Categorizing with spaces

Categorizing with spaces 03/06/2004 02:05 AM
Jon Udell's been paying a lot of attention recently to categorizing XHTML elements. Two of his readers suggested that he use the class attribute, delimiting the categories (if necessary) with spaces; this is also valid CSS. I'm in favor of it as well, as it has worked well for me in two other circumstances. At del.icio.us/crysflame, I keep a notebook of interesting links. Each link has several pieces of metadata; of interest is the tags field. The content of this field is a space-delimited list of categories, so to speak; a blog post about Google's IPO would be assigned "blog business", while a paper about graphing social dynamics would get "science social math". It's worked out very well for me, so far; I can find things easily enough by selecting individual tags, though more complex slices of the data aren't...

MSN Spaces Supports Feed URI Scheme

MSN Spaces Supports Feed URI Scheme 04/08/2005 03:26 PM

Dare Obasanjo reports that MSN Spaces now supports "one-click subscription" via the feed URI scheme (aka: "feed :// protocol"). According to Mike Torres:

"Clicking on the orange RSS button or the "Syndicate" link above will no longer spit out raw XML to your readers using a modern browser. Instead, they will see a "pretty printed" RSS feed with a link to learn more, subscribe in My MSN, or subscribe in an aggregator supporting one-click subscription (feed://)."

In other words, readers of any of the 4.5 million MSN Spaces blogs can now simply click a feed link to subscribe to the feed in FeedDemon, NetNewsWire, NewsGator, Shrook, RSS Bandit, NewzCrawler, Sharpreader or any other RSS reader which support the feed URI scheme. Very nice!

Wide Open Spaces: Wikis, Ready or Not

Wide Open Spaces: Wikis, Ready or Not 09/09/2004 05:25 AM
Wide Open Spaces: Wikis, Ready or Not by Brian Lamb/strong>
http://www.edu cause.edu/pub/er/erm04/erm0452.asp

In 1999, the World Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee looked back on the previous decade and lamented: “I wanted the Web to be what I call an interactive space where everybody can edit. And I started saying ‘interactive,’ and then I read in the media that the Web was great because it was ‘interactive,’ meaning you could click. This was not what I meant by interactivity.” That vision of a genuinely interactive environment rather than “a glorified television channel”—one in which people not only would browse pages but also would edit them as part of the process—did not disappear with the rise of the read-only Web browser.1 It’s churning away more actively than ever, in a vivid and chaotic Web-within-the-Web, via an anarchic breed of pages known as “wikis.”. This has been added to my Wikis section in Bots, Blogs and News Aggregators web page.

Low Cost OEM Pressure Transducer Offers
Superior Performance in Tight Spaces
03/19/2005 03:12 AM
American Sensor Technologies, Inc. offers a low-cost, high-quality OEM pressure sensor built to address applications with tight space restrictions and requirements for high accuracy, trouble-free operation and long life. Measuring just 0.875 inches in diameter, the AST4100 Pressure Sensor offers superior performance within the tight confines of refrigeration systems, test stands and data loggers. The stainless steel construction of the header and housing makes it ideal for use in the corrosive environments of gas panels as well as within energy/water management applications (pump and tank monitoring). The pressure sensors also serve the automotive industry as integral components of test equipment and aftermarket pressure regulators. [PRWEB Mar 18, 2005]

Breaking Mail

Breaking Mail 06/17/2005 05:03 PM
We (Creative Commons) just upgraded to Apple's Tiger to get the benefit of some cool new iCal features. I'm regretting the decision already. I had moved to Mail.app a while ago, after being frustrated with Entourage's bloat. And after some tinkering, I had crafted a series of hotkeys to automatically move mail from the inbox to different folders. I have always been astonished that this function wasn't integrated into mail applications -- do you all really drag and drop the hundred of emails you file, or do you just not file email? Anyway, though Apple proudly lists all the improvements to Mail as an inducement to upgrade, it doesn't list the things it broke -- in particular, scripting. No longer can you script within Mail. And while you can script at the system level, hot-key support for those scripts doesn't work right now. This is a bug, no doubt. I imagine they'll fix it. But meanwhile, they've also changed the naming convention for such scripts (used to be ctrl, now ctl, etc., or something like that). All of which makes me wonder: who is it that thinks changes like this are improvements? How could you ever imagine that there's more good than harm done by a change like this? Just part of an endless conspiracy to disable the ability to automate life in macland. Why work to automate when some genius will change a convention to force you to recode every time you "up"grade a system? Update: I thought I had posted this update last week. Sorry for the delay. Just about an hour after I posted this, a modest coder sent along his work which solves the problem. Check out Red-Sweater's Fastscripts. See also this free plug-in.

HP: Breaking up is hard to do

HP: Breaking up is hard to do 03/31/2005 12:35 PM
Mark Hurd, who will take over the reins at floundering tech giant Hewlett-Packard on Friday, was grilled by analysts Wednesday about whether he plans drastic restructuring of the company.

Hurd, formerly the chief executive officer of NCR (Research), was named CEO on Tuesday. During an introductory conference call with the financial community Wednesday morning, Hurd stressed that his primary goal is to repair the problems at HP (Research), and not necessarily break up the company. "You talk about problems but there are a bunch of opportunities at the same time," Hurd said in response to one question about strategy. "I want to get underneath every piece of the business and will be focused on doing my best to optimize each part."
