North Carolina has become the laboratory for what is technically,
economically and politically possible in regulating hog farms and the
waste they produce.
In Search of Business Value: IT Really Does Matter
In Search of Business Value: IT Really Does Matter12/29/2004 11:54 AM Q&A: In a new book, Microsoft VP Robert McDowell takes on the "does IT
matter?" debate, contending that IT delivers real value when it serves
as a catalyst for rethinking business processes.
In May 2003,
business writer Nicholas Carr sparked a heated debate when the Harvard
Business Review published his article "IT Doesn't Matter." The premise
of his article and a subsequent book "Does IT Matter?" is that
business technology has become a commodity that offers little or no
competitive advantage.

Testing Tasers on swine03/29/2005 03:08 PM David Pescovitz:
A researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is launching a
study where he'll zap pigs with stun guns. Bioengineer John Webster is
testing his hypothesis that the 50,000 volt shock by itself may not be
as deadly as critics claim. From the Associated Press:
Webster suggested some of the Taser-related deaths were
from a rare condition known as malignant hyperthermia, in which bodies
essentially overheat. He will test that theory on swine that have been
specially bred to have the condition.
Other suspects may have died if potassium that is released into the
blood stream after muscle contractions caused by a Taser shock reached
the heart, Webster said. Cocaine use might be another factor, he
said...
While all the pigs will be filled with anesthesia, they will be
euthanized after the experiments, said Webster, who predicted about 30
pigs would be used. The research could create a computer model that
would eliminate the need for more animal testing, he
said.
Pig Brother: swine voyeurism04/15/2004 05:02 PM Darren sez, "Watch a family of wild boars, live with video and audio
24-hours a day. I watched and listened for a few minutes tonight,
which is tomorrow morning in German boar time. I didn't see any pigs,
but I did hear them. The audio is fantastic--very atmospheric. You can
hear them scuffling around and snorting in the dirt. Over the past two
weeks, apparently this site in Germany was become something of a
phenomenon, registering 1.5 million visitors."

A Garden of Pearls
A Garden of Pearls05/10/2004 10:01 PM
One of our products at Google has updated today: Blogger.
The news that will cover Blogger's update may not include "accelerated
pearl farming and culturing" - but I'd like to think it could.
What?...that's silly. Yeah, of course, but I can explain: Divers
searching for marine pearls have had to overcome habitat dangers to
farm a random distribution of oysters and manual ...

just annoying. Clay Shirky's latest post, 'Is Social Software bad for
the Dean Campaign' comes just as I'm writing a considerably similar
analysis for some interested people....

wisdom from the north03/06/2004 01:51 AM Thanks to Michael Geist for alerting me to this: There's an
extraordinary decision (unanimous) by the Canadian Supreme Court that
all looking for balance in this "war" should read: LSUC v. CCH. As Michael summarizes it: "the court now
appears to be considering all copyright law interpretation through the
lens of balancing user rights with creators rights."

Infinite sadness, little wisdom04/12/2004 02:16 PM Via Visa.
But I will shorten it, and only answer a single question. The only
question I care for anymore.
If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt
or politics, what would you do? I would take one certain person, and give her the love she seeks,
because it is what she deserves. But which was not mine to give.
I don't want to hurt anyone else ever again.
Please excuse my low bitrate for now. Too much to think.

Convention Wisdom From the CEO: Day Two With the Democrats07/28/2004 09:23 AM I went to see Rod O'Connor, CEO of the convention. And I asked him a
lot of "why" questions. (Including why he's called CEO.) He has a
coherent story. That doesn't mean wholly convincing, only that it
holds together what's happening this week in the Fleet Center. His
view of what political conventions are? Message delivery over
multiple platforms, with television yet the biggest deliverer. But
that too is a convention-- of thought. It can change.

Today's received wisdom about tomorrow
Today's received wisdom about tomorrow05/07/2004 04:23 PM Strange Horizons magazine has published a list of the story cliches
it's seeing too much of in its submissions-pile. This is a pretty good
benchmark for the today's received-wisdom zeitgeist about tomorrow.
1. Someone calls technical support for a magical item.
2. Someone calls technical support for a piece of advanced
technology.
3. The title of the story is 1-800-SOMETHING-CUTE.
