FCC's Powell Talks Common Sense, but Where's Policy?
FCC's Powell Talks Common Sense, but Where's Policy?07/14/2004 03:30 PM Michael Powell,
chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, talked a great game
last night at the Al
ways On conference at Stanford. He spoke out for an open
architecture on the Net; indicated that the broadcast "indecency"
rules are at best questionable from a Constitutional and logical
framework, and generally impressed a crowd of technologists and tech
constituents.
I'll be happier when his views translate more firmly into FCC
policies, and when Congress discovers that the distinction between
media are growing far too hazy for the old rules. But this is genuine
progress.
There's lots of blogging going on here. My older, wiser brother
Steve is part of the ZDNet team that's posting here.
Oh, here's Powell's al
leged blog, which has been drawing attention. I say "alleged"
because while I think it's great that he's posting and listening --
two of the major components of blogging -- this neither looks nor
feels like the real thing. Still, it's interesting, and the comments
he's drawn from all kinds of folks are terrific.

Money 2005: Microsoft Unveils Simplified Approach to Financial Management and Helps People Make Sense of Their Money09/21/2004 08:41 AM Marking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since
the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft
Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium,
Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify
daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing
number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the
three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances,
monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time
than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to
the number of American households banking online -- due to its
convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money
2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts
in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate
the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.
Making Microsoft a niche player
Making Microsoft a niche player08/30/2004 06:46 AM Novell engineer and manager Allison Singh recently predicted in an
Africa-based tectonic magazine article that Windows will become a
niche operating system, replaced by Linux as the new standard. A
gestalt of recent trends, events, and stories should tell you that
this prediction is right on the money. A gestalt, by the way, is a
perception or conclusion that goes beyond the sum of its parts. Here
are three of the many parts that comprise the gestalt.
We all know that there are many, many version of Windows being used
around the world that are not legit. But the worst thing you could do
is refuse to update security holes or fixes because they are not
legit. That’s what Microsoft tends to do later this year. All I
can say is that anyone using a pirated Windows version needs to have
the same security updates as everyone else or we will all suffer from
more trojans, viruses, DOS attacks and slow downs on the internet.

Microsoft Making Encarta Into Wikicarta? Not Quite
Microsoft Making Encarta Into Wikicarta? Not Quite04/18/2005 06:48 PM Microsoft's Encarta encyclopedia project often seems to be forgotten
in all of the various arguments over Wikipedia, but it appears that
they're feeling a bit of the Wikipedia-induced heat. They're going to
now make it easier for people to suggest changes to Encarta
entries, if they feel they're wrong. Of course, those changes
will still be reviewed by an editor, so it's not really wiki-like at
all -- but that won't stop the press from making the connection. It's
just that Encarta is making the "feedback" functionality a little more
prominent and hoping that this allows them to catch some of the
Wikipedia hype wave.
Microsoft Wants to Resume Talks With EU
Microsoft Wants to Resume Talks With EU12/19/2004 03:11 PM Software giant Microsoft Corp. hopes an impending court ruling on its
five-year antitrust battle with the European Union will bring both
sides back to the negotiating table, but EU regulators still balk at
resuming direct negotiations, officials said Thursday. The European
Court of First Instance is expected to decide by Monday whether to
stay pending appeal the EU's March order for Microsoft to change its
business practices and pay a 497 million euro ($666 million) fine,
lawyers said.
Considering that the full appeal could take years, the consequences of
a suspension could be huge. If court President Bo Vesterdorf backs the
EU, the U.S.-based software giant would be forced to divulge some of
its long-cherished trade secrets to competitors and untie the digital
Media Player from its Windows platform. Microsoft will be carefully
assessing the legal arguments Vesterdorf gives.
