am3 Sets Up Anime Vending Machines for
Game Boy Advance
07/07/2004 12:46 PM

am3_player.jpg imageJapanese company am3 has set up anime vending machines in 20 locations around the country in test program to sell content for its moderately succesful 'Advance Movie' peripheral for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance. Different from the Game Boy Advance Video cartridges available here, the Advance Movie uses a rewriteable Smart Media card, which consumers can fill up with movies that cost between 100 (~$1) and 400 yen(~$4), depending on their content (and presumably length). So far all the titles are anime, but there's nothing stopping other types of programs to be sold. In fact, am3 is already planning to sell data for four other peripherals it sells; Advance Comic, for manga viewing; Advance Picture, for images; Advance Music, for durrrrr; and Advance Navi, for maps.

Why they can't just have one peripheral that does all those things, I don't know. Oh, and if any of our Japanese readers can snap a pic of the vending machines and send it to us, that'd be dandy.

Thanks to Tyler and Mohammed and everybody else that sent in pictures of these am3 Anime Vending machines for the Advance Movie player. I'm fairly sure that eh one of the left (the Pokemon-branded one) is the newer model, while the one on the right is the older, less full-featured model that has been out for a while. I love that in an all-digital machine, they've somehow still found it necessary to incorporate a giant crank dial on the front.

McDonald's Ditches Giant Vending
Machines, Back To Dealing With Humans

McDonald's Ditches Giant Vending
Machines, Back To Dealing With Humans
11/13/2003 02:55 PM
Almost exactly a year ago we wrote about how giant vending machines were coming to the US. These were vending machines the size of small shops, that could pick from over 200 items to drop into your hand at your convenience - without having to deal with (gasp!) a human checkout person. It turns out that many of these machines were actually being run by McDonald's who has now decided that the US market just isn't ready for giant vending machines, which are being shut down. Perhaps there were complaints from teenaged kids who were scared that the vending machines were going to take away their only hope for a job.

Classic NES Game Boy Advance 06/07/2004 10:22 AM

gba_nes_sp.jpg imageOh lord, as if I didn't want it enough already, GadgetMadness bought one of those Limited Edition Classic NES Game Boy Advance SPs last night and took a bunch of smutty "I have it and you don't" pictures of the cute little bastard. I didn't realize the outside looked like the outside of an NES, too! I don't need another GBA -- this is what I keep telling myself while lingering lustfully over every picture.

Game Boy Advance overclockers

Game Boy Advance overclockers 04/26/2004 10:07 AM
These guys are overclocking the GameBoy Advance so that it can run fast enough to act as a SuperNES emulator:
When I saw loopy had released a SNES emulator I thought it was great! There were some limitations because of GBA processing speed, so we came up with a design to successfully overclock the GBA that is compatible with flash carts (so far - read on). We've already sent a prototype of our design for loopy to test with and he has had success with his Flash Advance Turbo 128, and we have successfully tested on our Flash2Advance 256. Unfortunately, though, it looks like different brands of Flash carts are reacting slightly differently to the Acceleration, so this is where we want to ask the community for their help. We want to test with all flash cart brands out there so we can finalize our design to be compatible with as many carts as possible.

campho02.jpg imageAlthough it was announced in September of last year, this "Campho Advance" module, as in 'Camera Phone,' for the Game Boy Advance is finally ready to hit the streets of Japan. It's not much more than a hack, with an 0.11-megapixel camera and only 5 frames per second sent over the phone line, but it will allow expensive, if fun videoconferencing using a regular old GameBoy (SP or plain Advance -- the image flips depending on how you put the cartridge in). Sadly, there's not much chance this $175 will grace our shores, but really, for the price, would you want it to?

03/21/2003 10:17 AM
Here's an advance review of the upcoming Wallace and Grommit game, which will be released to tie in with the 2005 movie.
The game begins from a premise that's arrant nonsense even for a licensed platformer -- an evil penguin, Feathers McGraw, has taken over the zoo that's imprisoned him and enslaved its inhabitants as part of his jewel-smuggling operation. Wallace and Gromit (mostly Gromit, who the player controls throughout the game) have to free 24 levels worth of imprisoned baby animals in order to free the zoo from the penguin's domination and return him to the appropriate occupation of a zoo penguin, slipping around on his belly and eating herring and guest-starring in Ed Norton's psychotic fantasies.

Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP Price Drop;
Maybe DS, Too
09/01/2004 08:04 AM

gba_nes_sp1.jpg imageGamesIndustry.Biz is reporting that Nintendo will drop the price of their Game Boy Advance SP to $80 in anticipation of the November launch of the upcoming Nintendo DS. (I wonder if that will include the remaining Special NES Edition models. Hrm.) Even more interesting is US retailer chatter that the DS may launch for $150 instead of $175, as Nintendo has previously stated. Unfortunately, while the SP price drop looks fairly certain, the DS drop might just be wishful thinking.

No word on European price cuts yet, but if the US gets a drop you can expect prices to (eventually) follow elsewhere.

st_george_gameboy.jpg imageI'm slightly surprised there isn't a Stars and Stripes version out first -- in fact, I feel slightly gipped, considering how we liberated the Japanese from the British threat back in WWII -- but it looks like the Brits will be getting their own St. George's flag on the Game Boy Advance, in a "90 quid" limited edition. Strangely, my pocket converter doesn't have "quid," so I'm thinking it probably costs around one million American dollars, or about the price of the bombs we had to use to flush out those tenacious British submarines that had infested the Mississippi in the '70s.

The St. George's Cross commemorates the reticle crosshair used by that camping bastard St. George of Manchester to snipe and kill General Harry S. Truman during the deathmatch that decided the Korean conflict. (Thanks, Martin!)

Let's see, a "programmable, upgradeable, automotive performance tool" that is controlled by plugging it into a Game Boy Advance. Hrm, no, don't know anyone interested in that. Which car, exactly, I'm not sure, as they weren't real talkative at the shop, nor do I know how much it will cost. I do know that it will come out this month, that's it's really neat, and they really need to be a little more willing to believe that they have something that people might be interested. (Thanks, Monackle!)

Gutting the Pocket Cinema Player for the

Gutting the Pocket Cinema Player for the
Game Boy Advance
11/17/2003 12:56 AM
Earlier this year a company called Pocket PC Films announced a plug-and-play cartridge for watching videos and listening to music on the Game Boy Advance. At the time they said it would use SD memory cards, which meant you could just transfer files from your PC and later watch them on your GBA, but now they're backtracking a bit about what you'll be able to do with the Pocket Cinema Player. They've ditched the SD card slot altogether, and instead the adapter, which is due out in May of next year, will use special 3-inch discs and a proprietary video format. This means that you won't be able to use it to watch videos that you've downloaded yourself and the only videos it will play are ones on these special discs that will cost $12.99 and up. Oh, and it won't play MP3s at all now, either. Read...

Gambling Machines Much Safer Than
Electronic Voting Machines

Gambling Machines Much Safer Than
Electronic Voting Machines
06/14/2004 03:33 AM
It appears that making sure gambling is fair is much more important than making sure our elections are fair. One of the defenses pulled out by those who want to keep going with existing electronic voting machines is that no one seems to complain about electronic gambling machines. Perhaps that's because electronic gambling machines are held to a much higher standard than electronic voting machines. This NY Times editorial lists six different ways in which gambling machines in Nevada are under much more scrutiny than electronic voting machines. These include things like the fact that the state requires copies of the source code of all electronic gambling software, as well as their stringent licensing procedure for any company that wishes to sell electronic gambling machines. Employees of any such company have to go through background checks to make sure they have no criminal record. Considering that Diebold had convict ed felons involved with their electronic voting systems - you wonder if a similar licensing procedure might make sense for voting machines as well.
