wireless LAN cards to Infrastructure Mode. Most cards have the
default Ad Hoc mode, which is less secure.
Don’t rely only on the broadband firewall. A firewall at your
home’s Internet entry point is critical. However, you should
still have personal firewalls on all computers on your network, in
case something makes it through your home’s firewall or a hacker
does make it onto your network.”
