Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
05/26/2004 01:35 PMLast month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by
a California politician to create a law that would
ban
Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely
optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including
those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to
explain how email works, and have convinced her to
tone down
the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the
anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In
other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how
pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face
by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a
bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the
content of your emails to put in advertising.

the policy to curtail the funding and use of condoms in

Policies vs. Politics
Policies vs. Politics
12/19/2004 03:12 PMVirginia Postrel hits on something interesting in a New York Times article based on a paper by a group of Harvard economists. The
paper is about religion in politics, but she draws two broader
conclusions:
Yet abortion rates show no significant change with the
party in office, while tax rates rise significantly under Democrats -
the opposite of what the political rhetoric promises. This result
suggests that politicians move away from the social center mostly to
get votes ("strategic extremism") and diverge from the economic center
because they actually prefer those policies ("nonstrategic
extremism").
Since the success of extreme messages depends on keeping your
supporters better informed than your opponents, the model suggests
that changing news media could be as important as changing social
groupings.
Sounds right to me. The second point is intriguing because it
suggests that getting the "liberal media" out of its elite, coastal
shell might actually hurt the cultural conservatives who complain
about it.

International financial integration should also help countries to
reduce economic volatility, the study said, but in reality this has
not happened.
"Indeed, the process of capital account liberalization appears to
have been accompanied in some cases by increased vulnerability to
crises," the report said.
"Globalization has heightened these risks since cross-country
financial linkages amplify the effects of various shocks and transmit
them more quickly across national borders."
In the last 10 years, developing countries from Thailand and Russia to
Argentina, have seen their economies collapse, even though many of
them were trying to follow IMF-prescribed open market
policies.

from an existing mail service whether it’s MSFT Outlook, Yahoo

they can easily find it. By clicking through to the Contacts > Import
Contacts links at the top right of the Gmail interface, users are then
given the option to import/upload their contacts CSV file into Gmail.
And voila! When contacts are imported, Gmail automatically fills-in
addresses as a user types recipient names into the address field.
That’s it for now, please try Import Contacts for yourself and

EFF on Gmail
EFF on Gmail
04/10/2004 03:46 AMOn EFF's Deep Links blog, some preliminary analysis of Google's Gmail
terms-of-service:
"People are entitled to know what kind of information Google will pull
from email, whether or not it logs this information, and for how
long," said EFF's Kevin Bankston. "Can your Gmail address or any other
personal identifier be linked to those logs, or to your Google search
history?"
"Gmail's privacy policy states that 'Google welcomes feedback on this
document and policy as the Gmail service is currently in an early
testing stage.' While that's a nice sentiment, we can't give
meaningful feedback until we have all the facts."
The remedy to the situation is obvious: Google needs to let us all
know precisely what the privacy/convenience trade-off is for using
Gmail, and soon.
