High Tech Patient Care

High Tech Patient Care 06/08/2004 10:47 AM

USATODAY.com - In the hospital of the future, patients are pampered guests: This article on a new, high-tech hospital in Denver has some interesting notes.

Computerized patient records help prevent deadly medication errors. Embedded nanotechnology chips track everything from drugs to newborn infants. If an infant is carried outside of a secured area, alarms sound, and the hospital immediately is locked down to prevent a kidnapping.

Computers also are used to limit the time people spend in the waiting areas, which have stunning views of the snow-capped Rocky Mountains. A confirmation of the appointment is e-mailed to the patient the day before an exam or procedure. A patient who prints out the reminder can run a bar code on the page under a laser scanner near the hospital's front door to check in. The staff sees this on a computer screen and prepares to greet the patient heading toward the waiting area.

By evening, the patient gets an e-mail from Brimhall asking how the visit went and whether the patient had to wait. Each case in which there was a delay is sent back to the department, which must explain the delay to Brimhall. He reports back to the patient.

Nearly 100,000 people die in U.S. hospitals each year due to diagnostic errors, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. After his friend's 21-year-old son died in an emergency room as a result of a misdiagnosis, Michigan pharmacologist Dr. Joel C. Robertson resolved to create a technology product that might prevent similar tragedies by helping doctors to more quickly and accurately assess a patient's condition.

Improving our mirrors. Can you help?

Improving our mirrors. Can you help? 08/03/2004 10:37 AM
Finks decision to gradually build its own network of mirrors has payed off. To make sure that we can continue to offer a high quality service we need to improve our mirror network. It has been some time since we last asked for more mirrors. It is time to do so again. Fink is very grateful for the resources granted to us by our community. To further improve our service to the community we require an even better mirror system. We especially lack mirrors in central Europe, Russia and the Far East. If you feel that you have at least two Mbit to spare for a rsync mirror or more to offer a distfiles mirror please contact us. To get a better understanding of the different types of mirrors Fink offers, please go and review finkmirrors.net. This is the official homepage for all mirror related issues. If you feel that you can offer other types of resources, web-space for testing as an example, please do not hestitate in contacting us as well.

Improving online credibility

Improving online credibility 07/29/2004 12:59 AM

If you've browsed Amazon's product reviews recently you may have noticed an interesting new feature: Badges< /a>, little icons displayed below certain people's names. This isn't a new idea by any means - many online communities use special icons as rewards for members who make valuable contributions (SitePoint is a good example). What's interesting about Amazon's badges is that one of them is "Real Name". Amazon's Real Names FAQ explains the badge, and includes the following:

Why is Amazon.com encouraging the use of Real Names?

In general, we believe that a community in which people use their Real Names will ultimately have higher quality content, since an author willing to sign his or her real-world name on a piece of content is essentially saying "With my real-world identity, I stand by what I have written here."

Real names certainly add credibility to online discussion: I for one find it much easier to trust information if the author appears to have signed their real name to it. The challenge is verifying that the name is accurate, and Amazon's solution is so simple-but-smart that I kicked myself: they match the name against the user's credit card details. Genius.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this trick taking on a key role in the field of online identity management - provided Amazon's patent lawyers don't get there first.

Improving Google Images

Improving Google Images 06/17/2002 02:01 PM
Google Images is an ambitious project from Google and of course it's nowhere near as good as the original Google Web. But much to Google's credit, it's continuously getting better. However, I think I have a few suggestions to make it better:Use Google Web - Google Web is incredible, it will very often bring back the right match as the first hit. Take advantage of this -- display images on that page.Search ALT tags - Although they're not used everywhere, ALT tags are a big source of useful information about pictures. Also, if Google Images uses them, it will encourage more authors to put better info in them, which helps Web Accessibility. The first or only image is often right - On many web pages there's only one image (like my own) or the first image is right (like Guido van Rossum's) or it's the first non-space image (like Land Rover's). Return these as results!Google Web is an incredible thing and it doesn't make sense Google Images not to take advantage of it. Right now using Google Web and then picking an image off the page is often better than Google Images. I hope that changes in the near future. Example searches that can be improved:W3C - on Google Web's first result, the W3C logo is the top image, the biggest image, the only image with "W3C" in the alt text and the only image with W3C in the filename)Scripting News - on Google Web's first result, the Scripting News logo is the largest image (and the first non-spacer) and has an ALT tag of "ScriptingNews").Do you have suggestions? Mail them in!
