JiWire Launches Wi-Fi Discussion Boards
06/05/2005 10:56 PM JiWire's discussion forums should be a lively place to ask questions:
JiWire's new KnowldegeSpot forums, currently in beta, should be a
great place to learn more about Wi-Fi. I've been frustrated in finding
and building forums in the past because you have to have thousands of
interested people who regularly read and post to build a rich
knowledge base. JiWire has that kind of traffic--and I hope that Wi-Fi
Networking News readers check out the forums as well. I'll be
answering questions there as I have time....

Boom! Forget terror attacks, the real reason for an orange
alert in NYC has to do with ... rocks. I'll bet you've never heard of
Cumbr

know it's obscure.
(It's a volcano in the Canaries). If it erupts, it'll
spell the end for Washington, New York and Boston (and parts of Europe
will get a bit wet.) Hoo!
Now, short of hoping it will go
away, there's nothing you can do, because it will take
35 million
years to dismantle the dangerous bits of rock. Instead, the

Places Online
01/25/2004 04:14 PMPlaces Onlinehttp://www.placesonline.orgThe Association of American Geographers has gathered an array
of websites that depict environments, people and life around the
world. There is a high standard for inclusion in the site: the sites
must be image and content heavy, and must be "primary" sites, as
opposed to sites that only direct users to a list of links. Places
Online is searchable, and also can be navigated by using an
interactive map; the first level is by region/continent and the second
level is broken down into countries and cities. Most sites are native
to the region that is being explored, thereby giving a local flavor
and perspective on the locales, events and experiences displayed.

07/04/2004 07:04 AMThe Metasearch Initiative: Looking for Data in All the Right
Placeshttp://snipurl.com/7ig2 Whether you call it metasearch, federated search or broadcast
search, the idea of exploring multiple resources using a single
interface has long been the pipe dream of libraries. Unfortunately,
most of the disparate data resources patrons want to search serve
their data in many different ways, or not at all. While Google and the
like search anything, the challenge for the library profession is to
create ways to search well in all the right places. At the 2003 ALA
Midwinter Meeting, three vendors -- EBSCO, Gale and ProQuest -- met to
discuss the problem. Led by the National Information Standards
Organization, workshop meetings were held and the Metasearch
Initiative was formed. With a mix of librarians, publishers and
library-software providers, the Metasearch Initiative has drawn the
participation of more than 60 individuals from five countries. Even
large publishers who have already developed proprietary XML gateways
are involved. The Metasearch Initiative intends to identify, develop,
and frame the standards and other common understandings needed to
enable an efficient and robust information environment. The Metasearch
Initiative's goals are to enable service providers to offer more
effective and responsive services, help content providers deliver
enhanced content while protecting their intellectual property, and
enable libraries to deliver services that distinguish their offerings
from Google and other free Web search services.

Resellers
NetNearU Fosters Roaming Among Its
Resellers
06/03/2004 05:18 PMTurnkey hotspot system operator allows its resellers to roam freely if
they wish: NetNearU is one of several companies that provides turnkey
hotspot equipment to single venues or resellers who then equip
locations. The network has always allowed roaming with a single login
across its entire network for existing users, but settles fees set by
each network based on usage. Now, NetNearU is allowing resellers who
want to offer free roaming to do so by signing a revised agreement. In
an interview Wednesday with Wi-Fi Networking News, NetNearU's director
of marketing David Comer said in this new model, "End users
don’t ever have to work about being charged." So far, five
reseller networks have signed up, including Cafe.com in Los Angeles,
CEDX in the New York metropolitan area, providers in Seattle, Chicago,
and Israel. The initiative was spearheaded by Cafe.com's Ronan
Higgins. Comer said, "He really came up with some good business points
as to why--as he calls them--the middle-tier operators should provide
free roaming to their users to go wherever they can." Craig Plunkett,
CEDX's managing principal, said in an interview, "It gives us the same
bilateral roaming that FatPort and Surf and Sip put together."
Plunkett noted that previously, a roaming customer would take revenue
from his network and settle it on the destination network. With the
new agreement, "If that guy is a monthly customer of mine, I
don’t have to worry about paying Ronan [of Cafe.com] the entire
revenue stream for the month." Currently, NetNearU resellers have to
opt in or out of the agreement, and Comer said that the company is
about to start actively marketing the idea to its wider groups of
customers. For "each licensee or network operator, it’s their
own business to run," Comer said. "It really helps the smaller
licensees to a certain extent to compete against Boingo, or to have
some kind of added value or added attractiveness. Because it just
makes you as a smaller guy appear larger," Comer said. NetNearU
resells service on a per-session basis to Boingo, iPass, and GRIC.
Comer noted that customers of a given network would be able to see
which locations they could roam freely onto through a link on the
login screen which NetNearU dynamically updates as revised contracts
are received....
