Having a Backup Career Plan

Having a Backup Career Plan

Having a Backup Career Plan 07/06/2004 11:52 PM

It's odd. I don't know if it's the field of work I'm in or not, but a high percentage of folks that I know reasonably well all seem to have what I call a "backup career plan" in mind. Some of them are actively working on their plan--going back to school part or full-time, getting additional training, etc. Others haven't made any concrete moves yet but seem to talk about it more and more. There's this [usually] unspoken sense that...

Where's The Backup Plan For Stopping
Spam?

Where's The Backup Plan For Stopping
Spam?
01/17/2004 10:47 PM
Normally, if you're trying to solve a difficult problem, you have a few different plans. If something doesn't work, you need to be ready to move onto plan B. I've been asking since the CAN SPAM bill was passed, how is the government planning to measure how successful (or not) it's been - and what's plan B? Now that it's becoming increasingly clear that CAN SPAM hasn't been even remotely successful - and has basically done nothing to slow down the rise of spam, I want to know again, what is the government's plan B? They were so proud of themselves for passing CAN SPAM, yet they included no money for enforcement, no way to measure how successful it was, and no plan B. In other words, yet another law that makes for a good press release, and a good sound bite at election time, but does nothing to solve a problem.

Both drives do a fine job of simplifying backup and providing external storage space. The ABSplus is a focused backup device that's easy to use, right out of the box, for backup and restoration, whereas Maxtor's cheaper and quieter drive is better for people who want extra disk space and more backup flexibility. Are you considering a career in Advertising, or perhaps you have just been offered your first Agency job? Perhaps you have been in advertising for a few months and are starting to grow jaded with this industry. Who ever you are, I would like to present this negative impression of life in the Ad business. My life working for an ad-agency was not all bad - in fact there were some quite amusing moments. However as a choice of career, I would not recommend this sector.

Webl0gging about your job and career

Webl0gging about your job and career 06/22/2004 01:12 AM

I do not talk about my regular job on this or my private website as I know my employer would not be real happy about it. But I have been thinking about writing on a particular facet of my Job that my employer probably would not have any issue with. I have had a domain for a couple of years that fits perfectly with the subject I would like to write about. Their are a few other sites out their that attempt to draw the same audience that I would like and I know that I could affect their traffic in a negative way. I have been working on a set of self imposed censorship rules after all the last thing I want to do is write about something that could cause my employer embarrassment.

Some have been fired from their jobs and I personally like mine enough that I would censor myself to protect my job. This may seem crazy to some people but I am not stupid. As I like my job and I like the paycheck. Unfortunately it is a catch 22 I hope that someone someday has the vision to generate a policy document spelling out what is ok and what isnt as I am sure companies like Microsoft have. What car for a young man starting a
career in Los Angeles?

What car for a young man starting a
career in Los Angeles?
03/17/2005 03:24 AM

A young friend is starting a career in Los Angeles.  His goals are the following:

  • fun to drive
  • favorably impress superiors at work
  • appeal to single women
  • spend less than $60,000 and ideally much less

What should he buy?

[Update:  I hadn't wanted to prejudice anyone so I withheld my suggestion... the new Ford Mustang convertible.  He will be in California, where driving on the backroads in a convertible can be a lot of fun.  The fanciest V6 convertible lists for only $25,000.  There is a small back seat for a Golden Retriever.  The solid rear axle isn't an issue considering that California has no potholes.  He doesn't need the big V8 engine because California traffic is generally so heavy that he'll be lucky to hit 30 mph.  To me this is a fun car that doesn't say "I'm trying to impress you with my wealth" (which is always a failure in LA because there is always someone richer in the next lane with a $100,000+ car).  What do folks think of the Mustang idea?  Am I totally out of touch with youth?]

Low tuition encourages career slackers?

Low tuition encourages career slackers? 06/22/2005 02:23 AM

The students whom I met during a brief stop at University of Wisconsin in Madison seemed to have chosen majors that aren't very useful vocationally.  My friends who teach liberal arts at high-tuition schools in the Boston area report that their students are very focussed on getting into a high-paying career with an MBA or a law degree.  Two girls at U. of W. who stopped me to ask about Alex seemed like good examples of what happens when tuition is only around $3000/semester (in-state).  One was majoring in philosophy and headed for a Ph.D. program in philosophy.  The other was in women's studies and headed for graduate school at UCLA in women's studies.

Were these a statistical anomaly or is there a correlation between low tuition and students pursuing the intellectual life?
