Forgetful President Critiques Candidate's Inexperience

Forgetful President Critiques
Candidate's Inexperience
07/07/2004 01:03 PM

  • Reuters: Bush Raises Issue of Edwards' Experience to Be VP. President Bush criticized Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards in his own home state on Wednesday by questioning whether Edwards has sufficient experience to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.
  • Given that Bush had no more experience when he became president (not vice president), this is almost funny. He gets two points for hypocrisy, though.

    Apple critiques

    Apple critiques 09/01/2004 06:14 AM

Microsoft gets something of a raw deal from the blogosphere, they're considered fair game for ridicule, when few other companies are. This should change, and I'm glad to see it is. Russ Beattie, for example, had a succinct, practical and negative review of Apple's new desktop computer. Bravo!

And when Adam Curry calls the iPod a platform, he's overlooking one important thing that users and developers like to see in a platform: choice of vendor. It's laughable to think that iTunes will ever work with another vendor's hardware, it's not very likely to happen, in our lifetimes, even if we live to a ripe old age. I literally did laugh when I considered the idea. That's not the way Apple works.

Postscript: Of course then I immediately realized that HP is making an iPod, just to confuse matters. Oy. There goes my theory. Does the hPod work with iTunes?

    Boingo CEO Critiques Cometa

Boingo CEO Critiques Cometa 05/18/2004 06:18 PM
Boingo Wireless CEO issues statement critiquing Cometa Networks' failures: In a rare case of this sort, Sky Dayton, Boingo's founder and CEO, issued a brief statement reiterating the overall growth in revenue and use of public Wi-Fi hotspots, and critiquing Cometa's missteps. The statement notes, "Cometa had the potential to become a leading wholesale hot spot provider. The company's business plan made a lot of sense -- build lots of hot spots on the cheap and wholesale them to brands who shoulder the costs of marketing, support and billing. But they didn't execute well. They spent too much money before they needed to and demanded carriers pay high minimums for access to a network that wasn't yet built. No carrier wanted to go along with that." Dayton also noted that despite Boingo's ability to sign up networks worldwide as part of their roaming and aggregation system, that Cometa wouldn't work with them. Cometa signed a roaming deal with iPass, but reports indicate that this was more theory than an implemented reality. Dayton wrote, "Boingo had attempted to strike a roaming agreement with Cometa, but they claimed to not be interested. Even though their network wasn't much more than a promise, they were acting as if they were already the market leader. They succeeded in alienating the very people they needed to help them succeed." We've heard now from other sources that Dayton's experience was consistent with Cometa's approach to other firms....

washingtonpost.com - Today's report by the commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks will roam far beyond the hijacking plot and the government's failure to detect it, touching on issues including weapons-proliferation policies and the United States' treatment of detainees captured in the war on terrorism.

A review of the oh-so-48-hours-ago PHST (Paris Hilton Sex Tape), on "Noted Film Critic and Swede" Bergmann Endresson's blog. What's next, a tete-a-tete with James Lipton? A three-way with Roger Ebert? A new cinematic school of doggy-style Dogme?
The cold black of night is penetrated by an alien tone, played upon an inhuman scale. It pierces through the quiet slumber that is the inheritance of honest men.

As when Psyche dripped her voyeur wax upon the forbidden face of love, a sprightly nymph stirs, and all is a flutter:

    "Let me get my phone."

Paris Hilton's first line in this magnificent post modern statement is more conditioned response than free will. Like Pavlov's doggy, she is powerless to resist the cold intrusion of the technological sprawl that devours countrysides, bathrooms and budoirs with the same unyielding hunger. McLuhan promised us a Global Village, but nowhere did he say that it would be a tax haven, and on this evening the throbbing circuitry of a connected world demands the sacrifice of a media virgin. But she is not without an advisor. In this film Ms. Hilton acts opposite Rick Solomon, media mogul, giver of corporal knowledge. Yet he is more, and in a poignant moment of self-loathing which defines the entire encounter, Solomon blasphemes the very technology upon which he has built his empire:

    "Fuck your phone."

Jody Radzik's new bl0g critiques gurus
    of all spiritual stripes
    03/19/2005 03:02 AM
David Pescovitz: For more than a decade, my friend Jody Radzik has dropped countless spiritual mindbombs on me. In fact, he's probably the only person that holds my interest in such matters. He has a wonderfully-open mind, but he's certainly no sucker. Jody's an intrepid explorer, always ready to dig into a belief system but never afraid to knock a guru off his or her throne with a brilliant and witty observation. In fact, his new blog--guruphiliac--is about just that. This week's posts include the likes of subway-gassing Aum Shinrikyo guru Shoko Asahara's prison proclivity to "wearing diapers and mumbling incomprehensibly" and news of Hindus pissed off at a Ford commercial where Shiva discusses how owning the car is good Karma. From the guruphiliac mission statement:
"While we understand that gurus are held sacred by many, they are also public figures deserving of scrutiny. Our primary aim is to inject a little humor into what can be an excessively self-righteous enterprise, and to illustrate the primary truth that no matter how divine their devotees believe them to be, gurus poop on the same pot we do."

    The new president of MIT

The new president of MIT 08/27/2004 01:40 PM

An Associated Press story about MIT's president, Susan Hockfield, devotes a lot of space to her sex and the sex ratio among MIT faculty members.  What is more interesting to me is Hockfield's background as a life scientist.  Her last research and teaching position was at Yale Medical School.  She is not an engineer.  She was never a computer programmer.  MIT's current president, Chuck Vest, was a mechanical engineer.  His predecessor, Paul Gray, was an electrical engineer.  His predecessor, Jerry Wiesner, was an electrical engineer.  (See http://libraries.mit.edu/archives/mithistory/histories-offic es/pres.html for more detail.)

Hockfield has a good opportunity to realign MIT with the national mood.  Harvard University, for example, nearly a century ago was host to the world's #1 department of civil engineering.  The president of Harvard at the time looked around and decided that civil engineering wasn't going to be important to the United States.  He shut down the department and fired all the faculty members, including those with tenure.  There are plenty of things that folks at MIT do that (a) attract reasonable research funding, (b) are among the best projects of their kind worldwide, and (c) are things that nobody cares about anymore or that are done just as well by Industry.

After she has cleared out some space on campus what new initiatives might she push?  How about a medical school?  MIT has one of the world's best biology departments but, except for some ties to Harvard Medical School, very little in the practical side of medicine.MIT could probably do better work in biology if there were medical colleagues close at hand with whom to collaborate.  MIT's engineering research would take on new relevance if it were tied to patient care.

Starting a medical school will be a huge challenge, of course.  Despite the growth in the U.S. population the American Medical Association has generally opposed new med schools due to the fact that more doctors might lead to lower average salaries.  But if there is to be a new medical school in the United States where better than at MIT, where a random door in the bio department might very well open into the office of a winner of the Nobel prize for "physiology or medicine"?

Bea Arthur for President 08/28/2004 11:36 AM
Bea Arthur sparked a security scare at Logan Airport in Boston this week when she tried to board a Cape Air flight with a pocketknife in her handbag. The "Golden Girls" star, now 81, was flagged by a Transportation Security Administration agent, who discovered the knife - a strict no-no following 9/11. "She started yelling that it wasn't hers and said 'The terrorists put it there,' " a fellow passenger said. "She kept yelling about the 'terrorists, the terrorists, the terrorists.' " After the blade was confiscated, Arthur took a keyring from her bag and told the agent it belonged to the "terrorists," before throwing it at them. - via philly.com
