Today's addition to our Comic Book Cover Gallery is a special promotional comic that was given away at the 2000 San Diego Comic Con from Wizards of the Coast. "The Battle For Theed" by Michael Stackpole and Daniel Veesenneyer takes place during the events of The Phantom Menace and introduces several new characters like Rorworr and Sia-Lan (and also features a sneak cameo from a certain senator from Naboo.) The story sets the stage for the Invasion of Theed roleplaying game and has an all-new cover by Adam Hughes, who helped design the characters. While I've been searching for this book for my own collection for awhile now, I've added scans from the story to our gallery.

Today's Power of the Force 2 Photo Archives update features the a new section of the Episode I Sneak Preview toys. Before The Phantom Menace was released in theaters, fans got their first look into the Prequel Trilogy by way of a pair of action figures. Jedi Master Mace Windu was a mail-in exclusive, while the STAP with Battle Droid was sold at stores in special packaging. Although the two characters never met onscreen, fans anxiously awaited the release a new Star Wars movie.

Mike Outmesguine, tech guru and Southern Calilfornia Wireless Users Group cofounder, has a new book out called "Wi-Fi Toys." It's a compendium of hands-on projects involving "extreme wireless technology." There's great stuff in here. It's just broad enough to avoid intimidating non-geeks, but just geek enough so that the experiments will actually work. Mike says:

This book attempts to bring readers into the fray by teaching them, step-by-step, how to build fun, useful, and k001 projects using Wi-Fi. Thanks to Wiley Publishing, the entire first chapter is available for download as a non-DRM'd PDF file here. One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.
