Nokia's Control of Symbian Blocked 07/07/2004 11:33 AM

symbian_top-logo.gif imageAnd while we're on the subject of Symbian, Reuters has confirmed that a shares redistribution and rights issue will rearrange the corporate control of Symbian, keeping Nokia's stake in the company under the controlling 50 percent. So yeah, that's boring, but probably good -- it means that Symbian won't become a Nokia-only company, and the other participants, like founder Psion, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Samsung, and Matsushita will get their fair share of attention. It also means Psion is about 92 million dollars richer, money they plan to use to expand their staff.

Nokia's Deadly Phones

Nokia's Deadly Phones 07/20/2004 11:05 AM

nokia-chilling_small.jpg imageBREAKING FAKE NEWS: Gizmodo has gained access to a confidential letter from Nokia's Chief Executive Officer detailing how, in some cases (particularly if the user is especially gullible or easy suggestible), Nokia phones can release a burst of electromagnetic energy, causing heart failure, brain hemorrhaging, and in some cases Instant Death Syndrome. In the letter, CEO Jorma Ollila makes it clear that the problem is well know, and the "loss of life is an acceptable risk we must face in order to sell our products."

In a related note, I have gained the ability to make genitalia disappear using naught but the power of my mind. You'll know it's the truth because details of my powers have been printed on Gawker letterhead. (Thanks, Bob Pease!)

Nokia's new 6230 cellphone 11/03/2003 12:18 PM
MobileBurn takes a closer look the 6230, one of those new cellphones Nokia announced last week. Weighing in at 97 grams and just 20mm thick, the 6230 is plenty small considering all the features it has: an integrated VGA quality digital camera which can record video clips, a 65,000 color display, Bluetooth, and an MMC expansion card slot. Nokia's 3220 Airtexter

Nokia's 3220 Airtexter 06/01/2004 07:25 AM

nokia_3220.jpg imageNokia's new 3220 is a nice enough tri-band phone, with integrated VGA camera and all the standard stuff, but besides looking like the bottom of a shoe, it's most known for its optional Xpress-on funshell which adds 'airtexting' using a persistence of vision LED array (as seen in Phillip Torrone's POV shoes or any number of Burning Man art projects). By waving the phone back and forth through the air, users can display short messages that appear to be much larger than the phone itself and look something like those LED signs that tell you how long you have to wait in queue at the DMV. It's a fun concept, but somewhat hard to explain to those that haven't seen it, and it brings up some interesting concepts when it comes to heckling. With the ability to quickly generate an LED sign with an message on it, will airtexting be the next thing that causes cellphones to be banned from public places?

Small changes can thwart WLAN hackers 07/02/2004 01:05 PM
“With common sense and a basic understanding of how wireless security works, an enterprise can keep its wireless LAN protected from intruders using the security standards and practices available today. During ‘Wireless Hacking Exposed,’ a session hosted by the Rolling Meadows, Ill.-based Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), Steve Rampado, a senior manager of enterprise risk services for Deloitte and Touche LLP, said a wireless network can become far more secure simply by implementing a few minor changes when establishing the network.”
