The Problem With Monthly Security
Patches

The Problem With Monthly Security
Patches
12/09/2003 09:45 PM
So much for that plan. Back in October, we joked about Microsoft's plans to make their operating system more secure by patching it less often. The convoluted thinking was that if they spent more time on specific monthly (second Tuesday of every month) patches, they could get them right and not always be frantic about coming out with new patches all the time. Of course, there's one fatal flaw in this plan, and that's that security holes (and those who publicize and/or exploit them) don't work on a monthly schedule. So, while it's the second Tuesday of December today, there's no patch from Microsoft. They're making it sound like it's a good thing, but that ignores the few "critical" security updates that came out over the last couple months when "off-schedule" security holes were found.

Trillian Security Problem Surfaces

Trillian Security Problem Surfaces 03/28/2005 04:05 PM

Since I have instant messaging accounts with AOL, MSN, ICQ, and Yahoo, I found it much easier to use a single multi-client program for my instant messaging. For my PC I use Trillian. On my Macs I use Fire.  It didn’t take long for Trillian to become a victim of the dreaded PC buffer overflow which could allow hackers to control users PC’s.  According to beta news..

The vulnerability has existed within several of Trillian's plug-in components since version 2.0, but was mostly eliminated with the release of Trillian 3. However, Trillian 3.1 still contains two overflow bugs in the Yahoo Messenger component, LogicLibrary says. The problem can be used to shut down Trillian or lead to arbitrary code being executed on a vulnerable computer.  Cerulean Studios downplayed the significance of the flaw, saying the risk is extremely low for a real world attack. Nonetheless, the company plans to correct the buffer overflows in its next release of Trillian.

Microsoft Security News 12/02/2003 03:11 AM

Over at Microsoft Monitor I see Microsoft revealed a whole bunch of security data about Microsoft's internal networks today. 2500 to 3000 attempted intrusions per day. And other interesting data. Also, points to a free anti-virus promotion Microsoft has put together with Computer Associates. If you aren't yet running anti-virus software, this is a good way to get it.
