Macs bring Lord of the Rings, other DVDs

09/20/2004 08:41 AMGiven their complexity and breadth of scope, typical Special Edition
DVD releases often begin production well before their movie
counterparts are complete. The head start gives DVD producers time to
shoot and assemble bonus materials so that the disc is ready for store
shelves several months after the movie opens in theaters. It shouldn't
be a surprise, then, that DVD producer Robert Myer Burnett, a
self-described "Mac boy all the way" since 1984, has been visiting the
set of Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in
New Zealand despite the fact that the film will be released in
December 2005.

06/17/2005 04:37 PMYahoo has begun testing a new Web search designed to scour
password-protected subscription sites normally inaccessible to Web

measly search capabilities compared to giants like Yahoo.

Archos to make personal video players
that can copy from DVDs
12/02/2003 01:23 AM
One of the biggest problems with personal video players is that there
isn't a whole lot of legal content to watch on them. Because it's
illegal to copy a DVD to a computer, and most people won't want one of
these things just to watch home videos, the most likely source of
content for these things right now is P2P file-sharing networks like
Kazaa, where it's not too hard to find MPEGs of The Sopranos and The
Simpsons. To get around all that, manufacturer Archos is going to
start putting special chips from Texas Instruments into their personal
video players that supposedly make it possible to copy movies from
DVDs and watch them on the player. Read...

Amazon Lets You View DVDs Online
Amazon Lets You View DVDs Online
06/17/2004 08:53 PM
It's still surprising that Amazon.com seems so much farther ahead of
the game than just about any other online retailer in terms of overall
features and user experience. They continue to do more to give
potential buyers more information about the products they offer. The
ability to listen to snippets of songs from CDs that are being sold is
well known. More recently, they introduced the ability to search
through entire books and view the pages online. Now, they're
experimenting with a similar offering for DVDs. They're going to let
people watch a full scene from a soon-to-be-released DVD. This is
similar to promotions that have been done a few times to let
people watch the first five to ten minutes of a movie online to
try to get them hooked. As more people get broadband connections, it
wouldn't be surprising if DVD sellers (Netflix, anyone?) started to
offer such functionality as well.
