Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail 05/26/2004 01:35 PM
Last month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by a California politician to create a law that would ban Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to explain how email works, and have convinced her to tone down the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the content of your emails to put in advertising.

Policies that kill?

Policies that kill? 12/02/2003 01:10 AM
Starting with this year's State of the Union address, President Bush began a plan to increase aid to Africa, and at the center of that plan is funding to prevent the spread of AIDS and HIV that has reached epidemic proportions on the continent. Critics however, have noted that aid to clinics comes with strings attached. Abstinence is preached first and foremost and condoms are mentioned only as a last resort. This reporter flat out says the policy to curtail the funding and use of condoms in Africa is killing millions.

Policies vs. Politics

Policies vs. Politics 12/19/2004 03:12 PM

Virginia Postrel hits on something interesting in a New York Times article based on a paper by a group of Harvard economists. The paper is about religion in politics, but she draws two broader conclusions:

Yet abortion rates show no significant change with the party in office, while tax rates rise significantly under Democrats - the opposite of what the political rhetoric promises. This result suggests that politicians move away from the social center mostly to get votes ("strategic extremism") and diverge from the economic center because they actually prefer those policies ("nonstrategic extremism").

Since the success of extreme messages depends on keeping your supporters better informed than your opponents, the model suggests that changing news media could be as important as changing social groupings.

Sounds right to me. The second point is intriguing because it suggests that getting the "liberal media" out of its elite, coastal shell might actually hurt the cultural conservatives who complain about it.

IMF Policies Admitted Wrong 03/19/2003 10:28 PM
Oops! IMF Admits Failed Policies
International financial integration should also help countries to reduce economic volatility, the study said, but in reality this has not happened.

"Indeed, the process of capital account liberalization appears to have been accompanied in some cases by increased vulnerability to crises," the report said.

"Globalization has heightened these risks since cross-country financial linkages amplify the effects of various shocks and transmit them more quickly across national borders."

In the last 10 years, developing countries from Thailand and Russia to Argentina, have seen their economies collapse, even though many of them were trying to follow IMF-prescribed open market policies.

So does this mean corporate facism harms the world's poor?

Gmail Imports Contacts 07/07/2004 06:17 PM
“The Gmail team recently released an Import Contacts feature that enables users to quickly transfer contact information to Gmail from an existing mail service whether it’s MSFT Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Orkut, and others. First, a user must save their existing contact information as a CSV file in a place on their hard drive where they can easily find it. By clicking through to the Contacts > Import Contacts links at the top right of the Gmail interface, users are then given the option to import/upload their contacts CSV file into Gmail. And voila! When contacts are imported, Gmail automatically fills-in addresses as a user types recipient names into the address field. That’s it for now, please try Import Contacts for yourself and let me know if you have any questions or need more information.”

The only real surprise here is that it took Yahoo! this long to figure out they need to increase the amount of storage they offered their webmail users following Google's 1 gig Gmail announcement over a month ago. They're now offering 100 megs for free, and paid users get "virtually unlimited storage" - but no details are given on just how "virtual" those non-limits are. The link is to a page that says: Since we launched Gmail in April 2004, we've been focused on improving the service, relying on our users to spread the word and invite others to try it out. The response has been great, and now we're ready for some more Gmail users. [...] As we make room for more Gmail users, we want to first extend invitations to Google users. We're still working to make Gmail better, so for now, we're just inviting a small number at random. Looks like that's you! We're really excited to share Gmail with you and we hope you like it....

EFF on Gmail

EFF on Gmail 04/10/2004 03:46 AM
On EFF's Deep Links blog, some preliminary analysis of Google's Gmail terms-of-service:
"People are entitled to know what kind of information Google will pull from email, whether or not it logs this information, and for how long," said EFF's Kevin Bankston. "Can your Gmail address or any other personal identifier be linked to those logs, or to your Google search history?"

"Gmail's privacy policy states that 'Google welcomes feedback on this document and policy as the Gmail service is currently in an early testing stage.' While that's a nice sentiment, we can't give meaningful feedback until we have all the facts."

The remedy to the situation is obvious: Google needs to let us all know precisely what the privacy/convenience trade-off is for using Gmail, and soon.

Is there any way to specify your default email app as a website in a Windows XP system? Currently, my office workstation has an ancient copy of Eudora I haven't used in years, but whenever I need to email someone from my PC (I do all my email on a powerbook), I have to copy/paste addresses by hand and use my mac or use Gmail.

It seems like there should be a way to tell firefox my default email app isn't an app, but is instead gmail.google.com. Anyone that knows of a way can have an invite to gmail. Or anyone that just wants an invite can also email me and we can have this problem together. Just ping me and I'll invite you in.
