07/28/2004 01:04 AMWhen Makinde Adeagbo and 21 other undergraduate college students
arrived here in June for a five-week computer-science training program
on Microsoft's corporate campus, they were excited about the
opportunity to get an inside look at life at Microsoft. Among the
surprises: how much input everyone has in defining the products they
work on; how much pride everyone takes in their job; and, of course,
the free beverages Microsoft provides to employees.

04/03/2005 05:43 AMAP - College junior Kyle Taylor is downloading hundreds of songs by No
Doubt, Bruce Springsteen and others onto the Compaq laptop in his
cramped dormitory room. With a few more clicks of his mouse, Taylor is
watching commercial-free "Seinfeld" episodes on his computer. In just
minutes, he then downloads the entire movie "A League of Their Own."
The 20-year-old is not breaking any laws. Nor is he at risk of
expensive lawsuits by the entertainment industry over copyright
violations.

Microsoft Making Encarta Into Wikicarta?
Not Quite
04/18/2005 06:48 PMMicrosoft's Encarta encyclopedia project often seems to be forgotten
in all of the various arguments over Wikipedia, but it appears that
they're feeling a bit of the Wikipedia-induced heat. They're going to
now make it easier for
people to suggest changes to Encarta
entries, if they feel they're wrong. Of course, those changes
will still be reviewed by an editor, so it's not really wiki-like at
all -- but that won't stop the press from making the connection. It's
just that Encarta is making the "feedback" functionality a little more
prominent and hoping that this allows them to catch some of the
Wikipedia hype wave.

Microsoft Details More Longhorn Features
Microsoft Details More Longhorn Features
04/15/2005 03:16 PMAs Microsoft approaches a major milestone in the development of
Longhorn, company executives are talking more about the features of
the Windows XP successor, which they say will be easier to use, more
secure, and less costly to manage than earlier versions of Windows.
Microsoft unveiled the Longhorn operating system in late 2003 at a
conference for developers but then reigned in its ambitions for the
operating system last year, aiming to make possible a release in late
2006.
To meet that shipment date, Microsoft clipped some of Longhorn's key
features, most notably the unified storage system called WinFS that
Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates had called the
"Holy Grail." Now, after several months of relative silence
on the Longhorn front, Microsoft executives have once again started to
talk up the operating system's features.

Microsoft Details Features of 'R2'
05/28/2004 03:14 AM?Microsoft used its TechEd conference to lay out some of the features
planned for the next version of Windows Server 2003, code-named ?R2.?
Scheduled for release sometime next year, R2 is a new version of the
server that rolls in some of the feature packs that Microsoft released
for Windows Server 2003. Microsoft has acknowledged that finding and
loading feature packs, such as the heavily touted Windows SharePoint
Services, has been confusing and annoying for customers. At the same
time, the interim release of the server eases the pressure on
Microsoft, which doesn?t plan to ship its ?Longhorn? generation of
Windows server until 2007.?
