Canon has released an updated PowerShot, bumping the
A70 to the new A85, a 4-megapixel/3x optical zoom sidearm that also
adds PictBridge comparability (for easy one-button transfer direct
from camera to printer or portable hard drive). The A85 also ships
with a 32MB Compact Flash card, which is a nice step up from the usual
16MB card most cameras are bundled with. It's about time we start
seeing even low-end cameras with 32- or even 64-meg flash memory cards
right out of the box.
Also, coffee at 5PM can not be mitigated with bourbon at 11PM. Good

"Japan's three major mobile phone carriers KDDI, Vodafone and NTT
DoCoMo have all flagged new models boasting about 2 megapixels. This
article states that 'the designs offer more than merely a few more
pixels, though. Models of KDDI and Vodafone also come with auto-focus
(AF) mechanisms, for example. Some camera-equipped mobile phones are
featuring the equivalent electronic flash found in digital still
cameras'. With the capacity of two megapixels and flash, 'photography
with mobile phones will make major inroads into digital camera

I have to say, I'm as
dubious about this $300 VuPoint 6-megapixel camera as Red is over at
The Red Ferret Journal, but it's just expensive enough that it
could actually offer decent image quality and a small housing,
although it doesn't look like it has any optical zoom, which would
just about kill it for me. As soon as I see any reviews -- with sample
images -- I'll let you know.

09/16/2004 05:52 AM
Nikon has finally announced the successor to their
D1X and boy, does it look hot! Called the D2X (surprise!), the
defining feature of the new DSLR is a 12.4-megapixel CMOS sensor that
can shoot up to five frames per second at its highest resolution, but
can also be bumped down to 6.8-megapixel to increase its framerate to
8 per second. In addition, Nikon has updated their Wi-Fi transmitter
for the camera; the WT-2 has both 802.11b/g support and "Capture
Control," giving you the ability to control the shutter of the camera
from a PC or other mobile device.

LG Electronics is
providing a pair of 3.24-megapixel camera phones to SK Telecom (the
LG-SD350) and KTF (the LG-KP2500) which use a mechanical shutter
instead of a software technique to improve image quality. Also
interesting is the fact that the handsets are clamshells, instead of
candy bar phones -- the last 3-megapixel phone we saw, the Samsung
SPH-2300, has a more traditional camera shape, although it has an
optical zoom, as well. I would hazard a guess that the new LG phones
do not (although these days, it's hard to tell).
Meanwhile, some of the phones in the US are starting to get
1-megapixel sensors. Wowsers!

06/15/2004 06:54 AMRemember that 22-megapixel Sinar camera back from yesterday? Reader
Jason Ozolins explains what makes peltier cooling on large CCDs so
useful:
I think you'll find that the Peltier cooler on the
Sinar camera back is not used to dissipate lots of internally
generated heat (typical "leet overcloxor" use), but to keep the CCD
sensor cold, which increases the signal to noise ratio, and allows
them to get that incredible 14 usable bits of resolution per colour
component.
It's been done with CCDs since the 1980s by astronomers; back then,
making a 200Kpixel CCD was a hugely expensive proposition, so you
might as well spend a few thousand more cooling the thing to wring the
absolute most information possible out of its images.

Developed for Sinar by
Kodak, the new Sinarback 54 M is a new pro-level camera back that
captures with an impressive 22 megapixel sensor with 14-bit color
depth. I didn't realize high-end sensors generated a lot of heat
during operation, but apparently the Sinarback dumps enough that it
has an integrated Peltier cooler to enable it to be continuously used.
No idea on price; let's say 'spendy' for now. (Thanks,
Lorenz!)

return to early digicam form--14.5MB of internal memory. The Coolpix
4100 will also take SD cards for additional storage and should be
price around $300. One thing I love about Nikon is that they tend to
release their own underwater housings for their cameras and the 4100
will be getting one, as well. Even though many 3rd party housings are
just as good or better, it's usually a lot easier to buy from the
manufacturer.

The future is now. Unfortunately, the
future is now in Korea, a land filled with a fine people and such,
don't get me wrong, but a land that is also, clearly, not right
here in my apartment. So with Samsung's introduction of a new
3-megapixel cameraphone, the SPH-2300, we Westerners have all been
apparently flung backwards into the past, which is cool from a
"countdown to death" perspective, but otherwise, you know, I'd rather
just have my 3-megapixel cameraphone -- especially one with optical
zoom, miniSD slot, and built-in flash.

Sony's new DCR-PC350 MiniDV
Handycam jams a 3.31-megapixel CCD into a compact shell that weighs
less than a pound. Each unit comes with a Handycam Station, a charging
dock that connects to a TV or PC via S-Video, USB, or FireWire
(i.LINK), to copy over data or display images or video straight from
the camera. A 2.5-inch touchscreen LCD augments the rest of the
controls, and a Memory Stick PRO Duo slot allows for a quick toss-in
of additional storage (just for photos, not video, I would think).
Small, light, and high-quality -- no complaints here (although I
wouldn't mind a hard drive inside, too, if I'm free to wish).
Should be available in September for $1,300, "just in time for the
holidays." I had no idea Sony was so concerned about Rosh Hashanah.

Slashphone has information
about a new phone available on Korea's SKT Telecom, produced by
Pantech & Curite (?) and packed with features that we won't see
for a while yet. In addition to the 320 x 240 260K color screen, 63MB
of usable memory, and MiniSD, the Curitel S4 has a 2-megapixel camera
with a 2x optical zoom. Yes, it's painful, but what can we do?
Hopefully some of the phones with the 1.3-megapixel cameras will sell
well here in the US and encourage the carriers to bring over the
hotter cameraphones sooner (I wouldn't count on it, though).
