PageWise offers tips and little essays in simple language: Organize your work desk and files, Care for someone with Alzheimer's, Reduce holiday stress, Parenting advice that really works(!), Fix cooking mistakes, The basics of clothing stain removal. It's a cheap shot, but I particularly liked "Help you child in improving their writing skills". But why wouldn't they build in a search feature? I had to google to find again the article on restraining the elderly. (And what's the deal with the similar WebGuru?).

In Search of Business Value: IT Really
Does Matter

Q&A: In a new book, Microsoft VP Robert McDowell takes on the "does IT matter?" debate, contending that IT delivers real value when it serves as a catalyst for rethinking business processes.

In May 2003, business writer Nicholas Carr sparked a heated debate when the Harvard Business Review published his article "IT Doesn't Matter." The premise of his article and a subsequent book "Does IT Matter?" is that business technology has become a commodity that offers little or no competitive advantage.

Testing Tasers on swine

Testing Tasers on swine 03/29/2005 03:08 PM
David Pescovitz: A researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is launching a study where he'll zap pigs with stun guns. Bioengineer John Webster is testing his hypothesis that the 50,000 volt shock by itself may not be as deadly as critics claim. From the Associated Press:
Webster suggested some of the Taser-related deaths were from a rare condition known as malignant hyperthermia, in which bodies essentially overheat. He will test that theory on swine that have been specially bred to have the condition.

Other suspects may have died if potassium that is released into the blood stream after muscle contractions caused by a Taser shock reached the heart, Webster said. Cocaine use might be another factor, he said...

While all the pigs will be filled with anesthesia, they will be euthanized after the experiments, said Webster, who predicted about 30 pigs would be used. The research could create a computer model that would eliminate the need for more animal testing, he said.

Darren sez, "Watch a family of wild boars, live with video and audio 24-hours a day. I watched and listened for a few minutes tonight, which is tomorrow morning in German boar time. I didn't see any pigs, but I did hear them. The audio is fantastic--very atmospheric. You can hear them scuffling around and snorting in the dirt. Over the past two weeks, apparently this site in Germany was become something of a phenomenon, registering 1.5 million visitors." Link (Thanks, Darren!)

One of our products at Google has updated today: Blogger. The news that will cover Blogger's update may not include "accelerated pearl farming and culturing" - but I'd like to think it could. What?...that's silly. Yeah, of course, but I can explain: Divers searching for marine pearls have had to overcome habitat dangers to farm a random distribution of oysters and manual ...

While used car part websites have existed for many years, none have had the technology to provide consumers with immediate results. To solve this problem, Hotlines, Inc. spent years creating its own cutting edge satellite technology that searches the inventory of top-quality salvage yards across the country with the click of a button. Thanks to Michael Geist for alerting me to this: There's an extraordinary decision (unanimous) by the Canadian Supreme Court that all looking for balance in this "war" should read: LSUC v. CCH. As Michael summarizes it: "the court now appears to be considering all copyright law interpretation through the lens of balancing user rights with creators rights."

The World Expo 2005 opened doors to visitors today. Attractions include robo ts, a mammoth, and participating countries from Australia to Zimbabwe. Some think that in the age of the Internet and intercontinental travel, world expos are becoming o bsolete; others think the Aichi Expo might spawn a new industry: industrial tourism. The last Expo in Japan was held in Osaka in 1970, and brought us arguably the world's ugliest artifact.

Fighting Conventional Wisdom

Fighting Conventional Wisdom 08/17/2004 11:05 AM
Why 2004 won't be like 1984. A phenomenal read detailing why Apple's reluctance to open up iPod is not the harbinger of doom that so many pundits claim it is. The horror! Apple may have learned from its mistakes with Macintosh 20 years ago and guess what? Macintosh's failure had little to do with licensing. That is, if you agree with the analysis over at daringfireball.net. This article points out why the media pundits are wrong about Apple's reluctance to open up iPod and shows why their position today is entirely different, and stronger, than 20 years ago. Let the flame wars begin!

Via Visa. But I will shorten it, and only answer a single question. The only question I care for anymore.

If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?
I would take one certain person, and give her the love she seeks, because it is what she deserves. But which was not mine to give.

I don't want to hurt anyone else ever again.

Please excuse my low bitrate for now. Too much to think.

I went to see Rod O'Connor, CEO of the convention. And I asked him a lot of "why" questions. (Including why he's called CEO.) He has a coherent story. That doesn't mean wholly convincing, only that it holds together what's happening this week in the Fleet Center. His view of what political conventions are? Message delivery over multiple platforms, with television yet the biggest deliverer. But that too is a convention-- of thought. It can change.
