Sponsors, speakers, panels, audience

Sponsors, speakers, panels, audience 05/07/2004 01:39 PM

Supernova and the recently announced Web 2.0 conference are throwbacks to the priorities of old conferences, of the eighties and nineties: sponsors, speakers, panels, audience.

Execs from high tech companies pay sponsorship fees, not disclosed, and guarantee that the content is paid advertising and that nothing real is said on stage. If you don't pay the sponsorship fee, you don't get a speaking slot. If you offend a sponsor, you don't get invited back.

These conferences are all spin, and empty bluster.

A picture named shirky.jpgThe organization of the conferences, with speakers and panels, guarantees that the audience falls asleep or is frustrated, waiting to make their point until they get to ask questions at the end of the session. Questions. What a silly concept. Look in the room. It's pretty likely the people who know the most are in the "audience."

By the end of the day people are in the hallway or outside, talking to each other, and when that gets boring, talking on cell phones.

Now that they have WiFi, at least there's an outlet for the audience's ideas, their blogs.

But as we learned at BloggerCon II, it's totally possible to do a conference without sponsors, without speakers, panels, without an audience. In this model, the rooms are full to capacity and even though there's WiFi, there was hardly any time to post to blogs. You can steal the design for this conference. And if you do, sign me up, I want to be there.

If you really want to get the most out of people's time, switch models. You don't need the money from the sponsors, and you don't need speakers, and you surely don't need an audience.

When the Audience is the Producer: The Art of the Collaborative Weblog (): A research paper from University of Texas at Austin: Collaborative group weblogs, which rely on the participation of tens of thousands of members for their content, are often cited as a format of journalism that is new and untapped. In the English language, the most popular and respected practitioners of this format are MetaFilter, Plastic, Kuro5hin, and Slashdot. This paper analyzes these four weblogs to determine how each balances audience fhriedoms and administrative control in their efforts to increase participation and interactivity without chaos. The Death Of Captive Audience
Advertising

The Death Of Captive Audience
Advertising
08/02/2004 04:42 AM
It's amazing how slowly it takes folks like advertising execs to catch on sometimes. For the past five years, plenty of people have realized that there was so much content out there that people were learning to only deal with content they wanted. What that means is that dumb ads that no one cares about don't work at all. Advertising needs to be content that people want to see or interact with. It's not about forcing people to see your ads any more, but about making people want to see your ads. Of course, if you don't realize this, then the rise of the internet, video games, and DVRs seems scary, because it takes away from the way things have been done in the past. However, the folks who do realize this, know that this isn't scary at all, but a huge opportunity to create better content that has a higher likelihood of actually having an impact on the target audience.

According to weblog service Technorati , the number of active blogs continues to increase . Technorati is reportedly:

...tracking over 7.8 million weblogs, and 937 million links. That's just about double the number of weblogs tracked in October 2004. In fact, the blogosphere is doubling in size about once every 5 months. It has already done so at this pace four times, which means that in the last 20 months, the blogosphere has increased in size by over 16 times.
Meanwhile, the readership of blogs is also growing , according to a CNN/Gallup poll .

Audience-measurement bugs track
watermarks in soundtracks

Audience-measurement bugs track
watermarks in soundtracks
04/12/2005 03:56 AM
Cory Doctorow: Ed Felten blogs about a new audience measurement technique. Instead of using viewing journals (which only report on what people think they should be watching) or set-top boxes (which only report on what people leave their sets tuned to), the new technology pays sample listeners to wear an audio-bug. The bug is sensitive to audio watermarks in the soundtracks of programs that are around you, so that it actually logs what you listen to, not what you report or what you leave your set tuned to. Ed points out some likely consequences of this more accurate metric:
...[B]y measuring what people actually hear, the technologies will strengthen advertisers' incentives to deliver ads in ways that defeat the standard measures we use to skip or avoid them. No longer will advertisers measure attempts to deliver audio ads; now they'll measure success in delivering sound waves to our ears. So we'll hear more and more audio ads in captive-audience situations like elevators, taxicabs, and doctors' waiting rooms. Won't that be nice?

Yet Another Company Targeting PCs At

Yet Another Company Targeting PCs At
Teens
08/17/2004 05:02 PM
This is certainly not the first time a company has tried this (though, the article suggests otherwise), but a new computer is about to hit the market which is specifically targeted at teenagers -- both at the hardware and software level. The accessories and case are designed to be stylish, the hard drive is designed to hold a lot of music, and the software is designed to appeal to busy multi-tasking kids. It also has close integration with a mobile phone (if you happen to be a Sprint customer) and an MP3 player/digital storage keychain device. It looks like the company has at least done a bit more work than past attempts to try to create a more complete package, and they did obviously use a lot of teens in helping to design the system. However, marketing to teens is notoriously difficult -- and the fact that they're signing up teens as commission-based sales people may not go over too well with some. Besides, if the computer comes off as being even the slightest bit uncool (or targeted at kids too young or likely to become obsolete too quickly, etc.) the whole idea could die a quick death. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of the finished product (due out this fall), but the fact that it's a desktop machine may be problematic as well. These days, kids tend to identify themselves with their mobile phones, and the freedom that presents, and may be less interested in some desktop stuck back in their room and coated in fuzzy pink fur. Even if kids to prefer to stay in their room at home, having something that's portable is where the real bragging power comes in.
